View Full Version : Why do some paddock boots 'eat my socks'

What causes some socks to scrunch up in paddock boots? Too much room, too little? Socks to thick? Thin?
It makes me nuts.
Socks are either too stretchy or not stretchy enough. Or, they start out just right, but stretch out/lose elasticity after a few wearings/washings.

OH, my biggest pet peeve!!!!! I hate the sock slippage thing!!!!!
I think you need socks that are tight enough around your ankle that they don't get sucked down into your shoe.

The perfect socks for paddock boots are Gold Toe crew socks. Found at Penny's.

Or... Zoks, or whaever you call those nylon-ish, colorful knee high socks. I love them.
In the winter, those Smartwool socks, all the way. But I'm pretty sure that the Gold Toe ones from Penny's probably work just as well, if not better. Plus, probably a lot cheaper.
And, ditto on the hating sock slippage. I hate it too.

I only have that problem in shoes that are too big.

In my experience, too much foot motion either inside the shoe (too-big shoes) or inside the sock (too-big socks) is the biggest cause of sock slippage. There are also socks made of certain materials (usually not very stretchy) that will be particularly determined to slouch down in the most uncomfortable manner.
This is my very un-scientific appraisal of the causes of scrunching.

I have had this problem w/ other boots MANY times, but never my paddocks. I think I would question the fit of your paddock boots (loose around the ankles and heel?).
A stretchier sock would also probably stay put better too.
I wear plain old black ankle high not that thick socks to ride in. The really thin ones seem to sweaty, the really thick ones don't stay in place well and I like to feel the stirrups better.

This is why I fold the tops of my socks over my boots. Stops them slipping down! :

MG this thread cracked me up! I go out every morning to feed in my muck boots, and every morning no matter the socks, they end up balled and falling off. So nice to know it is not just me :)

wow, I've not had that problem for years. hmmm. I've been wearing my husband's socks lately or heavier and taller ones in the winter. I think tube socks used to be a problem for me. My husband buys his at Kohls and they're hanes... mostly in grey or lately they come in black, too. I think women's socks are too thin or short or cheesy and I'm in work boots, or ariats, or muck boots all the time. I wear 8 1/2, so it's not like I have huge feet!

I would say too big socks or too big paddock boots. I must be overly sensory-sensitive, but I cannot STAND socks slipping down in my shoes! I have found that I'm much happier with paddock boots that fit just a bit smaller than regular shoes might. I do find that I go through socks WAY too fast, but I have been attributing that to also liking to wear sandals with pedicured feet--nails that are pretty and painted are probably too long for paddock boots--but maybe someone has a great suggestion that will stop me burning through a pair of socks every 2 weeks or so?

I've found that putting some kind of inserts in the boot helps with the socks sliding down. Nothing is more annoying!!!
I use these, even in summer. http://www.longridersgear.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=515
Remember when you were a little kid playing out side with snow boots on and by the time you got into the house, your feet were freezing and the socks were bunched up on the tips of your toes?...lol

I love Gold Toe! Macy's quit selling them - I didn't realize that Penny's carried them. Thanks!

I've discovered that cotton socks always slide down when I wear them in my paddock boots. I think the problem is that cotton socks have more friction than either wool or synthetic, especially when they absorb moisture from my feet. I wear ski socks year round now: Smartwool in winter, and lightweight Thorlo in summer.

Smartwool also makes a lightweight summer sock .... I now own nothing but Smartwool socks and wear them year round.

H2 - do these REALLY work to keep your feet warmer? I hate cold feet ... once the toes freeze, my whole lower leg is pretty much useless for aiding the horse.

Gee I must be really cheap... I use the long, over the calf tube socks from Wally World and pull them up to my knees. NO slipping and I have very very skinny legs....Stick legs in fact.

OK this is funny! I guess there are more balled up socks on toes than I realized!
The issue sounds to be a size issue. I have my zip up Ariat Paddocks and they do run a little wide for my feet. I put in a Dr Scholl insert for the extra space.
I have ridden in Gap crew socks for YEARS but maybe they are just too old and now deciding to slip.
I tried Under Armour crew socks (what I had around from running) and they are a DEFINITE no.
I have Thorlo's, will try those next before trying the socks suggested here.
Thanks!!!

Maybe, its because you aren't feeding them properly.

Ohhhhhh how about fresh sand between the toes!

If I have that problem, they go in the trash. HATE toe-balls of socks.
Use masking tape around the ankles if it happens mid-day, or god forbid in the morning.

I call those boots "Sock Suckers".
I hate them.
They ALL do it, unless I get lace up boots, that lace up snug around my ankle.
Dansko boots - suck socks.
Blunnies - suck socks
Ariat zip up - suck socks
Muck boots - a combo action of sucking socks WITH rubbing the heels so badly to get holes in socks.
Custom E&M boots from guys at Upperville, have zipper...suck socks.
Justin Lace-R work boots that lace up and are not easy on/off? They don't suck socks.
a FEW socks won't get sucked off, but then they end up with holes in the heel.

thanks for the advice on a better sock .. i hope..

Sorry Star, I couldn't tell you...lol I'm going through the change and I'm always warm. No cold feet here.
Although when I first bought them, it was for cold feet, but I don't think they worked all that well at keeping them warm.
Perhaps post something on the "Endurance and Trail Riding" forum. I bet they could give you some great tips for keeping your feet warm.

These socks last forever. They are a bit more expensive, but last at least 3 times as long as regular socks.
