So the registered name as show name thread got me thinking...
What ARE the funniest/oddest/most inappropriate REGISTERED names that you have heard of....?

Well...I don't really care for my horse's registered name which is Blazing K Jet. First of all, it sounds like a QH person named her ;) She is a TB. And second, her name shouldn't contain Blazing or Jet  She is hot but hardly fast
And I did know a QH named "Beau's Cousin Bill" He was so cute but definately didn't fit his name.
And another mare I am riding right now has a winner of a name. Ima Real Luker  Poor girl. She is a very cute little mare that we call Luka in the barn. She really needs a more feminine name to show under than her registered name.

CR Foolish Twister - I know nothing about QH showing and only do local hunter stuff, but this name is just plain silly -- although I have to say I know there are much worse QH names than this, so I guess I should count myself lucky!

My large pony was supposedly registered (never saw the papers myself) as "Audacious Playboy." What the heck? That would have been fantastic for his final career as a Short Stirrup pony...
Another one not so Short Stirrup worthy name was a pony mare I used to care for whose registered name was "Glenmure Gay Romance" (she was British and imported). Nothing wrong with gay romances by any means, but I'm not sure too many pony parents would be thrilled with that as a show name (or Heterosexual Romance for that matter)

But maybe it would be a good education for those who have forgotten that "gay" also means "happy"...

We were given a QH when I was a kid who was the pasture buddy for my OTTB and who I rode occasionally on trails and in local shows. He was super cute, 15.2h black gelding with a white star. His barn name was Codie so we showed him as "Cadete." His registered name was JC Big Black Man. Umm, no that is not appropriate.
My OTTB was blessed with a nice name, Easy Style, which I kept b/c it fit him perfectly.
A friend of mine growing up had a pony with a registered name "Bodacious Idea." Odd as it was, it fit her really well and always made me smile.

Mr. Sockdolager ... most people can't pronouce it, and nobody seems to know what it means. One of the definitions is 'something outstanding' which I really like, but I don't use it as a show name as I try to avoid confusion. Current show name is Paint It Black.

Nov. 13, 2008, 03:30 PM
I had an ATA registered gelding who was "Ajiin"
no one knew how to pronounce it, or what it meant. Well, after a little homework on my part I found out. His dam was a TB named Amity, Sire was Martini (by Cocktail). So, I'm guessing they wanted it to start with A & I found out that a jiin is what you shake a Martini in, so I think that was where it came from. I had long since changed the name. His barn name was always Romeo, so show name became "When in Rome"

not that it lessens the strange-ness of it as a registered name....

fleur de duc
Nov. 13, 2008, 04:04 PM
MY TB mare's name was Fleur de Duc . I liked it, and it was fitting for her .. she certainly was royalty. she was known as willow at the barn, or I called her momma.
i also rode a pony who's registered name was :Laughing boy merle:dead:
it was horrible. so unfitting it was not even funny.
and it wasnt my horse (obviously) but there was a horse that ran in the breeders cup this year named "Doramefasolatedo" (SP much?) I would hate that...

My pony is registered Half-Welsh. I kid you not, this is her real name:
Flying Diamond Ushuaia
Try saying that five times fast. There is no way in hell I would show her under that name. I think I might have a few times, and even if we spelled it how it was pronounced, it still got butchered.
Her show name is now Rubies and Pearls, and her barn name is Ruby.

Montanas_Girl
Nov. 13, 2008, 06:27 PM
My gelding's registered name is Montanas Shadow - easy to pronounce and perfectly acceptable. His mother, on the other hand, was named Sesquicula! Ick! I have no idea where that came from.
I got to name my new filly, so her name is Khaliforniadreambeyby. (I wanted Khalifornia Dreamin, but apparently it was already taken.) One more character and it would have been too long.
One of the "best" ones I ever heard belonged to a Paint at a local show. His/her name was "XYZ" Oops My Zippers Down. That's a fun one to hear over the loudspeaker. The same owner showed a horse called Peekin My Zipper.

Oh the QH...
My mare was Bonanzas Lacy Lady...I always thought it was uh...interesting...
At my first PSJ show my dad filled out the paperwork and put that down. I thought it would be too hard to switch during the middle of the year. So we ended up showing under that all year. I never could come up with anything less awful so the entire time I showed her we had the worst name of anyone.

I showed my retired horse under his JC registered name: Island Volcano. It's not terrible. He could explode. And he's chestunut. It fit well enough ;)
My new guy is Betterdo'er. I imagine that's supposed to be something along the lines of "Better do over" but the way it's spelled one could take that apostrophe to mean just about any letter they want :uhoh:. Thankfully, if it's getting announced, one would hear Better Doer and just think we were being arrogant  I don't use it because I don't want to have to live up to that name!! I use Hard To Imagine because it's one of my favorite Pearl Jam songs and it fits him PERFECTLY! He has had a rough life since I've owned him: impaction colic, chronic gas colic, ulcers, put his leg through a wall, abscesses...yeah, it's hard to imagine he is still usuable let alone a super star!
I have a horse in my virtual stable whose name is Da Da Da Dum. It's cute but would sound ominous if said when entering the show ring  I also have one called Tasteslikechicken. Now, she's in my virtual stable because I couldn't resist the name but OMG if I had to show her as that!!!!!

I can only blame my father, who thought it would be great for me to have a TB filly named after me... Rompin' Rachel. I felt horrible for the filly who turned into a sweet mare that had that name.
Then, he named the last filly we foaled out Fuzzaron. Yep. Because she looked like a Fuzzy version of her mother, named My Mom Ron. Fuzzaron still goes by Ron, but her show name is Any Day Now.
SunnysideJate
Nov. 13, 2008, 08:39 PM
My Quarter Horse mare's registered name was Glorified Wardlaw her barn name was Glory and I showed her as Morning Glory. My Standardbred's name is Sunnyside Jate aka Sunny and I will use his registered name this year in the show ring, but we will be doing the STB classes only.

Nov. 13, 2008, 09:36 PM
My old paint horse was registered as "Painted Oro." He was by Conquistador Oro out of a mare named Joe's Painted Lady, so it fit I guess, but I didn't like how it was half Spanish half English (oro means gold). It also sounded too "paint"-ish for my liking on the H/J circuit, so I renamed him Make It So.
My current horse is a track-bred thoroughbred but he never actually raced. His Jockey Club name is Hero's Testimony, which I don't mind so I just use it because I couldn't think of anything I liked better.

I leased a delightful young-at-heart "evergreen" Thoroughbred (as in, competed in the Baby Greens for several years in a row... I am fairly certain now that that was not kosher but I was young and dumb) whose JC name was Gottagetouttahere. Sadly he didn't getouttahere with speed so he gotoutta the barn. We showed him as "In Agottadavida" after the song, and promptly heard a lot of "Renn riding In-a-gotta-dinner" and "I'm sorry, we have no information on this rider."
My beloved Fuzzy Horse was... drumroll please... Intrepid John. That's not too bad and I might have just shown him as Intrepid, had it not been a complete lie. Showed him as Renaissance (I don't know, it just fit) and H.I.H. Black Knight.

DH's TB bay hunter came with the JC name "Battlehound". Nope, sorry, I don't think so. This horse is a total pocket pony whose main ambition in life is to be a lap dog. His barn name = his show name = Kahlua.
And DD has an elegant Appendix mare, nearly half TB (7/16), who came with a SCREAMINGLY QH registered name. Changed that one, too.
My Little Pony, of course, is a back yard breeder mutt. And the Old Geezer's papers were lost long, long ago and the tattoo is illegible. So they're both OK with whatever we want to call them.

Swish's was Duncan which I just said an outright NO to. I mean, I like Duncan. Dunkin Doughnuts, that is, with a decaf coffee. His last barn name was Dewey, and at the time, there was also a Hewey and a Louie in his last barn. So we did some major revamping with names... Frankly though if you whistled loud enough he'd come no matter what you called him.
My happy go lucky mare I'm leasing, I can't even remember her registered QH name. Something out there that doesn't make sense unless you look at the pedigree, but otherwise Im fine just calling her Rufus. :-)
My last barn we had some weird papered names--we went through a cornocopia of fruit names!

It's a blackjack reference (the card game). Meaning, deal me another card. But yes, it could be interpreted in quite a variety of ways...

Most of the good names are already taken (many times over for that matter)... I guess that is why we have a "Hunan Princess" and a "Phyl's Slew" ;)
We do have a Secretariat grand baby and we used her racing name (although she never made it to the track) as her show name. Psalterium (kinda like sall-tear-ium) For some reason it just fit her.

I do show under my horses registered names...much to the chagrin of many a horse show announcer. They try but those foreign names can be tough. It's a big help when selling since their registered names reflect their breeding and people can make the connections when seeing them show.
I don't even change their barn names anymore and use their registered names as their barn names...or a shortened derivative if it's super long, they all usually end up getting a ridiculous nickname and usually a theme song, too once I get to know them anyway . I've had too much bad luck after changing horses names (I used to have a theme for my horses and would change their names so they fit it) and can't bring myself to do it anymore. Since most of them come with foreign barn names as well as registered names I figure I may as well just use the registered name to cut down on confusion.
The last one we changed was a pony with the show name 'curb appeal'. My dad made me change it b/c, even though it referred to the realty term, it apparently made him think of prostitutes and he didn't want his 11 year old riding a pony with that connotation

When I was a young girl, my parents purchased for me a 4-year-old green broke STALLION (who actually turned out to be the sweetest guy and a wonderful large pony hunter) whose quarter horse name was: King HoHo. We thought that was pretty awful, and he was a beautiful buckskin, so we showed him as King Midas. I sold him a few years later, and I yeard that his name had been changed again to Al Capony, though I don't know that to be a fact.
I then purchased an OTTB mare whose JC name was: Chim Chimere. Whenever I would hear it, I felt the need to burst into Mary Poppins songs, because of the Chim Chimeny song.
I had another TB whose JC name was Ty's Best Man, which I thought was a little too quarter horsey sounding. His barn name was Buster, so I called him Filibuster, as he could be a little testy and would try to talk me out of what I wanted for a very, very long time.
Rode a Trak. stallion named Cestus...but the name fit him to a "t" so that's what it remained.
Finally, I had an OTTB whose JC name was "Soes Ahead." Sadly, in his first race he finished 35 lengths behind, and never did much better than that. We called him Riley, and as a show name I called him A2/C Riley (Airman 2nd Class Riley) since my dad loaned me the money to purchase him, and that had been my dad's lowly rank in the airforce when he was 18.

All of my horses that were registered didn't have aweful names:
Truckin Twenty
Tidal Prince (OTTB)
Handley Barns Herve
Oriano
Hot Wheels EHJ
I only changed one of the names from the horses listed above, and only because "Oriano" seemed way to masculine for such a pretty lady!

My poor TB gelding was Eric the Red at the barn, Galileo in the show ring, and FLIM FLAM TAX MAN on the track.
Flim Flam Tax Man? Really? Seriously? Who in the world thinks that's a good name?!
The only good JC name i ever heard was Devil's Broommaker.

I had an event mare (TB) years ago. Her registered name was "Free Falling" I guess after the song, but I did not think it was appropriate for an event mare!!!--She was a daughter of Spy Song so I renamed her Gypsy Spy because she came to me from the track in an old single in line trailer--talk about a gypsy caravan!!

Hmm, i'm lucky because I bought most of my horses young, so I got to choose their names. But my first hunter horse was named Fourth Key and her barn name was Tova. When I sold her they changed it to Hallelujah. I'm not sure which one is better...
My medium pony (Rainsprite) came with the barn name Mr. Magoo. We were never sure why, since his vision was perfectly fine...and it was a rediculously long barn name for a pony named RAINSPRITE, haha. We quickly changed that one to Spritey.
I used to show a large pony named Costume Change (he was a paint) and I always loved that name.

A friend at an OTTB named Fumbling George.
Seems they couldn't think of a name and let the Jockey Club name him.
Big mistake.
We once had a mare that had been named Golden Showers,
but the Jockey Club figured out what that really was
so had them change the name to Suspenseiskillingme

Sorry just have to correct it here: I believe you meant to write "dam." It has an entirely different meaning with the "n." ;)

I had an appaloosa cross from france named Shamou Du Quesnay showing in the jumpers. We kept his name but it always caused troubble for the announcers.
After having had dinner and drinks friday night with both the announcer and head judge at a big show in Europe he was announced simply by his barn name "Spot" for the rest of the weekend. Too funny!

None of mine are TOO bad, so it wouldn't kill me to show them with their registered names, but I wouldn't unless forced to.
My only concern is that so many registered names give away the breed—no more passing off your QH as a warmblood!

For me, not such a problem.
My last show horse was reg. "Viking Grog." I called him Erik around the barn, but had no problems with his registered name. The one before that was reg. "Thunderblazer," and since he was huge, and the ground almost literally shook when he galloped, it kinda fit.
Newbie is "Confetti's Magic Marker." He wasn't registered when I bought him, so I had the option of naming him whatever I wanted, but I thought the name was cute, so that's how I registered him, though, because of registry requirements, in one registry he is Confettis MagicMarker, and in the other (only 20 letters allowed) he's ConfettisMagicMarker. Kinda silly, but I can separate the words on entry blanks, so who cares. Mark around the barn.

I saw a APHA stallion in some breeder's magazine named
High Gloss Ink Jet.
I can just see it.. the breeder can't think up a name until he glances over at his printer. Voila!
My gelding's name was Honest Effort, which I now think is adorable and fitting, but at the time I hated it so I changed it to Third Times the Charm, which fits his story. :D
Lizzie's registered name is Lizbet, changed to Pardon My French. Perfect for the unpredictable Selle Francais mare with some SERIOUS launching capabilities.

The one that I have now, would be "Dreammaker" and would have to be darn good to live up to that name. I did keep one Jockey Club name for a A/A hunter years ago; Thursday's Hero, which I thought was pretty neat....

A mare I bought for my lesson program is an Appendix. Her name is "Showdown's Quick Money" and by god, it couldn't be further from the truth. Talk about L.A.Z.Y. One of my kids asked if she had ever done barrells...HA. We changed her name to "Trick or Treat" (which suits her temperment much better!)
Her mother, if you can belive it, was DOLLAR TURKEY. Seriously? Oh yeah, and that's the TB side....
