It's not as uncommon as one might think, actually. Though certainly some horses, once having unseated their jock, will either make a beeline for the backside or run willy nilly before apprehension by the outrider, those that stay "in the game" are at a distinct weight advantage.

About three years ago, the same happened at Churchill, but that horse even came back with the rest of the field to be unsaddled. :D

I thought that Gilbert Searchwell at Fort Erie was older than this guy. Correct me if I'm wrong-he certainly looks it!:lol:

According to the article linked Cuthbertson is the oldest; he is 59. I haven't a clue who this other guy is......don't follow running horse races, unless it is something odd like this.

Anyone watch the head-on of the break? The 7 leaped like a stag out of the gate--I don't know how anyone would have been able to stick with it. Almost looked like the horse was about to go up in the gate and then the door opened and he went forward while still going up. Considering the height he got, it's probably fortunate that Cuthbertson came off instead of getting squashed or flipped on.

Gillie has to be close to that, if not beyond it! And despite some SERIOUS spills (horse breakdown during morning work)he is still tough at it.

That had to be hairy for the other riders with the loose horse threading his way through the field like that, but man he did an awesome job all on his own, didn't he? How he waited and then dug in when it was time, and timed it so he hit the wire ahead a jump out. You gotta love those guys who run like that. :lol:
Wouldn't it be col if they ever had a riderless race? Never happen, but boy it would be interesting.

Hubby says Gilly Searchwell is 60. He'd know, as they are the same age.

But the article where Alan Cuthbertson is mentioned above at 59 is from October 29, 2006 (its inthe upper left corner), so he'd be at least a year older then Gilbert now.

It sucks when you get nipped at the wire, like that. But its a really strange feeling, to get nipped at the wire and look over to see their's no jockey on the other horse.
Hope the jock's okay...
