Anyone going? Any predictions?
There are a couple I'd like to see in person but I really need a baby like I need a hole in my head...we're debating whether or not to take the trailer down.

We went and bought Bristol VT for my daughter. We've been muddling around with buying her a horse for over a year now, so I'm relieved we've finally done the deed. We're thrilled with him! Now we just have to wait for him to grow up!
There were 3 2yos for sale...Alfa Romeo and Fantine both went for $6,700. The other 2yo, Riviera, went for $3,500! Fantine was very pretty. The high seller was the weanling Riley's Reason, that was being donated for the Tech Memorials for the 2 girls. He sold for $7,000.
Prices were pretty low.

$7000 is pretty low for the high seller. A good friend of mine is the breeder is Riley. I may be biased but he was a gorgeous colt. I've know his dam since she was born and have known his granddam for some years now. I'm glad he was the high seller.

Majestic, he was a VERY nice colt. Bidding started a little slow on him, too, and I was worried that because he was a weanling, the right buyers weren't there. It was nice to see him as the high seller
Fantine was my other pick, although I liked the yearling Bacarra. I have a thing for plain chestnut mares I guess...and both of them were really nice movers so they really didn't have to have the bling, IMHO.

I'm pleased to see all the good comments about Fantine, by Fabriano. Her dam, Unmistaken Habit xx is in foal to Fielding for 09...and if she goes on time...might be his very first foal!
VT chose Fielding in part because of how nice Fantine turned out. And I'm so close to VT that I'll get to see the foal in the flesh when it arrives!

They had foals by Sinatra Song and Tiamo this year. Were they there? Has anyone seen them? Just curious how both look.

Glad I didn't go....I might have come home with Ranier VT or Ever After VT if they were selling for lower prices!
I'm thinking of going next year but we will see. I need a baby like a hole in the head and already have two potiential broodmares of my own if I ever get my farm done!

Did anyone catch how much the Idol broodmare went for?? I think her name was In With a Splash. :)

How did the Catch on Dream mare do? And what did her SF foal sell for?
Are there results posted anywhere?
BelladonnaLily

In With A Splash sold for $2,300, in foal to Baladin d'Oc. She was really nice.
Dream A Little sold for $1,800, in foal to Baladin d'Oc (which is the foal that will be eligible for SF papers)
Her weanling was actually a Nevada filly and is registered PHR. She sold for $1,800 as well (I think, it was near the end and I wasn't paying close attention).
I don't think the results are up yet. I got most of the prices and if I get time, I'll list them all here...just know that they are unofficial...I could easily get something wrong! ;)

Congrats on your new purchase, BelladonnaLily!:)
I'd love to see the results if you can find the time. Had a horse show, so I couldn't make it down to check it out.

Thanks to everyone who came down for the sale, and congrats BelladonnaLily on your winning bid on Bristol! He is such a cutie and I'm delighted you got him!
The prices were indeed pretty low, which is worrying considering the budget cuts we are currently facing, but I'm delighted with the results in that all the horses went to super new homes. Three of the youngsters were sold to GP trainers and the broodmares went to great breeding homes. We are also delighted that Riley did so well and very honored and humbled by the amazing gesture by the Giunti family to donate this outstanding colt to our program with the proceeds going to the memorial funds established for Nicole White and Emily Hilscher.
We are still loading out some of the horses today, but I will get the official list of sales prices up hopefully tomorrow.
Although our youngsters are available for sale throughout the year, this is an important event for our students and I'm BEYOND proud of them and the job they did - it is wonderful to see them build partnerships working with their horses and then see their hard work pay off in this annual event.
Back in the saddle - the Sinatra Song colt was sold privately, but we still have the rest of the 08 crop on the farm. If you are ever our way please stop by and see them! We love showing off our babies and broodmares! :)

Thanks Fenway and Volte! We're VERY pleased with him. He is very calm and easy-going and my daughter is completely in love with him. I thought she was going to sleep in the barn with him Friday night!
I did want to correct something...Fantine sold for $6,500, not $6,700. Sorry about that! I think I got everything else right but I'll let Volte put up the official results so I don't get anything else wrong!

The Nevada filly went to a super young lady near Warrenton. She does the hunters and is thrilled with little Ever After! I will PM you with her contact info so you can stay in touch!

No Doubt is incredibly-bred for the jumpers (dad was a GP jumper/producer and mother has already produced a GP jumper) but he comes in a plain bay wrapper and was in a pretty gawky growth stage. He, as well as the Palladio filly and one of the Royal Appearance yearlings, were snapped up by a hunter/jumper rider in Southern Pines for a song!
The Sinatra colt was a stunner. He was out of one of our best mares who was named Grand Champ as a weanling at Raleigh and was one of the top 6 mares on her AHS tour. Her colt by Wild Dance last year was shown by our students to Reserve Grand at Lexington and was 4th in the GAIG/USDF championships at Devon. Klaus Schengber came down in June and said he was one of the best Sinatra Songs he's seen. Unfortunately due to a series of mishaps we never had him ready for the shows his summer, but hopefully his new owner will campaign him next year.
FHC - we try to prepare the students for the inevitable and they know it's part of the process. They love working with the youngsters and they (and we!) enjoy staying in touch with the new owners as much as possible. However, it seems every year some of the kids really fall in love with their project horses and are successful in getting mom and dad to come to the sale on their behalf. Two of the horses this year were sold to their student trainers! :)
As the breeder, it can be hard for me to say goodbye to them too. The chestnut Fabriano filly Fantine VT was my personal fav of the last five years. I almost cried when the hammer fell! She's headed to a GP trainer who is a very good friend of mine, so at least I get to see her once in a while and follow her progress. :)

I think auctions in the US can be almost fire sales, unfortunately.
Does anyone think these prices represent "today's market prices?"
VT has good mares bred to good stallions. Glad I am on the other side of the country. The temptation would have been too much.

I know I had to sit on my hands. If we had not just started building a house. I definitely would have gotten a Royal baby. My husband would have killed me.

I don't think it represents todays prices but I certainly do think it will effect them. I think the highest quality show winners will continue to get the higher prices ($10-$15K) but that the majority, most really nice, even premium foals, might need to come down quite a bit if they really want to sell it.

Although the auction prices were depressed this year...Virgina Tech delivered the quality! It appears the foals sold have promising futures with the buyers the sale attracted.
As for my reaction.....Whew hooo! Just wait til next year! I love that spalshy Palladio filly! LUV the name!!! Her dam is another of several Grande Saber mares producing color, temperment and movement!!
Grande Starlight is a double and second generation product for me.
I bred both her dam, Starbound by Starman AND her sire Grande Saber by Grundstein. I was offered the lovely mare Aleva, promptly tested her to be sure she was by the Olympic Gold Medalist Lucky Boy. She went to Starman in '92. You can't imagine how much I wanted a filly for my Dream Team!!
Grande Saber's dam was my very own supermom Can't Act by TV Commercial. Can't Act became the core of my breeding program as she continuted to produce very good quality super minded sporthorses.
Thanks to the VT Sporthorse breeding program, breeders like myself can literally watch the fruits of our visions producing under the direction of a showcase program! The Hokie mare roster is just as impressive as their stallion offerings! It is very gratifying to know that after a competitive career; Grande Starlight has a home at VT and has begun her own breeding legacy. Good Luck in 2009!

Hi
I was wondering how much the riding horses went for at the sale..?
I really wanted to go, but I knew if I went I would end up with a few more horses :P in 06 I ended up with 2 horses [Brooklyn VT and the saddlebred, Wilbur...] lol
VolteVT
Nov. 5, 2008, 12:47 PM
The riding horses all went for less than $1500, but did go to good homes. We no-saled the Argus daughter when the bidding stopped at $800.
BITS - No, I don't have any good photos of the Sinatra colt, and am kicking myself for letting him go before I got some! :)
WV - thanks for supporting us in '06! If you have any photos of Brooklyn I'd love to see her!

Does anyone think these prices represent "today's market prices?"
It depends on the "market" we're discussing - the equine market as a whole or sporthorses?
Working for an equine veterinary practice, I've been asked frequently in the past 6 months if the recession is affecting horses around us.
At first, the best response was 'the people who weren't calling the veterinarian before the recession are the same people not calling the veterinarian now'.
A few months passed, and now it seems like you can't GIVE a horse away. I'd say AT LEAST once a day we have someone tell us that they are looking to give a horse away, and we never have anyone looking to take them.
Since I began working with the veterinary practice over a year ago, we'd never had to deal with/work with animal control. Now, we've met with animal control twice in the last week. Sadly, we're seeing the effects of the recession now.
Yet, I know someone that sold a hunter/jumper type for over 50k this week as well. I think the horse market is following the real estate market... if you have a niche horse (a successful, sound 3'6" hunter) or a niche property (a nice horse farm) then you can possibly make a good, fair sale.
