I apologize in advance that this is lengthy but I feel background is needed for the type of name I would like. I'll try to keep it short.

The links below are pictures to my "baby", Adagio. (I call him Dagi in the barn.) He is a 4.5 year old Percheron/TB gelding who currently stands 16.2 1/2. I rescued him as a yearling from a PMU farm in North Dakota. He'd never been handled, just lived out in a HUGE field with 45 other horses. When I decided to adopt him I picked him simply from a photo knowing nothing else about him except his cross. I think we all know what would have happened to him had I not adopted him. My show horse at the time, and the love of my life, (My Escort), was getting older and I thought that it would work out perfectly for me to adopt a youngster. By the time the baby was old enough to show my older gelding would be ready to retire. It would work out perfectly.

Things never work out perfectly though do they? I adopted Adagio and not even two years later my older gelding, "My Escort", tragically had to be euthanized due to a lypoma that had wrapped itself around his small intestine. It was quite the blow and I'm still not over losing him. Since then I've developed a tremendous fear when I ride. I had been fearless with Escort but now my riding and equitation have completely fallen apart. I can't ride anything without feeling some level of anxiety. Until Adagio...

With the help of my trainer mother I started Adagio last fall. He is the first horse out of all of our horses since Escort that I haven't been afraid of. He's tame as tame can be. Never stupid or silly, not hot or stubborn. He just seems to have been born knowing and is the sweetest most puppy dog/in your pocket type. My mother jokes that Escort told Adagio that someday Adagio would have to take care of me when he was gone. I feel like Adagio has big shoes to fill since he has stepped into Escort's spot. And while I know he'll never be able to replace Escort, or be Escort, Adagio absolutely amazes me. I honestly couldn't have asked for a better youngster.

I plan on taking him to an AWS (American Warmblood Society) inspection sometime next spring/summer but in the meantime I have to come up with the "perfect" registered name for him. This will serve not only as his registered name but show name as well. I named Escort after the idea that he was my gaurdian and best friend, 'My Escort' or chaperone so to speak. For Adagio I was thinking I kind wanted something similar to Escort's name, or something to do with having stepped in and taken after losing Escort. I don't know... I'm just looking for that name that just HITS me.

Some names I've though of but just don't do it for me:

Quintessence
Storybrooke's Number the Stars (I ADORE this name but would like it best for an appaloosa)
Intuition (over used)
Opportune Moment
As You Wish
Watching Over
Come What May
Semiprecious
Thimbletack

and my favorite thus far - Ferdand (*laughs* after the gentle bull who liked to smell the flowers. How terrible!)

Pictures: (sorry they're not wonderful)

I don't have any suggestions yet (will think on it) but I just wanted to say that names are INCREDIBLY important to me, and I am right there with you in the sentimental, meaningful department.

Do you think maybe something musical? Or with Adagio in it? I think Adagio is lovely itself...

Yes something with Adagio in it would be nice. It certainly fits him well but Adagio alone is so over used. I thought about shortening it to Dagi since that what I call him in the barn but I am afraid people will mispronounce it.

Perhaps something along the lines of "Best Man"? Tradition dictates that the Best Man steps up and takes the place of the Groom if he's unavailable.

Lots of nice Adagios around:

molto, cantabile, expressivo, molto moto, assai--- maybe you could spend some time listening to music and find a particular adagio that really fits?

On the other, escort, lines: Guardian, Guide, Soulmate, Companion, Security

I do like this concept... but The Best Man, or Best Man seems so boring on it's own. I wish I was I was better with maniplucation of words!! lol

This is a lovely idea too. :)

hmm... lovely horse.

Maybe something to do with "Adage", as that's taken from the root Adagio. I'll think on it.

A Day to remember
A Day Just For Us [A day j... kind of sounds like adagio, haha]
Inheritance

Sorry, I'll think of better ones.

What about Serendipity (or Serendipitous) for a show name? It seems fitting. I'm sorry about the loss of your old guy and so glad your youngster is there to prop you up.

"Serendipity is the effect by which one accidentally discovers something fortunate, especially while looking for something else entirely."

"Serendipity. Look for something, find something else, and realize that what you've found is more suited to your needs than what you thought you were looking for." Lawrence Block

Serendipity is cute but when I look it up on the USEF site there are a billion. :(

Heirloom just came to mind... but that kind of doesn't seem to fit.

Okay, going into the realm of weird associations:

If he were mine, I would name him Flanders Fields Adagio.

Because of a line in Flanders Fields, the famous WW1 poem narrated by those who are now dead: "To you from failing hands we throw the torch; Be yours to hold it high." Passing of the faith, from Escort to Adagio. Also, you found him in a field.

If that is too weird for you, feel free to disregard.

Beautiful horse and story, though.

Well, Adagio itself is a musical or dance word, so is quite beautiful on its own.

I've always enjoyed listening to a piece called "Adagio for Strings", but that is just not going to work for a horse!

In music, Adagio is primarily used as a direction in a slow movement.

In dance, it is a part of a pas de deux.

Honestly, the name itself is beautiful and fits the bill on its own and I don't know that it needs any addition to it.

If you feel you really want to simply have a longer name then perhaps something as simple as putting "My ___________" in front of the name, and it would keep in the theme with your beloved My Escort. Maybe even just calling him "My Adagio".

If you want longer, add "sweet", "perfect", "gentle" or some other descriptive in the name (ie, My Gentle Adagio).

OH MY GOODNESS NO! This is the kind of crazy "unheard of" thing I was looking for. Something unique! Unfortunately I don't know if I like Flanders Fields... maybe I can think of a play on it that would mean the same though! And thank you for the compliment!

What about something light-hearted like "New Recruit"?

What about "Andiamo Adagio"? "Let's Go Slow." Would be good if he's a bit of a forward mover or you want to move into your new partnership slowly and methodically. (And on another thought, it's a really bad name for a race horse.) "Onore di Scorta" would roughly translate to "In honor of Escort" "Con Passione" would be "With Fondness"

Just some thoughts for some Italian names, that would play on the Adagio barn name.

I have "Andiamo Bandito" in my barn.

Adagio cantabile-- slowly, in a singing manner
Adagio con moto-- slowly, with emotion/movingly (molto moto=with a lot of emotion)(expressivo=expressively)
Adagio stabile (slow, soft, and steady?)

You may want to check these with a musician and/or Italian speaker if they appeal.
