PolymerChem
Oct. 29, 2008, 08:13 PM
The horse/rider combo was Significant with Laura Bowery. I watched them start their first two fences then got the feed back to watch Significant swim the oxer and fall, so I don't know exactly what happened. Laura was rattled but did walk out under her own power. Significant popped back up and took himself to the outgate; he didn't appear to be injured but he was off camera pretty quickly and I was mostly watching to see if he fell on his rider.

Oct. 29, 2008, 08:15 PM
I think it was Laura Bowery, my feed keeps freezing so I didn't hear the name. She and the horse fell together. Horse got right up, she stayed on the ground for a few minutes but did get up on her own. I hope shes ok!

They show the horse/rider name in an on-screen inset at the beginning of the course, but they do not show the score board (or announce scores that I've heard).

I think the jump size is a little decieving. I was watching the CC live feed and the 3'6'' looked SO tiny until you got a good view of one of the oxers and then realized it was true height.

I don't know if I just came on this live feed at the wrong time, but the past 10 or so rounds I've seen for the low junior/ao have just been terrifying. oi... not up to par. I don't know if people are having a bad day or what, but some of the distances those riders are getting their horses to--I mean it warrants a move down to childrens for a bit in my book.

edit: of course a second after I type this I see a really good ride. Might not have been the fastest but the gal had an excellent full seat and kept her horse together nicely.

I bet its because they also run medium here, not just low and high. There has to be some difference in height between the three sections. Some of the riders you normally see in the low are going in the medium I bet.

I think Scott Stewart opted out because there was no way to get to that second jump.
The woman and horse that fell (over the same jump) could have been a tradegy- that horse landed on his neck with his head sideways- we all thought he could have broken his neck. He got up though- so did the rider.
Those horses were all gorgeous- quite a few chestnuts and alot of chrome!
Of course you probably heard that George Morris was ill and not at the clinic:(
John Madden is the master at PR - during the Q & A -somone in audience commened that if the Parelli system was used , whips and spurs would not be needed.
He explained the purpose of such and she persisted- I wouldn't have been so polite.....

Yup but they also have low/med/high at WEF, Level 6/7/8, which is what I always thought it was.
Level 4 is children's height, maybe some people are having problems with the smaller height, combined with the smaller ring, their eyes might be off a little.

I didn't see them go though- stupid classes are getting in the way!

They also dropped the Children's and Adult's so they probably wanted to be as inclusive with those riders as possible as well as them having the Medium and High sections....but I do hope the people criticizing can ride those courses blindfolded....and are competiting over much higher levels...it seems these boards are just full of people who put others down and have a comment for everything...

Um, no matter how I ride, I still have eyes and can see that this kids aren't doing well. You don't have to be a magician to see that.

and ps- It would be completely different if I was telling these kids how to ride and what they are doing wrong. I'm not critiquing them. I'm saying they are riding like scary childrens jumper riders. And that makes sense. Because now I know that that is probably what they are.

There have been some saintly horses! Did anyone see the girl on the gray who got in real deep at the last fence and the horse jumped it? There was a rail, and she was way up on his neck, but that horse got her across the timers and then she fell. And because she fell after the timers, she didn't get disqualified! I think it's faults converted, which does not penalize refusals, except for the time it takes to spin around and try again.

PolymerChem
Oct. 30, 2008, 05:53 PM
It's not just you - they don't add time for stops. The time taken in circling/regrouping is the penalty. Places a premium on regrouping quickly although I think there are enough clear or fast single-rail rides that no refusals will place.

did anyone watch supershorty go? not bad! i would be so nervous if i were her. That course looked extremely tough. Congratulations!

Thanks! I was so nervous that I was throwing up all morning.. even though the lows are only level 4 at this show and I did level 6 most of the summer, I've never been to a show with an atmosphere like this one, and neither has Nikki. She usually backs off in the first trip, but got really strong today and I wasn't sure what to do (hence the rails). I'm pretty confident that she'll be her normal self tomorrow.

:)

Edited to add: For the people who are commenting about the lows only being level 4, here's my viewpoint, having now done a class. I did the low juniors at level 5 and 6 all summer and was planning on doing the mediums up here until my trainer considered the atmosphere and how technical the courses are. Many of the people in my class today competed against me this summer and did the lows for the same reason I did. It's not that we're all "scary children's jumper riders," but a lot of us are very nervous and the courses are not very forgiving. Please just keep that in mind before commenting on the rides you're watching. It's very easy to judge from one round; it's much harder to keep everything else in mind.

I noticed the same thing, there was a picture of him in the chronicle recently, maybe an issue a few weeks ago and he looks like he is at least 70 pounds lighter and I agree he looks extremely handsome. As for McClain, the horse stopped at the big oxer out of the corner an he fell off, he got right up the horse trotted off and I think may have stepped on the reins but it all ended fine.

There were only 4 which surprised me but I don't think Music Street was one of them. It was a great class and cool that they gave it prime time but too bad it didn't get more entries. I can't wait for the next class!!!

what just happened with scott stewart and music street? he went in the middle of the fenced in combo, made an awesome turn, and left the ring...

The horse wasn't going right so he pulled up. He tried to take the 2nd jump of the three-stride, but it was pretty tight in the box of jumps that he didn't like the approach and decided not to take it. Then excused himself.

That approach was the only way to get to the second jump. You could tell he was thinking hard about whether or not it was going to work - and it didn't that time.

How great was that - I am so glad he won. Just goes to show that even the pros have to deal with the ups and downs of showing. He fell off in the class before only to come back and blaze the win. What a cool class, Brianne and Hillary also rode great. Did you see Georgina's horse - Star Apple, it was bucking so high and kicking out over the jumps, definitely an athletic horse and she just rode like nothing going on. It was so cool to see, LOVE the live feed!!!!!

Anyone have an idea what is making the course so tough... adjustability? Scope? technical questiosn?

All of the above. It's a tough course but doable...it's spooky and technical. Tons of related distances that require consistent impulsion and jump poles on super flat cups with an extra triple bar, skinny natural roll topped hedges set as an in and out and pretty much everything else they could think of to make it spooky. Looks like it would be a blast minus the crazy pressure cooker situation ;)

I agree. One example - the controlled five off of the end vertical to the yellow one stride. That is a big combination - you need to come in with a lot of impulsion.

I really like the course - I feel like the less experienced or less well mounted riders can still get around without losing confidence but it allows the better riders to shine.

today's SI today http://www.syracuseinvitational.com/Portals/11/Sat%20TODAY%20Final%20opt%20LR.pdf

has a short article about the course "The course the juniors will ride was designed by Jimmy and
Leo. Jimmy said, “Leo and I gelled our ideas together and I went
to Richard (Jeffery) and made sure it would work in the ring.
There are long distances to short distances, and there are short
distances to long distances. Basically, they have to be able to
lengthen and shorten. I want them to ride a technical round in
good style"

Yes, you can get knocked off the standby list. I think they announced it in order of preference so those at the bottom. However in the Maclay they do the flat, which is supposed to be worth 50%. I think they usually do three sections of ??20?? or ??10?? so the standby list will become longer than the Medal.

I was going to say, I don't know anyone from Kent's group to ask, but that horse looked close but not quite right (too much white on the face and the tail was also too light).

Plus I'd really be shocked considering Kent has him entered in the GP tonight. But stranger things have happened and I haven't had much coffee yet so I wasn't sure I wasn't going insane either. LOL.

Where is the order of go? I looked at ShowNet and that doesn't appear to be accurate. Can anyone direct me?

hahaha I have no idea but I'm in the same boat. Three to ride plus I need to study at some point. Oh well, a little extra turnout will do my boys good and the indoor has lights ;)

Schedule shows something after 2pm - There's another class scheduled before the final round - but I am not so good at estimating from the number of riders

That's as near as I can figure it, too.

My *intention* was to watch this & do housework, but being me, I've got 3 computers going instead - one showing this full screen, one showing the Tattersalls sale full screen, and this one to chat on!:dead: I am such a couch potato!

were a bit more "sad" over here, there are 4 of us here and we have one computer hooked up to a TV set to watch it on a big screen. Just don't ask me how my friend managed to do that ..

Anyone staying to watch the flat phase and willing to give a report - I hope they do more than last year -

Flat is supposed to be 50% of score right?
