I trusted him too much. He has been so incredibly good lately. I hadn't ridden him in a few days and should have stuck him on the lunge line. We were in the woods with 2 buddies, and a couple of dogs. Dogs go running and rustling in the leaves... horses start acting up. I get through 2 pretty good bucking episodes... and thought all was ok. Then one of the dogs comes running up again from behind, just as we get to this little tiny ditch. My horse lunges forward and downward over the ditch and rips 2 or 3 good bucks. I was history. I landed on my butt and back..thank GOD. I just had knee replacement surgery and this horse is 17.2 hands tall. I think that is like 7 feet down isn't it.. from the saddle?

Anyway... I am very sore but ok. If I had landed 5 feet ahead of where I landed I would have landed on a huge boulder. Thank God that didn't happen. I did have my helmet on.

Never trust the greenies... even the good ones! It was cool and crisp and he's only 5!! He's never done this before.... so I don't really blame him too much. I should hav prepared him better.. Live and learn.

Glad to hear you're okay! Sounds like you have a pretty good attitude about it as well.

That is why I never ride with dogs....of course it could have been anything to set a horse off but in my opinion-dogs and horses just don't mix. Glad you are OK-with all of the circumstances...you are a brave person!

See, if the horses are used to the dogs, I think riding with them is GREAT, because they run ahead and flush out the da%%ed deer well before we get to them, and then I don't get spooked by the deer running across the path under my nose. But, chaque a son gout, as they say. It can go either way. Glad you aren't too banged up. Our horses were fresh and sassy today too. The cool weather will do that.

Glad you are OK. Nothing like a greenie in the woods to blast off!

I agree about getting horses used to dogs while riding out. Once they sttle in to the dog routine, the dogs can be helpful doing reconaissance, plus what if you ever decide to hunt him?

Is this a "Waquoit-a-saurus?" At least ofr a few days you'll be a La Gringa-a- sore-@ss" but Advil and Merlot can help. Lot's of time will help the horse.;)

He is a cutie, despite this...unfortunate incident.

I'm glad your ok. I hate it when my 17 hand tb launches me (knock on wood, its been a while). My next horse is going to be short! I don't care if my feet drag the ground.

I have actually ridden with dogs before, he was fine. This time he was just really fresh, the leaves were on the ground, the horse behind him started at it, and then he did too.

I actually made it through 2 pretty good episodes... my stirrups were a hair long and I couldn't make it thru the 3rd round of it.. he really let them loose.

He's a baby, and really I should have lunged him. My fault. He gave me a false sense of security, he's been a superstar lately... but the weather was warmer.

Nothing like a cool fall day to get the horses riled up!

I am fine, just sore and a bit banged up. I will mend....

Yep it's my Waquiot greenie. He's been super good for months. His first bad day... so I can't be too upset. He's coming along. He's just a OTTB... and a tall one!!

Hope you're feeling ok today! I also came off this weekend, but not with quite as much air as it sounds like you got. First cooler weather ride. Even the old guys were feeling frisky!

Advil and wine and a bath. Repeat as necessary.

Oh no! Poor you! That's like falling off the Empire State Building. You have time on the way down to think about how much it's going to hurt.

Time and experience will cure all. Don't feel bad; my filly was having hoppy fits on our last hack triggered by... the leaves falling around her. Greenies.

I agree. My dog puts the idiotic Wild Turkey on the run before they get the chance to chase my OTTB. He is ok with deer but those turkey are aggressive and huge, flappy things...hate them.

Glad you're ok OP but rest assured you are not alone...even the dead calm and old horses at our barn are all bonkers lately, makes for exciting hacks!

Here's the lecture: Why were you riding a green horse without a helmet?
