I was reading an article about her earlier today and I think the estimated selling price was $7 - $8 million.

She was sold to one of the partners involved - Southern Equine.

So the $7 million estimate was close .

I had no read anything and I guessed $8 Million, posted this prior to knowing Southern Equine bought her back so yup, $7 million is more like the "real" price (at least for what they will be paying) but still there were bidders, i.e. Coolmoor (sp??) going for her. Still it was great fun to watch!!

I think he owned like a 75% stake in her, so in reality he paid about $3-4 million to buy out the others.
Still, it's a $14m valuation, pretty incredible for a broodmare, esp one that's not in foal.

That was what I couldn't get over...........not in foal!

Ah, that makes a bit more sense - the buying out of the partners. Still I was looking at the back of the envelop math and it just doesn't make economic sense. Her last foal was aborted per the article I read which isn't a good sign. While yes back to back off spring have taken the Belmont each horse never ever repeated that sensational, early at 3-yrs old, win.

Looking at the bigger picture it is one of the moves that puts added pressure on the industry to over pay for her foals when they do come to market.

It seems to me the last record-breaking broodmare was also sold not in foal. I think it was Playful Act?

I don't think the industry will feel any obligation to help Southern Equine pay its bills. ;)

I was in the pavillion at Fasig-Tipton when she went through the ring.....It was worth waiting around most of the day. They ran a 5 minute video highlighting her career at a broodmare...including the stretch calls for both rags to riches and Jazil in the Belmont, and Casino Drive in the Peter Pan.....

The room went silent when they recalled the call "in a battle of the sexes....its going to be....A FILLY in the Belmont"......

The video was of course, for the poeple that had come out to see this wonderful mare sell, and not for the buyers.

When she came into the ring the auctioneer stated that he really couldn't add to that...althought there was one thing he was required to tell everyone....he said "I do have to say one thing...and I think we can all forgive her for this......she is a CRIBBER"

it was a good time. Lots of applause.....

Same for Stardom Bound...she revieved a well deserved round of applause when she left the ring....and she behaved BEAUTIFULLY! She was soaking up the attention....staring at the cameras and posing. Like a true professional. (behaved better than all of the other horses....and she's only 2)

How dare he. We all know this is an unforgivable offense against all things equine! She'd be turned away by barns all over the country because she can't keep her mouth to herself. Good thing she'll never see the inside of any of those barns.

Um, it's a mandatory disclosure statement. Cribbers have to be announced, and if you look at the bid board, it will also say "Cribber."

That was a joke, although on second reading it didn't come across quite the way I intended it. The folly of text communication strikes again :D

Yes, cribbing is a mandatory disclosure. I remember back in the 1980s it was still considered a serious problem of which European buyers were especially unforgiving. Seems to matter less to people now, though I know there still are varying opinions on it.

Southern Equine owned 70 percet, so paid $4.2 million, essentially, to buy out Sikura's 30 percent.
