There are some really weird things in the comment area for each horse.
For example: Paint Tipper's description: Gelding; Age: 1991; Riding Level: Beginner; Tendencies: Can't be left in B40 pasture in winter months-when lying down his tail will freeze; Medical History: Wormed: 5/08, 8/08"
or this one: http://www.maascompanies.com/itemresponse.asp?id=4854&pid=142&p=322.jpg
Description: Mare; Age: 1991; Riding Level: Advanced; Tendencies: If not tied in stall, will turn around and poop in manger; Medical History: Wormed: 2006x3 (Fall), 5/08, 8/08
What on earth? How about some relevant info? LOL

It is odd but, they are just random trail people so I think they are just saying what they know about the horses that they really don't know anything about.
I might try to buy 341.

All of it is just so sad. I am sure most of these are really nice riding horses and worked at their ranch for years. Might be a great opportunity for someone looking for school horses.

That's what I was thinking as well. Unfortunate that people that don't really know them aren't putting good info in there about them. It sounds like some grumpy workers, and probably some unhappy horses. Get them in a better situation with regular and correct handling, and I'd imagine most of them would be just fine.

I think some people are going to go home with some really nice horses. Most of the trail horse problems go away when they have one rider who is consistent. I personally want the draft cross - he looks very cute. Too bad it's in MI, from what I hear that state in particular has been hit hard by this economy so there probably aren't many with much extra money to buy all those animals.

What does "butt tie only" mean? I must be dumb.

Oct. 22, 2008, 02:39 PM
The descriptions are hilarious, puzzling or both. Their stallion has "arthritic flanks". His riding level is "Julia"?? One POA is listed as "Spawn of Satan".
A very interesting bunch of horses for sale. Wish I could help.

I'm in MI and yes, it's a bit rough here...I do hope they go to homes and not killers. They seem to be in good flesh too so they must have gotten decent care. I head the camp was pretty good.
wonder what the golf carts will go for?? I noticed you can bid online.
I will be out of town that day :( otherwise I'd go.
the poor dogs too! I sent an email to a Husky rescue here in MI...hopefully they will help.

From what I've been told to "Butt Tie" a horse it to put a rope behind the horse while its in the standing stall.
From the descriptors, most of the horses are in standing stalls hence the if not tied will poop in manger. Yes I have seen a horse turn around in a standing stall if not tied.

This auction is from a Dude type ranch and resort that is under a Court ordered bankruptcy, The horses will be going VERY cheap. The big problem is you cannot take these animals the day of sale, the judge will review the winning bids and than determine if there is a sale . You than have 7 days to pick the animal up .. The descriptions aren’t descriptions, they are notes that were used by workers to handle the horses. Theses horses were in general handled by weekend warrior workers who really didn’t know anything . A couple of rescues will be bidding and are looking for foster homes and donations . I sincerely doubt these horses will go for over $150.00 the Dogs stand a better chance of finding good homes.
Some of these horses probably will make nice riding animals , but it will take time and patience. These animals did work hard and did not have good lives at all .

Mike how did you get this info?? I call MAAS and they did not call me back. I am interested in 341 but, will be out of town...also maybe a golf cart. How do you suggest one get in touch with these people?? keep calling??
I'm glad you think rescues will be there... we are all sad about this place going under.

I'm trying to get my ducks in a row so that I can head to the west side of the state next week and bid on one of these guys. I was thinking about doing the internet bidding, but since I'm only a few hours away and I think I can get some time off of work, I think I'd like to see them in person.
The older I get, the more a BTDT-type horse appeals to me. I've been thinking about picking up a nice, calm QH or Appy for a few months. This seems like a great excuse! Now I need to narrow it down to one, hope I don't bid against a rescue or another forever home, and get boarding lined up... Oh, and I need to tell the hubby, too.
Cross your fingers for me!

Is anyone here active on the Alex Brown/Friends of Barbaro forum? I saw a thread on the auction and it sounds like they are making plans to buy up as many horses as possible. I couldn't figure out how to log on and comment on their thread, but I'm trying to figure out how we can make sure that we aren't working against each other.

A bunch of us from the Ludington area are coming down to possibly buy some. :)
I have a wacky Morgan mare, and I'm going to look for a slightly more sane stock-type to just bomb around on for fun.

We also are organizing bidding for therapy horses and are trying to get a list together so we do not bid against horses that other good homes are interested. Try to keep the $ low so everyone can still afford to feed them. You can PM me to get added to the list. I also have information on some of the animals and their suitability for beginners & school horses.

Poor horses all have wire injuries.

Oct. 24, 2008, 04:08 PM
we believe that "butt tie" means to put in a standing stall with a rope behind... and to NOT tie at the front.
Each and every one of those horses sound the title of threads on this forum. "My horse is cranky"...
The saddest one is the laminitic mare who was bred recently and the notes say "always lame" ... well duh...
There's a photo of rushing / running horses along a lane with T-posts and barbed wire.
When I think back to the fiasco that is ongoing with the 2 men from Grass Lake that were supposedly starving their 80 horses (they weren't .. they had some injured and old horses that had been segregated) and lost those horses only to have the case dropped after their horses were auctioned off and given away... I compare the care and soundness of those 80, to these that are part of a riding program... I shudder.

Ok Titan, I did the online thing. I bid up to $225 on 341. I also bid on a golf cart :) but, not very much.
I gather that a person there bids on my behalf from the internet. I'll have you ask when you get there about it...and still help me out :) so, I'll call you later in the week.
I saw on the Barbaro sight that many of the horses have more then 1 person bidding....not sure how that will work. Denise's mini donkey seems like a popular guy and my green broke pony!
titan
Oct. 26, 2008, 09:15 AM
I didn't notice the pony was on the list...but it might be included in my group (titan999). Some of those lists are longer than the number of horses these people can bid on and I know some of them don't have the funds collected yet. We'll keep in touch!

BUMPING
there are many people all over working on plans to buy these horses but, I'm sure more buyers will be needed. You can bid online or in person or donate $$ on the Alex Brown forum.
several people have ridden many of the horses and say they are good guys and gals! :)
Thanks!!

The dogs are all sled dogs. Poor things don't make the best house pets. I hope they all find appropriate homes. I felt sorry for the one that said it had Lupus and needed to be kept out of the sun. It looked so sad with some kind of skin condition on its nose. And I hate seeing dogs on chains. I couldn't even look at the others.

I was so surprised to see the Double JJ go down in bankrupcy. This place has been in business since, I think, the 1930s.
I went there several years ago with two of my girlfriends who love horses and had a great weekend. Although their food wasn't the greatest, the horses were well fed and seemed to be taken care of. The horse that I rode one day on an abbreviated "cattle drive" was #329 Dunnit. She was a sweetheart. At one point we were being taught how to seperate a cow from the herd. When it was my turn I asked Dunnit to go into the herd and try and pick a cow to seperate. Well, once I picked a cow, Dunnit proceeded to bite it on the butt and all heck broke lose. I don't think that technique was in any of the cowboy books.

That's funny. Yes Dunnit is in the sale and looks cute. The beginner horses seems to have prospective buyers and does some of the others. Hopefully most will find good homes.
I also read that a dog rescue was going to take the Husky's...I hope they do!. I can imagine how hard they have lived and how going to a family would be really difficult. They are special needs dogs at this point.

So, I wonder how the auction went. Did anyone go?

Oct. 30, 2008, 06:41 PM
About an hour into it, the auction was cancelled. Seems an investor purchased the entire property for $8 million and will keep it in operation with all the same employees and animals kept on. It seems that many of the then former workers were there to bid on the animals as they didn't want them to go to bad homes. It seems like this was a wonderful outcome to what was a bad situation.
I got this info from a rescue who was ready to bid on some of the horses.

This is the message from the auction house.
"The Trustee determined the best way to give the resort a chance to re-open was to sell the personal property (which includes all equipment & livestock) as a single lot to the prospective owner. Individual Sales have been cancelled with the intent to keep the property together.
We apologize for the inconvenience and thank you for registering.
Valerie J. Breitbach
Maas Companies Inc"
and the amount that has been quoted several times is $150,000 for all equipment and livestock. I have not seen any amount for the rest of the property. It has also been mentioned that the trustee would ensure the horses are well cared for and will not be sold at auctions. He has the name and contact number of rescues that would take them.
I do not know the place at all, but have followed the story on the internet and I am hoping the resort will reopen and people will get their jobs back.
