last night, I watched, [for about the 100th time] Calamity Jane, one of my all time favorite movies. There is a scene toward the end where Calamity, Doris Day jumps on a horse and goes off pell mell to catch the stage. I am sure it is a stunt double but it sure looked like her. Anyway, it is about a 2 minute scene where she is riding hard and the horse is terrific! Does anyone else remember that? Do you have a favorite scene in a movie?

Absolutely hands down my favorite is the last few scenes in The Man From Snowy River when the guy rides his horse down the mountain and rounds up the mustangs and brings them in! Swoon!

I second The Man from Snowy River! LOVE IT. Also, though, I LOVE when in the Black Stallion, he spots the field a bazillion lengths and they flip back and forth from island galloping to racetrack galloping. Gives me goosebumps just thinking about it! But then, I'm a pretty big nerd ;)

The snowy river movies are awesome. I also love the whole movie Hidalgo, but especially the last scene, where Hidalgo gets up, and Viggo races the last few miles bareback through the desert.

Both of those, plus the scene in Seabiscuit- not at the track, but at the farm, when they're galloping through the trees on grass. That looked like tons of fun!

My all-time favorite galloping scene is in King Arthur (the one w/Sean Connery).

I can't remember all the names of the characters but it's when they're galloping across the field (for some reason I think it's at dawn) on their way to Guinevere's 'home'. She's on that white mare K.A. gave her and they are stretched out and moving.

Just glorious to watch. That horse is holding nothing back and is, in fact, reaching for the turf for all she's worth.

Just love it. sylvia

ps - have never seen Man From Snowy River but I have seen that particular scene from the movie. Guin's Race for Home beats it hands-down.

I don't remember the name of the movie...Nicole Kidman and Tom Alien Cruise. I'm not a fan of either actor...frankly never liked Cruise. But there was a movie about them coming from Ireland to claim free land here in the states (I think that was the theme) and there was a scene where there were a lot of riders and wagons waiting for the starting time to go claim their land. A rifle goes off and the resulting galloping scenes were pretty surprising! The riders were galloping flat out...not a speeded up canter and those wagons...yeesh! I wouldn't have wanted to have been on one of those. Kudos to the stunt drivers! It was a pretty memorable scene, just can't remember the movie's name.

Okay, found it on youtube...movie was Far and Away and thry do have the land race scene on there. Just watched it...I remember it a little more exciting than that but I have a shot memory, LOL. I think the movie had more real time and less slo-mo. I also don't remember the horse getting "hit" in the face. (although it's movie angles and not an actual hit)

First of all, I love "Calamity Jane", and I've wondered if that really is Doris Day, too. Her outfit in that scene was to die for, too....looked like butter soft suede.

My vote's for "The Black Stallion" on the island, too. That was a beautiful movie. I cry every time, and I'll never forget going to see it in the theater. We were waiting for the theater to empty, because we knew the movie was over, but everyone was inside watching the credits. Beautiful. I think a lot of people became horse fanciers because of that movie.

The Oklahoma Land Rush.

My favorites are all the galloping scenes in the 70s Three Musketeers movies. They race up and down these beaches in France, carrying messages to the Queen. Love those movies, and many of the horses look Spanish and gorgeous.

The scene in the first Lord of the Rings movie where Arwen (Liv Tyler) has to outrun the Ring Wraiths to get Frodo over the river is pretty awesome. Show in slow motion, Arwen's riding a fabulous baroque horse that does lead changes and really stretches out, and the Ring Wraiths on their big black horses all come together in a V chasing her. Really powerful.

YESSSSSSSS, beautifully shot and choreographed. I also love the immediately preceding scene where she's galloping amongst the yellow flowers and then into the wooded area where the wraiths are.

Also, the scene from the Black Stallion that Big_Tag mentions always makes me weepy!

I second the fox hunting scene in Mame. Also, there was a British mini-series on in the late 70s called Flambards (http://www.amazon.com/Flambards-Collection-Set-Christine-McKenna/dp/B00005J74P/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1222809862&sr=8-1) that has some great hunting scenes. If your library has it, it's worth checking out just for those scenes.

There are so many great ones its really hard to choose!

Definatly have to agree about the Man from Snowy River scene, that has been a favorite movie of mine since I was a youngin'. Also the Seabiscuit scene on the farm where he just lets him go and he gradually gets faster and faster. The Island scene from The Black Stallion is just amazing. The last leg of the race in Hidalgo. Also love the scenes when Gandalf? is riding Shadowfax (even though not all of them are really amazing galloping shots) But The Man from Snowy River is probably my all time favorite.

For me, it's got to be Bobby DuVall in Lonesome Dove when he was loping along then suddenly ambushed by a tribe of Indians. Bobby did some very fine riding in that movie. Plus I loved his character "Gus".

Another actor who I love to watch ride is Kevin Costner..esp. in Silverado. Dancing with Wolves wasn't too shabby in the riding expertise either.

Sigh.

Velvet Brown and the Pie. That smile on Elizabeth Taylor's face when she comes in on him.. actually in any scene.. is just so real somehow. That gorgeous flying gallop over the white stone fences... just everything.

I loved The Silver Brumby (correct the name if I"m worng, I think I am), great cinematography, in some case I couldn't even figure out how they did it. Loved Man from Snowy River. I have in fact done what he did down the hill (not wholly intentionally I must add!) so it doesn't "get" me the way it gets others. I know it's my Dad's favorite.

Worst scene.. as in a great movie scene but so mezmorizing and terrifying you can't forget it, is the car chase in International Velvet.

I just watched all of these again on youtube, and this is the only one that made me cry. When he went over the cliff, even though I swear I've seen this movie a hundred times, I had a big old sob get caught in my throat. I had a horse way too much like that damned horse - now I have the Bold Regret son, and he's a pain in the ass! I'll take my cracker horse again, but he's been dead for many years :(

Definitely The Black Stallion.

There are a few scenes from old Westerns that I really love, too - Stagecoach has some really great galloping scenes, and there's a really spectacular scene in The Searchers as well. John Ford really knew how to photograph horses.

For me it would pretty much any gallop scene from Phar Lap, but especially the workout sequence where he figures out how to run past the grey working with him and they slow the speed down as he's galloping along by himself before he's pulled up.

This youtube video did a nice job of capturing the highlights: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=neQMrO6r5KM

Phar Lap is always going to be my FAVORITE horse movie, even though I refuse to watch the ending now.

I also liked the scene from the final Lord of the Rings movie where the riders of Rhohan (spelled that wrong, didn't I?) go charging into the final battle at Ministrith (really spelled that wrong). And the Man from Snowy River would be a close 3rd.

'Mask of Zorro'!~ I love it when Zorro is on the roof and jumps off towards his his loyal mount, only to have the loyal mount move out of the way, letting Zorro fall on the ground!!!!:lol: OMGosh, that's soooo funny!

Also, 'Dances with Wolves', when the horse is being stolen and stops dead in his tracks. Just love it.

I think my all time favorite movie would have to be 'National Velvet'. Sooo beautiful.

When Seabiscuit is match racing War Admiral, they are neck and neck, until his Jockey gives him the "go a head" and Seabiscuit starts tearing arse... gives me chills every time.

Or when they are hunting Buffalo in "Dances with Wolves" and Kevin Costner coming flying over a slight knoll on the plains on Cisco.

I cannot, for the life of me, remember the movie but it had Yul Brynner in it ....may have been Taras Bulba...and there was a charge scene, head on to the camera, then they cut away to a spectacular shot of the horses jumping over a camera in a ditch. Incredible footage for that day and age.

The funniest horse riding scenes undoubtedly have to come from The Villain aka The Legend of Cactus Jack. The scenes range from the horse doing unbelievable rescues to a drunk Jack on horseback wondering where the horse's head is.

Well, I've never heard of this movie but just watched the clip and you may have convinced me. I've got to see if I can get this thru Netflix.

Being older, my favorites are:

1) The 1940s version of Zorro -- "The Mark of Zorro" starring Tyrone Power. Lots of good riding in there plus the opening scenes in Spain show cavalry students learning to attack with the sword and then the lance.

2) One of John Wayne's cavalry movies features a scene where unbroken horses are delivered to the troops. An old codger (probably a lot younger than me now, LOL), kinda skinny, jumps onto one of the unsaddled horses and gives it a big kick in the ribs and it SHOOTS away -- and he stays on just fine.

3) "Scaramouche" (1952) with Stewart Granger features some terrific scenes of French troops chasing Granger across the French countryside at full gallop over stone fences, etc.

I find it astonishing that no one has mentioned Colin Firth as Mr. Darcy galloping up, then stripping down to hop in the lake at Pemberly in Pride and Prejudice. That's near perfection there

The final chase sequence from the Man from Snowy River. Hands down.

But for pure silliness, I was howling with laughter at the end of a Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, when Hero and the virgin are trying to get away, and the soldier is trying to catch them, and all sorts of chariot scrambles, including regularly changing partners in chariots. I forget how many chariots were involved, but I remember wondering, while laughing, how on earth many shots it ever took them to get that scene. Hilarious.

I am a sucker for The Man From Snowy River...the way they tied the poem into the movie is just fantastic.

"When they reached the mountain's summit, even Clancy took a pull—
It well might make the boldest hold their breath;
For the wild hop scrub grew thickly, and the hidden ground was full
Of wombat holes, and any slip meant death.
But the man from Snowy River let the pony have its head,
He swung his stock-whip round and gave a cheer,
And he raced him down that mountain like a torrent down its bed,
While the others stood and watched in very fear."

Damn! you made me cry! What a movie.

Also, back to The Black Stallion - towards the end of the movie when Alec is racing against the other 2 horses, and he noticed Black injured his leg and it's bleeding terribly. The gates crash open and Alec tries so hard to pull up but can't control the Black as the other horses gallop off.
Finally, Alec gives up fighting Black and he lets him gallop on, tearing off his helmet and goggles, grabs mane and hauls ass.
Then as you're sucked into the film with the beautiful music and slow motion, you're taken back to the beach where Alec and the Black ride together in perfect harmony bareback. . . then you're taken back to the track and you find yourself screaming as Alec is galloping down the stretch and catching up to the others, "Go! Go! Go Black!"

Sorry - I got carried away. Whatever happened to Kelly Reno anyway. He was such a cutie.

Another favorite scene in Seabiscuit is when the Biscuit is making his comeback race and can't find his will. Then Gary Stevens comes up on his horse and challenges the Biscuit and you can see it in his eyes and he tells Red, "Have a nice ride." Makes me mist everytime I watch it. Oh, the irony of ironies...

After graduation, he planned on acting more, and acquired a new agent. His plans were put on hold when his pickup truck was hit by an 18-wheeler and he suffered severe injuries. After a long recovery period he had lost most of his film connections. Reno is now a certified truck driver, and drives an 18-wheeler like the one that ended his acting career. He has three children from his first marriage.

I have two:

"The Black Stallion" when Alec finally gets on The Black on the beach, and they gallop through the waves....sigh......

"Lonesome Dove" when Gus and Pea Eye are running from the Indians and his horse breaks in two bucking. Robert Duvall told us that that was not supposed to have happened, and that was HIM riding. They left it in the movie because it was interesting.

The race scene in The Quiet Man!!!! I love that crazy race across the beach and over the fields. And then the end, when John Wayne deliberately ignores Maureen O'Hara's hat and snatches the widow's hat instead (must see movie to understand), and Maureen's redheaded fury as all the other riders sweep past and ignore it too...

Others - pretty much any hunting scene from The Irish R.M., but particularly the early episode where Flurry tries to deepsix a rival by selling him a wild filly, and nearly kills the major instead.

Alan Rickman as Colonel Brandon on his black horse in (I think) Sense And Sensibility, riding to save Marian's life.

At the end, he (and his rider) gallop across the green fields and there's a lovely aerial shot. Just gorgeous.

Yeah that is awesome... and when she runs thru the water and you can see the tidal waves are horses....which is awesome:)

My favorite is the opening scene in 300...when it goes into slow motion....

Thank you for that link Hitch, that makes my heart ache when I see Aldaniti with his mouth open feeling for the bit and trying to get some rein. What a beautiful galloping scene, now I must try and find that also. I have to say that I really love the scene in The Return of the Man from Snowy River when the man and woman are on the brumby galloping along the edge of the mountains. I just lose my breath, it is so breathtakingly beautiful. I love that little horse, where can I find one like him in the US?

As well, any of the young Elizabeth Taylor in National Velvet, she looks so happy and unspoiled, she did those riding scenes and they gave her that horse who is a son or grandson of Man O'War, my favorite in that movie though is when the little dog chases the horse and he jumps the big hedge and then goes galloping down the road with his head swinging, WHEE! And, I do really like the scenes of Tatum O'Neal galloping her horse in International Velvet on the beaches of Dover. How can I get to do that!! kind of like! She also did her riding, I have to give her credit, and I always have to laugh at Anthony Hopkins as the coach, hilarious sense of Humah.

I am a rabid, drooling fan of all the LOTR movies - but am compelled to point out that Liv Tyler had a stunt double - she is a self-confessed non-horse person and hated all the scenes where she had to be near or on a horse for the close-ups.

Wow - you're the first person I've known who has seen it! Well worth renting - I liked it mostly because it was historically accurate (the battle) - but anyone who really loves horses would enjoy this movie. The partnership between man and horse - going through the desert with no water, the troops giving the last bits of water to their horses before charging Beersheba... very high drama and a tearjerker (when you think of what cavalry horses went through)

Plus..... how could anyone NOT like Australian movies???? A very young Mel Gibson in Gallipoli - Under the Lighthouse Dancing - Breaker Morant - now THERE was a true horseman (Boer War) Poet, horsebreaker, calvaryman... and martyr. Big thumbs up for Australian cinema.

J Swan! I think you might be the second person I've known who has even heard of The Light Horsemen! I watched that for the first time when I was in Australia.. and I still love it :)

I am a sucker for The Man From Snowy River...the way they tied the poem into the movie is just fantastic.

"When they reached the mountain's summit, even Clancy took a pull—
It well might make the boldest hold their breath;

Read the Full Poem Here (http://plagiarist.com/poetry/?wid=7941)

Makes me misty every time I read it.

[QUOTE=riverbell93;3553361]The race scene in The Quiet Man!!!! I love that crazy race across the beach and over the fields. And then the end, when John Wayne deliberately ignores Maureen O'Hara's hat and snatches the widow's hat instead (must see movie to understand), and Maureen's redheaded fury as all the other riders sweep past and ignore it too...

"I'll do no such shameless thing":)

yep...I also love every draft/cart horse in that movie...esp the black shire that drops Michaleen Flynn off at the bar door...the same one that John Wayne sits on briefly to check the wagering...while not a racing scene there is also the drunk horse in Cat Balou...:)

The funniest galloping scene has to be in "Tiny Town."

It's a Western they made with the Wizard of Oz Munchkin actors. They all ride ponies.

In one scene, the heroine is in a stagecoach being chased by the bad guys being chased by the good guys. If you look closely, at least two of the ponies (the pintos) are in ALL THREE groups!

The same thing happened in an episode of the TV series, "Young Riders." A woman rides off, scene shifts, and an actor runs up to the SAME HORSE and jumps on and rides after her.

Alright, ditto to this whole post. I LOVE the Silver Brumby, have seen that dozens of times, saw it first as a little girl...bought it when I finally found it at amazon.com a few years ago, and its a mainstay. I love that whole freakin' movie. The stallion fight scenes just amaze me, how the heck do you do that? Really, all the liberty work amazed me. Kudos to everyone involved in that film!

And the worst IS the car chase. Makes me break out in a cold sweat just watching it.:(

Ditto to Arwin's flight from the wraiths.

But one of MY favorites is the moment when Black Beauty (Alan Cumming narrating) is talking about being shod, tacked up, etc. and 'I said whoa, but he said go'...then they head towards that field and he starts to FLY. That gorgeous black 'Doc's Keepin' Time'...the old style saddle and english countryside....the horse says something like, 'when I realized that he and i could become one, this business became perfectly glorious!'. And they just take off like rockets, until the horse is a blur.

That movie, btw, is my FAVORITE horse movie. The ending, where the horses are galloping and the frame freezes w/ Ginger, Merrylegs, Beauty all together again in the big pasture, the credits start...god, makes me BALL. And non-horsey people have watched that movie with me and they become blubbery messes too. God. Now I've got to go watch it. Just writing about it makes me feel all sad and nostalgic. What a GREAT movie.

There are lots - but some of my favorites are:

National Velvet - The Race
Man From Snowy River - nuff said
The Quiet Man Race -that part of Ireland has not changed much since the movie

kind of a sappy movie called Galant Bess -WWII movie soldier finds a beautiful black mare on some Pacific Island, nurses her back to health - bonds like a dog. Soldier gets shipped out home - Gallant Bess escapes from her paddock runs to the beach, watches as the marines are headed out to sea and she leaps into the water and swims after him... of course they have to eventually lower the ramp to let the Bess in; and everyone lives happily ever after...

and I think the one of the best, which might not really be "gallop" from Cat Ballou where Lee Marvin and his horse get a little drunk - that scene where they are weaving across the countryside is hilarious...

This is of course only a bit of the poem. A guy from Australia, Slim Dusty has put it to music, and I have had a copy for about 25 years. I think it is sort of an Aussie Paul Bunyan. Slim has lots of horse songs-Leave him in the long yard, Three hundred horses, Saturday in the Saddle, who's riding old Harlequin now? Slim Dusty is sort of an Aussie Willie Nelson. Hope you guys can find these, they are terrific!

The Black Stallion is one of the most beautifully filmed "horse" movies ever, with the beach scenes being tissue worthy.
I really love the shot in National Velvet when Liz Taylor is riding the Pie along side the train carrying Mickey Rooney and he looks out and she waves. Scary that they'd let a star of her caliber ACTUALLY DO that. And her joy as she waves is clearly not acting, it captures what all of us have felt as riders.

Not mentioned are any scenes from Lonely Are The Brave with Kirk Douglas riding an absolutely GORGEOUS flaxen maned Lusitano type horse up a cliff. Well, 2 horses...their manes switch sides depending on if they're being ridden or rearing. ;)

Never heard of this "Champion" movie, but will seek out. Also going to have to find a copy of Man From Snowy River which I've never seen. Thanks!

She did all of her own riding. Maybe that's one of the reason's why the film was so loved.

I beleive that Elizabeth Taylor actually broke her back filming National Velvet. While jumping she fell with the horse she was riding for the film.

She had back trouble for the rest of her life because of it.

Will restrict to those I can watch without bawling, which takes out the best one, Champions.

The so called "Cavalry Trilogy" directed by John Ford starring John Wayne and a supporting cast of great horsemen ranging from (very young) Ben Johnson and Harey Carey Jr to Yakima Canutt (and a skinny Ward Bond) has some of the absolute best high speed work with horses. Fort Apache, Rio Grande (not Rio Bravo) and She Wore a Yellow Ribbon circa early 50s.

My favorite is Rio Grande when Ben Johnson steals a Generals horse and takes a 4'+ corral fence bareback...carrying the saddle. Also some good Roman riding over fences. Don't see that too much anymore. The Quiet Man is the same production team and most of the same cast. Add The Searchers too for alot of gallops against the sky and over rough country.

Chariot race in Ben Hur (Yakima Canutt).

The original National Velvet and the Pie jumping the stone walls.

The Black on the beach.

LOTR, the blacks and the riders of Rohan.

Hidalgo was corny but fun and makes the list.

Lonesome Dove.

And True Grit.

Tombstone is great, forgot that one. You might add the Burt Lancaster, Kirk Douglas version of the same events, Gunfight at OK Corral. They have old Burt on a nice buckskin that gets alot of screentime.

Also forgot Electric Horseman which has been mentioned. Despite it's faults, that is one good chase scene between horse and cops in cars and on motorcycles. The slow motion on the horse when they free him is breathtaking aganist that scenery.

OHHH DAMMIT, I forgot one more I really like. The Big Country. Stagecoach team galloping over the opening credits is good. Outstanding stunt work as (again a very young) Chuck Conners and his brothers harass the dude, Gregory Peck. Charleton Heston has a fancy black overo in that one.

I am noticing something...directors seem to repeat good horse work in their various movies. For example, John Ford in all his westerns. The Big Country was directed by William Wyler-he directed Ben Hur. He also did Friendly Persuasion with an entire sub plot about a fancy looking but slow buggy horse in Quaker society during the civil war. That is a real good movie BTW.

Can't forget old Ma Kettle trying to rein in the ugly Lady saying..."man has no stomach for a gal he can't catch and I got three marriageable daughters".

I'll also add to my previous selections the scene in Phar Lap where he finally learns to put it together and run in a workout.

Also from Phar Lap, though not a galloping scene, is the great scene of him arriving late at the Melbourne Cup, when he was being hidden due to threats and then the van broke down getting him to the track. Stewards were about to declare him out when a HUGE roar went up from the crowd, and here came Phar Lap just off the van in the most gorgeous extended trot with his groom running him down to the paddock to make the race. The whole crowd is cheering him and going nuts - and this is BEFORE the race. I tear up every time watching that scene. Really shows what that horse meant to the fans.
