I recently purchased a preteen OTTB from a women who did not get papers with the mare (so she could not be raced again) and was wanting to breed her to get a Sport horse, but a couple of the stallion owners want her to be registered in my name, " So their stallions get the recognition with the JC"
My question is it in bad taste to try to find out who the last registered owner was and to see if I could get them to sign the papers over to me. I would make sure they understand it would be only because I want to breed her not race ( mare is 11yrs old chips in both fetlocks, but sound) or should I just looK for other stallions that don't require that she be registered?

In many jurisdictions a horse who has not won each year starting at 10 is ineligible to race - if that is true where you are, it might help convince the previous owner to release her papers.
All the best,

Thank you, will have to check, since she last raced on the East Coast back in 2002 and now lives in ND. This info may help.

What is the mare's name? A client of mine sold a horse to a girl in ND back in 02 or 03. Might be the same? Sarah

The girl I bought her from was from West Virginia and her husband got stationed up in Minot at the Air Force base, she brought her out just this year, she had her for the last 6 yrs and did eventing with her.
Her JC name is Cisne, I do have a copy of her foal registration which was issued to G.W Pitzer out of Kentucky. I also have a copy of her race record which shows that she raced at a track with the initials R.D. and Hoosier. I have looked up her bloodline and it is full of winners, but because I am not a member of the JC I could not see who the last person to have her registerd was, like I said I do not want to race her, I just want to breed her in about 2 or 3 yrs.

All you have to do is call equineline and for a small charge they will give you all the info you need. If the horse was at a track originally the papers are probably still at the gate or with the trainer, this happens quite often even though they should have left with the horse. You will need the papers to officially transfer and will need the last owners signature. You do not have to be a jockey club member to find out this info. I have a membership and will try to look her up for you.
also, remember for the foal to be jockey club registered you will have to breed straight, no AI!

I don't think that most former owners would mind being contacted for this. Whether they can find the papers is another matter - IMO, most race folks are not the best record keepers (including myself here, although I do try!). Good luck!

Thank you to all that are helping. Found out from the girl that I bought her from that teh owner gave her the horse w/o papers because he didn't want her raced anymore, ok understandable. Now after all these years if I tell him/her that I will pay for a copy of the papers (that's if he doesn't have them) would it be fair for me to ask him/her to sign them? Also, I've heard of some old owners asking for payment of the papers, other wise they won't sign them over.

This would not be unheard of nor uncommon. If a horse is given to a trainer to find a home for, it is expected the horse's profitability is nil. If you want the papers, the horse then has value again and the owners of record may indeed want compensation for the registration portion and release of breed registry ownership. As you want the foal papered, there is profitability there, even if you are keeping the foal for now or forever, the registered offspring has potential value.

Well, I ordered her last 5 race report and found out her old owners name Shelly Radosevich and the trainer was Jake Radosevich. Looked her up on the white pages if it is her could be based out of OH. Anybody maybe know her or her husband (trainer)?

Call the tracks in Ohio and see if they have stalls there. That is how we found the old owners of one of our broodmares. The people where grateful that she found a good home. Evidently they sold to someone with the intention of a good home and she ended up at a auction where we got her. Would not trade her for anything. She just had her first foal this year and she is a dandy.

Showpony--- Thank you for the suggestion about the tracks, nailed it on the first track, they currently do not have any horses there, but do most of the time. The Stall Manager said that he would contact them and give them my number. I am one step closer. Wish me and Sidney (Cisne) luck!!!!:D

I have met the Radosevich family once or twice passing through Ohio. Very nice people. I don't see them as the type to not help you. I think they'd gladly at least sign for you to get the papers. Following is an ad on Canter Ohio & has his #.
Grand Council - this 7 year old chestnut gelding stands 16hh and is sound for flat work. Very quiet. Asking $1000. Jake Radosevich 614-216-6040. Stabled near Beulah Park.

GOOD NEWS!!!!!! I talked Shelly and Jake, very nice people. They are willing to sign the papers over, small snag, they don't have them. I just read on equineline/JC that a transfer of ownership may be done online and would be free. Was I reading this wrong? If not how do I get to that part? SO close, just a small snag. lol:lol:
Again I would like to thank all of you who have helped me on this, if you are ever up in ND around Bismarck PM me and I'll take you out for coffee.

but a couple of the stallion owners want her to be registered in my name, " So their stallions get the recognition with the JC"
The above quote makes no sense. If they are TB stallions, they fill out a Report of Mares bred and your mare is either on it or she's not. It has nothing to do with who is the registered owner. The JC will send the registration packet to the address listed on the Stallion Service Certificate.
If they are not TBs, the JC could give a rat's behind about them and they will never get recognition anyway.
The solution to your problem is to have the old owner request a duplicate set of papers and then sign them over to you. Simple but it costs money.
Transfer of ownership is always free with the JC, but I believe the online access is limited to those who own a horse currently in the JC system. A transfer of ownership can be done via mail if you can and request the form.
However, contrary to popular belief, the JC does not track ownership. They are a registry and that is all. Which is why they will not give out ownership information.

The ownership/transfer papers are on the way!! Not as hard as I thought it would be! The nice guy at the JC told me just to request a Transfer of Ownership form and have old owners(last one to have her registered) make out a bill of sale, just in case, they are nice and said that they would. That's it, was so worried. Will update when I get teh papers.

Sleepyfox- The reason they want the horse in my name is because they have been burned in the past by one lady who was leasing a horse and bred her w/o permission, actual owners had foal aborted. They are just being careful.
