Hi all!
I just aquired a lovely, sweet chestnut gelding. He's 16.2, young and tattooed.
Here's a link to photos of him and his tattoo:
http://community.webshots.com/album/568605032AKpHNR
He came from New Holland, so I have no info on him whatsoever. I thought the tattoo said J26238, but when I called the Jockey Club, that number belongs to a filly, so clearly I suck at this!
Can anyone help with clarifying the tattoo?
Thanks so much for any help you can give!

How old is he supposed to be?

Good question!
The dealer who brought him to auction said he was 6, but if you look at the pics (especially the second to last), those are some pretty little teeth!
A quick teeth check by the barn farrier (not my own farrier) estimated 3 or 4-ish?

E 2001
F 2002
G 2003
H 2004
I 2005

3 or 4-ish would make that an H or an I. FWIW I still think it's an H.

Hi Carol Ames,
I uploaded a few more shots of his teeth, and tried to take another of the tattoo from the left side-- they're on the second page of the same album:

Maybe this will help with the age and the tattoo?

Does anyone else think that he just lost his third incisor baby tooth on top (and maybe still has the bottom one?) I'd put him at a long four year old, which would be H.

And the winner is . . .
Barn Fairy!
I called the Jockey Club back, and with H as the letter, we ran everyone's guesses (the JC was very patient!), and the only possible match is H26288. I've ordered the full report on him, which should be delivered via email late this afternoon.
Someone has to know his story. The JC did say he raced in the MidAtlantic. As a few of you noted, he's well-fed and in good condition. He showed up at New Holland clean and with a fresh clip job. He's sound, a lovely mover (big, floaty trot!) and my pics really don't do him justice-- he's a handsome boy.
I haven't had him long, but thus far, he hasn't given me a minute's trouble-- self-loads, cross ties, great ground manners, stands for mounting, and is sane in the schooling ring. He's low man on the totem pole in the pasture, and isn't particularly concerned with the chaos of a busy lesson barn and farm.
Obviously, there could be something horrible about him that I just haven't discovered yet, but right now, how this horse ended up on a dealer's truck to auction mystifies me. Someone's clearly put some time and effort into him.
I'll let you all know as soon as I get the report! I don't know a thing about racing, so I may have to impose on you all for some translation . . .

Adding, I'm sure it's worrisome to wonder "what is WRONG with this horse??"
If he has racing plates on, in all likelihood, nothing.
Wrong owner, wrong trainer, wrong time. It happens every day to completely sound, perfectly quiet sweet, nothing wrong with them ponies.

GOOD LUCK! he's a very cute boy! and still a baby! maybe you got lucky and he never raced.
i played hell figuring out my horses tattoo as well. the jockey club was great and just kept sending me description after description until one fit. i was able to get a hold of his sire's barn and they sent me info on his dad, and they are built exactly the same, it's funny.
when you get your info try to locate the sire and dam's owners, they may be able to give you a better history. i got the dam foaling charts of all the babies she'd had, and by who and what they ended up doing. very interesting stuff.

Okay, the email from the JC just came in, and this is really funny-- his name is "Fret"! Yup, just . . .
Fret.
I can't stop laughing-- what a terrible name for a horse! Maybe someone was a guitar aficionado? After all, his dam's name is "Axe and Slash." At any rate, a new name is definitely on the agenda!
The records say he was foaled April 2, 2004 in Maryland. Bred by Barbara Kees and Robert Ingham.
Looks like he raced once as a 2 year old at Laurel, and six times as a 3 year old at Delaware Park and Laurel, before he was claimed for the owner listed on Pedigree Query. Raced three more times after that in 2007 at Laurel. This year he raced once at Penn National and 3 times at Charlestown. Last time looks like April 10. He only won about $22,000, so I guess that makes him a terrible racehorse.
Anyway, that's about all I can tell from the report. If anyone can tell me anything about his pedigree, his breeders or his most recent owner, I'd love to hear it! PMs, of course, are welcome!

Well, I can tell you that Concern produces some mighty fine jumpers. The one that comes to mind readily right now is the steeplechase super star (of the moment) Good Night Shirt. Concern stands at Oklahoma Equine, which I believe, bought several stallions from Maryland. I believe Concern used to stand in MD (hence the MD bred part).
I don't know his owner or breeder. Do you know his last trainer?
As for the reasoning he was at the sale...there are lots. I've seen many sent to New Holland because owners don't want them around anymore and trainers want to get rid of them quick. Often there isn't a thing wrong, but sometimes there is something hidden (hopefully not in your case). I saw a LOVELY mare that was well put together, not a blemish on her, but was sent to NH because she was a bit "cooky." She did end up going to a nice home, but it did take some time for her to get rid of the attitude, if you could even call it that.

Could you tell me what trainer had him last?
If Robert Cole was his last owner, thats pretty interesting.

Videos of some of his races are available on calracing.

You have to register, it is free. Then click on the Horse tab, type in his name and press search, then click on the button that says "Fret". 6 races from Laurel available there.

Furlong47,
Oh. My.
He really wasn't very good, was he?
Well, it appears it's all for the best that he find a new line of work! Maybe as a Fox Hunter, Show Hunter or Jumper, if he's inherited his papa's genes as SteeleRdr mentioned. . .
Really cool link, though, and it was neat to see him run! Thanks for posting it-- I never would have found it on my own!

Not sure what happened to him, but if pedigreequery's correct, his FULL brother made almost $200,000.
Back to hunter/jumper side: From some of the horses I've sold off the track, I've had people looking for Prince John in the pedigree -- which he has on the dam's side --- he must throw decent jumpers, also.
At least he was taken care of before going to the sale -- he is nice & fat.

I LOVE his name! Oh, I would totally keep it. I think it's clever and reminiscent of the big single named horses (like Cigar ) I hope you sleep on it. :)

big single named horses (like Cigar )
Gulch. Swale. Both faves of mine. I love the name too, and was hoping it was guitar-related (and based on his dam's name, it is -- it's a pretty good double pun though with his sire being "Concern").
I have to say that I have never SEEN a horse so comfortable with having his mouth messed with! My experiences with tattoo-peeping have been much more raucous. What a good boy! Do-di-do, I don't care, pull my lip all around, I'm a happy boy, do-di-do.

His breeder, Barbara Kees, is a longtime horsewoman and trainer in Maryland. Her son is Timmy Kees who trained many National hunter and equitation champions.

I think it could be 26230 or maybe 80. Run all the options and see what is close.
He seems very cute! Good luck with him...let us know what you find.
