I'm about to place my order for the Saxon turnout blanket and turnout sheet - one for each of my horses. However, I'm worried about the sizing. My smaller horse measures 76" and the larger 80". The sizing for Saxons come in 3 inch increments, though. I'm not sure whether to get a 75" for the smaller horse and an 81" (or 78") for the larger. Does anyone know if these blankets run larger/small/true to size? Any advice on the sizing issue?

Their sizing compares to the WB's Landa & Orican, so on the biggish side horizontal lenght wise.

I find the Saxons to be very disappointing vertical drop-wise. Unless you have a very thin framed TB, the drop is often so short, from a sideview you can see their bellies stick out, so definitely no way you can wrap the blanket under to protects bellies a little more.

Other then that they are okay blankets.

I have two horses that measure exactly as yours do. The smaller guy would wear a 75 and the larger would do with a 78 as far as length is concerned. I used to use the Saxon (and Weatherbeetas and Big D's) for both of them, but I'm still blanket hunting this year. My 80 has filled out so much in the past couple of years (read: gotten fat plus grown into his stock horse lineage...16h 1300lbs) that I'm not able to find a blanket that doesn't choke him when he puts his head down to graze, including the Saxon. My 76 has THE biggest shark-fin wither I've ever seen that is now magnified by his aging, drooping topline so most blankets hang on his wither and rub him. Anyway, before these conformational challenges amplified, a few years ago, I was very happy with the Saxon blankets. I think they're a decent value.

Thank you both very much!

The Saxon's fit the same as the WB in the length.
They do stand up fairly well. I fix blankets and I get just as many WB's as Saxons.
I agree about the Saxon's drop...
They are very short, leave the belly too bare and make my guy look like he's wearing his little sisters skirt.
For that reason alone I will not buy them.

I have 2 large horses-17.1 and 17.3. Needless to say, finding a blanket w/ deep sides can be hard unless you are familiar w/ the brands. I bought a Saxon for the 17.3-terrible:no:. He looked like he had a mini dress on. The length was fine, but the sides were terribly short. I stick to Weatherbeeta, Rambo, etc.

My little 15 hander's Saxon raincoat fits her like it was custom made. ;) She measures exactly 72 inches, and the 72 fits her like a glove.

I think they run just a tad large, but the horses I used them on were lightly built, not tank-like.

Thanks for all the help!

I think I may still get the Saxon for my smaller guy since he is fairly thin-framed. However, I will probably go with a WB for the other one (she isn't very tall, but really wide). I've always been told that WB's run really large, but how large? Do you just go down one size, or two?

I would go for the 75 for your 76" horse and the 78 for your 80" horse.

Good luck!

Saxon is the entry level of weatherbeta blankets,so the sizing is the same as all of their other lines. The difference is that the drop is shorter than the other ones.plus the difference in denier etc.

Go down just one size.

For example, my guys both wear an 87 Rambos and all other brands, but the Weatherbeetas the take an 84.

I find this very true! My horse's blanket 2 years ago was the Saxon and we all joked for the longest time that he was wearing a mini-skirt! You definately see their bellies (my guy is a 16.3h thoroughbred). Last year I purchased the WB Landa and what a huge difference in the length! This one definately covers their belly. Sizes are about the same. 81 Saxon; 78 WB. I went bigger for my horse on the Saxon-it fit him better in the shoulders with the bigger size.

Agree about the short drop! Hubby's horse borrowed my horse's Saxon (a size too small for him, but we were waiting for his to come in) and he looked like a Vegas showgirl: all legs, belly, and butt sticking out!

But for the money they seem durable, and they keep the guys dry.

(cllane's DH)

Our boys have Rambo WUG Meds, but we wanted lights to fill the spring/fall gaps and didn't think it worth the money to buy the Rambo Lites.

The Saxon's fit the smaller horses well but the biggest on (my TB) it was a mini skirt.

I ordered Amigo sheets for the yearling and the OTTB and they have a LOT more drop to them. I think for the money the Amigo's are the way to go.

Just remembered another thing I don't like...that the Saxon's leg straps are not removable.
They are permanently sewn onto the blanket.

Greenhawk shedrow blanket. They have a plaid light fill turnout that is long and has high gussets. Fabulous blanket.
