I got a bag of TCC today for my horse with breathing problems, the issue hasn't been figured out yet, I was told by the first vet that she was paralyzed on both sides and to put her down, but after some bute and soaking her feed she hasn't been making a sound... so we're not going to do that!
I saw on the Triple Crown webpage that Complete was good for horses with Heaves and breathing problems but it also says that you should feed 1% of the body weight... she's a smallish (15"3 small boned) TB so most likely 1000lbs, so would I really give her 10lbs??? That just seems like a lot of feed.
I know senior is about 1scoop=1lb so would she really get 5 scoops a meal?!?!

I believe the recommendation for Complete is to feed at about 1 % of body weight if you are feeding it as a SOLE RATION.
I believe their recommendations for a horse that is getting hay is to start at about 6 pounds.
One scoop MAY equal one pound, but NOT if you are using the standard 3 qt scoop. I found 3 qts about equal to 2 lbs, but this seems to be regional. You need to figure out how much YOUR feed weighs--grab a gallon sized ziploc, toss one scoop of feed in there and hit the fruit scales at the grocery store.
Edited to add: actually the TC website doesn't mention 1% anywhere on the Complete web page. http://triplecrownfeed.com/completefeeding.php I recommend you read the directions there and weigh your feed.

Definitely read the link that Simkie provided and follow it.
Weigh your feed...don't try to estimate.
Good luck!

I feed Complete to my bit of a hard keeper TB and he still only gets about 7lbs a day split into 2 feedings. He's a big boy though 17.1 hands. I measured and weighed mine on a cheap scale in the ziplock baggie. Using one of these (http://www.smartpakequine.com/ProductClass.aspx?productclassid=6542&cmPreserveSource=true&cmPreserveCategory=true) scoops. 3 lbs was about 1-1/4 scoop.

Just a warning, TCC is very calorie dense. My horse loved it like crack, but he acted like he was on crack and got really fat ;)

weigh your feed- you can buy a cute little scale at any outdoor's store, skinny cylinder tape scale with a hook on the end. you can weigh a hay net, feed, etc... and it's easy to slap in a drawer or on a hook on the wall.

I use these to weigh saddle bags (are they even?) weigh the fat cat (slapped her in a walmart bag and confirmed yes, she's 13 lbs of flab)...
Weigh it and know what you are feeding.
With that said, the amts listed on a bag often assume that's the only thing they are eating, no hay, nothing.
I feed TCC and like it, no way it's ever dusty and the horses look great on it. No one's high as a kite-ok one is, but that's him. My other three are same as they ever were.

I feed this but certainly not the amount they would recommend. My draft/cross would be eating pounds of it. :>) She gets 2 cups AM and 2 cups PM.

Why are you feeding it at all if your horse gets no benefits from it? Why not the Lite or the 12% ration balancer? It's isn't designed to be fed in such small amounts.

TC Complete is fed in what looks to be large quantities to horses that shouldnt have hay... at the track we filled feed tubs almost to the top after training and let the horses have at it... they usually finished it by the next morning.
For those that feed less than the suggested amount, your horse is probably not getting adequate vitamins and minerals that are mixed in the feed. I agree with the above poster, you should switch feeds.

She will be switching to the Lite. With that, she can eat 1 lb per 500 lbs of weight, and 3 lbs a day will provide all she needs, according to the TC rep.

That's good, saved yourself there draftgirl! I used to have my drafty mare on that but switched to the 12% supplement for various reasons.
edit: That website for TC feeds is wonderful. I wish more companies put all the info out like that, it's so easy to compare the feeds and figure out what to get.

My mare was on TCC briefly and was high as a kite as well. Never again, and certainly not in those quantities.
