Which way does the velcro go? I think it's the first tab goes front to back, and then the top tab goes back to front... is that right? I have these (http://www.horseloverz.com/Roma-Fetlock-Boots-pr-202350.html) boots, and just want to make sure I'm putting them on right. Thanks!

Generally, I would do double velcros so the top one goes front to back-sort of streamlined, if you like. Then if the horse brushes against anything, it will slide along the surface rather than catching.

Does this make the remotest sense?

I agree with atr, unless the bottom strap has elastic. You never want to pull elastic towards the front because it will pull against the tendons. Elastic straps should always be pulled towards the back (against the cannon bone) even if the top strap ends up facing forward as a result.

The old mantra for putting on boots was buckle to the back - meaning all strap ends point to the back end of the horse, same applies to velcro straps. This wos only superceded by buckle to the outside on a few odd boots like open fronted ones, and the old style skid boots. This is all to prevent the buckles getting caught on things and still, in the days of non-buckles, seems a good thing.

I guess I'm just confused with the double-lock velcro because the top strap isn't pulled tight or anything, it's just securing the middle layer.. so I would think the first velcro you do is the one that would be putting pressure on tendons and such, and so should be front-to-back, while the second/top velcro is just pressed down to keep everything in place. Who thought double-lock velcro was a good idea???? It's so confusing!

First velco goes back to front, second goes front to back. Keeps it from catching on stuff.

I agree with you and this is how I do it!

I was taught that the straps on boots should pull against the bone, not the tendon. In single strap boots, that means the straps point back. In double velcro, the top straps point forward, while the under straps that actually DO something point back.

I don't think it REALLY matters (wasn't there a study on this, and wrapping polos?) but it's one of those things that was drilled in when I was young and I just can't let it go.

In the case of ankle or splint boots though you are not pulling tight against anything. Proper application is to apply them above where you want them then slide them down into the proper position.

There is no pulling on bone or tendon just slide down till the stop. Straps to the back is as said so they will not catch and undo.

The double velcro woof boots I had came with directions that showed the bottom front to back and the top back to front, so that's how I've done it since.

Im with Simkie and Amastrike. The first (elastic) velcro goes front to back because of the tension. The top strap is just there for extra confusion purposes.

But what if there's no elastic?

Okay, I'm about ready to just cut off the top velcro strap and be done with it! Clearly the people who decided that double-lock velcro was a good idea have never actually attempted to USE it.

No matter. The top strap on double velcro is just decoration. The main strap always goes front to back, in my mind. Call me hard core ;)

Sorry, should of phrased that better. My front boots have elastic, my back boots do not. Both are double velcro. Both go front to back.

I don't think it REALLY matters

I know wrapping polos DOES matter. I have seen bandage bows. I haven't ever seen them from boots, but I would rather be safe than sorry, especially in the case of legs and soundness.

Those ones the first (bottom) strap goes front to back, top tab goes back to front. You want to match up the shape of the hard protective shell with the shape of the leg, so that the boot functions as it's supposed to. The whole "front to back so it doesn't come undone" thing applies to the strap that is actually holding the boot on.
