Need some recommendations - it's winter shopping time - what are the best gloves and breeches for cold winter riding? Thanks :)

I ride in my regular breeches with kerrits tights underneath.

For gloves I wear thinsulate lined leather gloves I buy for $30.00 at the non horsey store. Expensive, but last all winter.

I live where it is regularly below 20 degrees and often single digits in Jan/Feb.

These are great for chores (http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/links/link.jsp?id=0005133920107a&type=product&cmCat=SEARCH_all&returnPage=search-results1.jsp&No=54&Ntk=Products&QueryText=mittens&sort=all&Go.y=8&_D%3AhasJS=+&N=0&Nty=1&hasJS=true&Go.x=11&_DARGS=%2Fcabelas%2Fen%2Fcommon%2Fsearch%2Fsearch-box.jsp.form23&_dyncharset=ISO-8859-1)

Backtrack to their "gloves" pages. They have numerous variations in men's and women's types.

I like the Irideon winter breeches. But has anyone noticed an EXPLOSION of new brands and styles of winter breeches this year? Yay for Christmas lists! :)

Gloves are very personal, but I adore the Kyra K fleece-lined deerskin ones. They are so warm I have to take them OFF halfway through lessons.

I like the SSG winter training gloves. Mine have lasted ~ 9 years, but I don't do barn work in them -- just riding and standing around. I have the Irideon winter breeches and love the fit. However, I don't find them all that warm even though I ride indoors. Actually, they're warm enough for riding on most days, but not warm enough for the before or afterwards. Maybe the windrider line is warmer. I also have Tuff Rider winter breeches. They are very warm, but the fit isn't as good as the Irideons and I also think they're ugly. I'm thinking about getting some kind of overpants to wear over the Irideons when I'm not mounted.

my vote for gloves are the heritage winter gloves... i forget what the actual name of the style is, but they have a waterproof layer, fleece, thinsulate, and a hard-wearing outer layer and fake suede palm. they are durable and warm, and flexible enough to ride in, though you might have to take them off to buckle your bridle.

i have been known to school in devon-aire fleece britches underneath jeans, with my suede full chaps on top. i get cold easily. hahaha.

The Tropical Riders Toasties are supposedly fantastic, but for me and my budget, nothing beats the Irideon Wind Pro Fleece Breech. I also have a Wind Pro fleece from Mountain Hardwear. For really cold days (30 degrees and under) I will wear Cuddl' Duds long undies under the usual riding outfit.

Devon Aire is now making budget Wind Pro breeches, but I saw them in the store and was disappointed with their construction. They'd be fine for a once-or-twice-a-week light user, like someone taking lessons, but they're not going to stand up to the abuse that the Irideons will take.

I love the Devon-Aire fleece breeches. Soooooo comfy and they reasonably block wind! in conjunction with Ariat Frostbiters and thin wool socks, my normally freezing self can battle the elements.

For gloves, I actually ride in cheap fleece gloves. I'm a size 8 in normal gloves so many of the SSGs don't fit me. Second, I really like feel in my reins and I don't get that with many winter gloves. Lastly, I'm usually so warm in my body clothing that I can comfortably ride in cheap fleece gloves. I've ridden in normal "driving" thinsulate gloves as well as my faves - the cheap fleece ones with the plastic-like finger grips.

Patagonia R1 Fleece (http://www.patagonia.com/web/us/product/product_focus.jsp?OPTION=PRODUCT_FOCUS_DISPLAY_HAN DLER&style_color=40213-155&ws=false&patcatcode=SEARCH.SEARCH_TERM:R1.&searchkeyrefferer=esearch.jsp&encodedsearchkey=Ntt%3Dr1%26psDrilldown%3Dtrue%26s earch.x%3D0%26OPTION%3DESEARCH_DD%26search.y%3D0%2 6N%3D3500466%26psPageNumber%3Dall) under my summer breeches.

Honestly, this stuff keeps me going in the winter. It's WARM, thin, and (on ebay) not very expensive. It is amazing stuff.

I have extremely long fingers and wear a size 8.5, so the women's gloves never fit me. However, the Men's SSG gloves in a size small are perfect!
