I heard that the trick rider fell off Friday night and didn't get back on - is that true? Was he trying to do a trick.
Maybe that is why he didn't do any trick riding on Sat. - during the day and evening performance?

I am definitely curious as well. I wasn't sure what was going on since he didn't do any tricks!

LOL it was pretty bad. He was standing on two horses jumped over a little 18 inch jump and fell off. Jumped back on and rode out of the ring.
On Saturday night he sat on one horse and "drove" the two others around the Dixon twice and left.
There were no tricks Friday or Saturday! It was very awkward and strange!

Not to hijack- I was standing next to the jump when he came off- it was a little bigger than 18" but not much...Brian told the crowd that if they applauded, he'd try the jump again...uh, no...
I always enjoyed the Sabines' programs. They were fun, and theatical- a nice break. Now, the dancer did nothing for me, but until that time, they were fun. The year that Brian went out to do battle, riding Sydney, was a stitch.
"Death march of the llamas"- the drill team with people leading their llamas- left me cold, and the minis were insane. Those little buggers can leap through the air- dragging their owners and all- quite an accomplishment!

Well given the torrential rains we had and the footing conditions - I think that was also a factor.
Let's be kind people - it always sounds so "snobby" when anything but dressage is presented as an exhibition. Keep in mind the dressage discipline is a very small one in the U.S. horse industry.
And if any of you have other suggestions for people who want to come and entertain there - I'm sure the show committee would appreciate it.

I was sitting in the judges booth at B with Jessica Ransehausen when the trick rider fell off (we thought he was going to jump right into the booth!!). And no, at that point (Friday night) footing was not an issue. It was only misting, though heavily at times, but the footing was quite good and none of the horses were having issues. The demonstration was just plain bad, IMHO. The horses could not have been tied down and together with more stuff and it just wasn't something that I found fun, pretty, exciting or anything to watch. I don't think it has anything to do with being snobby - I love a good demo of any form of riding that is well executed with happy, well trained horses. This wasn't it.

The issue was that, since he uses quite a bit of sticky stuff on the bottoms of his boots to help him stay on, when he fell, the sand adhered to his boots and it would have been unsafe for him to try again.
There are always reasons for what goes on. I'm already working on the exhibitions for 2009. Hopefully you'll all enjoy them.

Just wondering - was he supposed to do any "trick riding"? I was just very confused about what he was supposed to be doing - when I think of a trick rider I think of someone doing tricks on the back of the horse/or on the ground?
I always like to see Sabine - it seems like she comes every other year? But I hope she leaves the dancer behind - just my opinion.
The Fresian drill team done about 5 years ago was very good (lit up in rope lights).

Austin's business is called "Texas Trick Riders". He was supposed to do the long line driving the two horses in front of the horse he was riding and was to do Roman riding. It would have been a little difficult to do real trick riding with the dressage arena set up.
Austin stepped in when the original act had to cancel. Considering the short notice and the weather, I think he did an admirable job.

For the record: His horses shied to the left after they jumped their jump on the rail when several spectators on the rail ahead of them leaped up with cameras. They they shied to the right when they nearly hit the judge's booth at B. He stayed on for the first spook but slid off onto his feet to the left on the second. And it was very soggy and "misting" heavily.

Has DAD ever had a Vaulting exhibition? It is really exciting and very impressive.
The crowds at Equine Affaire always love it.
My son (now off at college) was a vaulter for many years. I remember when
he was 8 years old and learning to stand at canter while I was desperately
trying to learn to sit the trot!

I think vaulting would be very interesting.....I liked the year they had the knights (I think it was 2 years ago)
and I think a driving exhibition would be fun......

They had a driving exhibition a few years ago and it was fantastic. I also absolutely LOVED the rennaisance demo. They did riding one horse and driving 2 others that was excellent. I've seen much better Roman riding, but at least he tried on short notice.

Just wanted to add my support for LoriK and others who work so hard to put that show on. You can never please everyone!
I really enjoyed Lendon Grey's pony presentation. I think it would be great to have more demos like that showcasing of all the different types/breeds that can and do compete and train in dressage. Let's face it, the average adult ammie is not riding a uber fancy, talented warmblood. We ride TBs, drafts/crosses, morgans, QH, arabs, etc.
I will even volunteer to bring my big percheron dressage horse! She's quite the show stopper! ;)

Oh NO!!! Please no medieval Renaissance crap pleaseeeeeee!!!!! Legit displays of accomplished riders/demos is definitely my pick. The crowd is very educated and appreciates good riders.

I was there for the Saturday night performance. SNORE!
The highlight (besides the competition) was the ring crew. The guy in the blue sequin dress had niiiiiice leeeegs..... :)
I loved Lendon's pony demo - and CURSE HER! I've been looking for a nice dressage pony ever since. :)

My pony stallion Popeye was one of the ponies in the demo! We were so thrilled to see this many dressage ponies with riders of all ages show the crowd that ponies ARE suitable for all ages of riders.

Popeye is adorable! What a great little guy and I hope to catch one of his rides next weekend at GAIG.
