Anybody know where I can find a nice one? I have a sorrel mare, I assume she has no agouti, since she is not bay, correct? I want a black baby with color, so dad must be homozygous for black, no agouti, and a fewspot. She is super sweet, so the personality is there. Dad should be laid back as well.

Your mare could have agouti. As a sorrel, she has no black to be "pushed out to the points". She could even be homozygous for agouti. If you want to be sure of that black foal, you'd have to have your mare tested.

Thank you, I didn't know that. I will have her tested.

Look at Wapuzzan at Rugby Creek. Not sure if he's homozygous black.

You could check out Wapuzzan at RugbyCreekSportHorses. Few Spot patterned appaloosas are color producers but so are true "snowcap" patterns as is Wapuzzan to date.
Thanks Secretariat!!

To the best of my knowledge there is not currently a homozygous for black fewspot leopard Appaloosa sport horse stallion available.
The black appaloosa sport horse stallions that are homozygous for LP (fewspots and snowcaps) that I know of are:
Butterwap Confetti www.confettifarm.com
Wapuzzan www.rugbycreek.com
JAS Rockin Robin www.jumpers-appaloosas.net/Robinpics.htm
Waps Moonshine www.tsquare-appaloosas.com/
Waps Neon Moon (couldn't find a current website for him)

Are there a lot in Australia and NZ? It seems like tall order to find an appaloosa stallion that is homozygous for black, homozygous for LP and carries at least one PATN1 (fewspot if homozygous for LP) and is of good sport horse type. There are plenty of fewspot stallions that will not produce a good spotted pattern at birth because they really only carry one PATN1. They will always produce characteristics but may only produce an obvious spotted pattern 50% of the time on mares of non-Appaloosa heritage (and thus unable to contribute PATN1 to the mix.) I have a homozygous for black fewspot mare with the same issue. Her first foal has characteristics but no spotted pattern, only some roan hairs in her coat. I've got my fingers crossed for a spotted one this year (50/50 chance). With the stallions you have to study all their offspring with non-appaloosa mares and see if they *always* throw spots to know if they are homozygous for PATN as well.
If you aren't familiar with it, the www.appaloosaproject.info site has some very good information regarding appaloosa color genetics, research, etc. You have to pay for a subscription in order to have full access to the site but it is only $35 and well worth it.

I would look at snowcaps as well as fewspots. Our stallion is a large snowcap (but he is chestnut) and most of his offspring have had large blankets with large spots, and one near leopard colt.

What is the breed of your mare and if she has appy blood were either of her parents spotted (versus just roan)?
I believe there was some talk on the Appaloosa Project website that with all genetics being the same (from the same parents, etc.) the chestnut foal will have the loudest color (largest blanket expression for example), a bay foal the second loudest and a black foal the least of these three colored coats. For some reason black does seem to suppress color expression and it is interesting that although bay is a black base with agouti thrown in it allows color expression better than just black alone.

There is semen here from a Knabstrupper who is fewspot (homozygous LP) and black based though I don't know if he is homozygous black. He also has the PATN gene.

Look at Collected Remarks at Topaz Farm for an appaloosa sporthorse type stallion, though I believe he may be bay, but he throws sport types. He had a black full brother that died a few years ago, so he is probably heterozygous agouti. www.topazfarm.com I'm hoping to breed a mare or two to him next year. Altamonts list is very good as well! The breeding on all those boys is great (plus I bought Neon Moon's dam and Moonshine's granddam).
