still looking for that elusive critter,,the flashy, sexy looking horse with the 'been there done that' attitude. MUST be safe and sane--hubby is a confidant beginner who likes leisurely walks through the woods,,he aspires to clicker train (though we all know the horse will have him trained to dispense treats in a heartbeat!), and likes to generally brush and spoil his pets. so,,no pushy ponies, please!
must also be flashy,as in high whites on a chestnut with a nice blaze or a dappled palomino.
(please don't bother sending me notices of otherwise perfect horses,,dh won't even look and we'll all end up annoyed at him).
minor soundness issues we can probably deal with, depending,of course.
older is fine,,must be well suited for an older man who likes to buy tack,,head out for an occasional weekend at a barn and breakfast, and otheriwse enjoy HIS special horse. (my perfectly wonderful mares are not HIS,,the man wants his OWN horse).
ok, cliff notes version---
safe,sane,reliable
excellent ground manners,trailers well,vet,etc.
please ground tie and stand for mounting from a block.
flashy--high whites on a chestnut or a palomino
older--good
15 hands range,,quarter horse build preferred.
minor soundness stuff probably ok
gelding preferred,please
we have our own farm,,excellent vets and farrier and references.
looking for cheap or free or lease- yes,, i know horses need a ton of cash,,i'd like to save mine for the inevitable vet bills!!
thanks!---have feelers out to the local rescues, too.

Hey Suz don't know if you saw my post about horses for lease... I know she has a big palomino gelding, 3 or 4 socks, and a blaze... probably 16h, I think he is about 17. His name is Toby.

Been trail ridden all his life, he's safe and easy and sane. Spent the summer doing ring work and popping over crossrails and hacking out with little kids on his back.

I'm headed out to her place tomorrow I can snap a few pics if you want.

there is one on the AC4H.com - under the broker page, horse # 8 on the 2nd page- 15 year old chestnut- 4 whites, says he's well broke for western.

adrianliv - this free forum is for "giveaways" - not horses for sale.

My guy would be perfect if he didn't have navicular. He can be ridden a few times a year only with a good amount of bute. Former police mount. Will stand on the cross ties for hours. Loves to be talked to.

I second that! Toby is an uncomplicated ride and super cute :-)

If it's Forrestel's Toby - you've got a third vote here. But you won't want to send him back next summer.... Guaranteed.

ok,,gotta see pix of toby!! thanks you guys!
had a nice chat with katie at ac4h yesterday,,sundance may be a candidate,,but he's a young'un! they have a couple of horses which may work,so if we can arrange it,,we'll make a road trip.
but dh is undergoing chemo,,we have to wait until his immune system is up to traveling. i'd rather find a horse closer so he doesn't have to travel,,but with his criteria we'll have to be adaptable as much as is possible.

Suz.... bad news! Toby found a home just last week.

BUT... she has another, his name is Blaze. He is the kindest, sweetest, mellowest beast on the planet. He is chestnut, a gigantic blaze (hence the name) and a sock or two I believe. Mid-teens now I think. He is probably 15.2 but beefy.

He *is* gaited, which puts some people off. But he truly is BOMBPROOF. I've known this horse 8 years, he has never put a foot wrong. Easy to handle, easy keeper, never lame, never off.

He is a fun boy with personality plus. He is not needy, but he loves people and attention.

Can't say enough good about him, if he weren't gaited I'd have probably stolen him years ago.

Don't know if he'll be flashy enough for your hubby but he could be a good option... let me dig up some pics of him.....

I have what you are looking for. Free lease or giveaway: 17 yr old 15.2 gelding. My daughter used him for Pony Club and Horse Trials and trail riding. Safe, sane and forward, a fun and safe ride. She could trail ride him alone when she was only 12 yrs old! We are located in Underhill, Vermont. He is retired from jumping, but not retired from life! He needs a new rider, I am not looking to "dump" this horse, as he owes me nothing, if he didn't work out I would take him back. He is very attractive, but no flashy white socks or flashy color, he is a bay.

Wow. You'll only take a free horse if it's flashy? With Chrome? Those are some balls!

Starboard, get a grip on yourself - there is NO HARM in asking for what her husband wants. Also, didn't you see that he is dealing with cancer and chemotherapy? That entitles him even more to follow his dream and look for EXACTLY what he wants IMO. This is a board with a lot of people from different places and the odds of them finding exactly what they want are actually very good - especially if they are patient.

I just think that your remark is uncalled for and I hope you edit it out (at which time I will delete mine as well) - this is very hurtful to the OP I'm sure, and if her husband is checking this list I would imagine it would upset him as well - he doesn't need or deserve that.

People on this forum can ask for the moon - doesn't mean they will get it, but they can try and see if someone else is looking for their exact request to rehome - happy ending for all. I have no idea why it would bother you if someone is specific about what they want in a freebie - as we all know, no horse is actually free when it comes to having it for the rest of it's life or however long you have it, so I think it's great that they are trying to get her hubby's dream horses this way. A win/win for an older horse and an owner trying to rehome him as well as for hubby.

Suz, best of luck finding hubby's heart's desire. Having gone through Chemo and radiation myself for over 2 years, I went out and got my dream horse too! Hope he does very well and that his prognosis is great - sending good thoughts for a total cure for him! I am almost at 30 years cancer-free (ugh, showing my age) and God-willing will never have it again.

Honey, free horses grow on trees these days. Even flashy ones. Not the point here.

Wow. You must have some balls to make that comment.

Suz,

I'm considering having the nerving procedure done on my guy and may be willing to rehome him after his recovery. After the surgery, he would be sound for light riding (trail riding on good trails at a walk) and possibly more. He's sound for OCCASIONAL riding right now (say, like 1x per month) with a good dose of bute. He is the kind of horse that anyone can ride and is an easy keeper. I ADORE him but am starting to feel the pinch of today's economy. He'll have the surgery at my expense. Look to my above post for a picture of him.

Simply an opinion, and I'll stick to it. It's ballsy to ask for a free horse, and require it be a certain color. But run with it!
I hope they find what they are looking for, and you never know if you don't ask I guess.
Of course i'm one of those obnoxious people who thinks horses deserve good homes regardless of what color they are, and especially since they are looking for a bombproof saint. How many of those are around?

Anyhow, good luck.

Starboard... you just haven't been around THIS board near long enough, hun.

Just chill out --- bide your time --- and one day hopefully you'll understand how you are the one in the wrong this time. sylvia

thanks folks for all of your wonderful responses and private messages of hope and comfort. hugs right back at you,sniff...

and starboard, why bless your heart--and thanks! i do have absolutely the biggest balls around! (well, ovaries, technically!)
fwiw, over the past few years hubby has funded rescue/rehab/rehome efforts for seven needy horses. now it's his turn and he deserves what he wants. so sue me!!!!
for now we're focusing on his health, he has experienced a complication and we're rolling with that for the moment. his prognosis is still good, but for now he feels too lousy to be in the barn.
the right horse will come along when the time is right, i'm certain.

Good luck--hope you find the perfect horse! Anyone who has funded the rescue of 7 needy horses has surely accumulated enough good karma points to find his once in a lifetime horse!

Without knowing the backstory to this post, starboard, you probably just had the same reaction that I did...."wow, a dappled palomino with chrome, bombproof, big, and free?" That might be near impossible, as that is everyone's dream horse! But there is a backstory that we don't know, and it's a good one, so I'm sure suz will find her hubby's dream horse somewhere. I wish you weren't in New England, because I saw your exact horse the other day on Craigslist for a mere $800...but it's here in Columbus, Ohio! Big palomino gelding, gorgeous, bombroof and childsafe.. I couldn't imagine why he was so cheap...but these are some tough times for horse owners, I guess.

UPDATE-----still looking for hubby's new buddy.
we've looked at several horses over the past few months, but for lots of different reasons have not found HIS horse. dh has had a rotten winter and is finally feeling well enough to start bugging me to get on it and find him a horse already--so here i am again.
thanks in advance, i know his horse is out there waiting to come home to vermont.
