What anti-inflammatory do you use and which ones are "medically" proven to work?

Have used MSM with very good results. And it is pretty inexpensive. 10,000 mg dose.

Tried MSM... 10,000mg dosage. Found some research (Horse Journal) that states 20,000mg is a good dosage for acute issues, then decrease back to 10,000mg. Also, see my post a week or so ago... Pain Management was the thread, I think.

Also tried Devil's Claw Plus (with yucca) by Uckele and plain Yucca Saponin. Both worked when there weren't acute problems.

Bute has caused ulcers in my older guy. Younger guy is doing well... helps more for pain though, then inflammation.

I've got Previcox on order for both boys... 0.1mg/kg. Pretty cheap at $ 0.40 a dose. (Previocx is the same thing for generic Firocoxib except is targeted for dogs, while Equioxx (same drug) is for horses...). Hope to start the Previcox soon.

I think that's everything that I've tried.

I use MSM as an anti-inflammatory. I use a joint supp that contains chondroitin sulfate, glucosamine, and HA - while those are common ingredients for supplements to help with arthritis and related issues that also include swelling, none of them are anti-inflammatories. ;)

Use bute as needed, which is not that often.

Alot on that list is not primarily anti inflammatory, more used to treat the underlying causes of pain and inflammation.

I have my old guy (30+) on Devilsclaw, and he's doing great on it. Before, he'd stumble out of his stall to the point where I was afraid he'd fall down. Now he's cantering around the field! He's not ridden, but he seems so much happier.

I use bute or banamine. I like to stick to things with empirical data to support efficacy and known/studied info on side effects and drug interactions.

Yes, but I was thinking of non-prescription options. Or do you thinkg that any non-prescriptions are not proven?

I didn't mean to sound snooty. Sorry. LOL

I don't use non-prescription stuff like that because when I need it, I need it to work. And...I want to know what I'm dealing with.

For example...I know a lot of people use Devil's Claw as a substitute for bute....but there's not really much regulation on what's in there, there's no empirical data to support that it does the job you need it to, and it has side effects too. Only....no one has spent significant time or money investigating any of those things.

I don't just give medications willy-nilly--so when I DO need an anti inflammatory, I want to use something that I know works....and that I know interactions...and that I know what to look for as far as undesirable side effects.

I, too, stick to bute and banamine when needed. I did try devil's claw in a joint sup once and my horse refused to eat it.

Anyone with experience with Surpass?

I have heard good things about Surpass and Equioxx

They're just not things that I would normally keep on hand.

If I were trying to get a fever down, I'd use Banamine (or whatever the vet recommended)

If I were dealing with some swelling as a result of some acute injury that wasn't real painful, just swollen, I'd use Bute.

If I were dealing with something more painful, I'd use banamine.

..etc etc.

I keep Surpass, Previcoxx and banamine on hand. My horse does not tolerate bute.

I had a pain management thread a few weeks (months?) ago, to find out what folks are doing for their horses with chronic low grade pain. I've got Jazz on a double dose of MSM once a day, and an ounce of B-L solution (primarily yucca and devils claw) once a day. This worked well enough to have him pasture sound and happy. Now that I've started riding him a bit to slowly build muscle and see how rideable he might be able to be, I've added 1/2 a gram of bute every other day. Most folks will say that isn't enough to do anything -- but with him it has been. I'm very encouraged by both his attitude and soundness.

Can't use bute because of stomach issues, so my horse takes Previcox.

Our vet recently recommended Aspirin for one of our older arthritic horses.

HA, I use different stuff for different reasons....kinda like how I used human drugs of Tylenol, Advil, Ibprofen and Motrin..... and it doesn't help my dad's a doctor, so I am use to drugs working NOW

Anyways....the Mare and when the old man was competing horse have the REAL stuff of bute & asprin (down here in GA they use Naproxin)...(and Isoxs for her feet problems)

The retired man is on B-L Solution (Devil's Claw & Yucca), Asprin and MSM....I use Bute on him when I really need it to work fast

Have used Surpass (loved it) and have Banamine for the colic prone mare
