Just saw that in Middleburg's results... riders finished, but had RT also next to their name? This may have been asked but I couldn't find anything...

Isn't it usually just "R"?

Since you said "riders", plural, was this beside several? I just went to Greenwood this weekend and retired was still just an R on the scoreboard. What I had to ask about was- RF next to someone I know. Unfortunately, that was "rider fall".

I heard of several prelim riders who missed a set of mandatory flags...but I don't think that's it.

It appears from looking at the results page that it would be "retired" as the people who have it had 60 to 80 xco jump penalties and no time penalties listed so they would not have finished the course. Usually it is just an "R" but maybe this event decided to us "RT" ?

RT is the OFFICIAL designation used by the FEI in international events, as far as I know, so it's not surprising to find it used domestically.

I was the scorer so let me expalin
1) RT is the offical terminoligy for retired. I don't like R since it is used in marking XC master score sheets for refusal and since we are keeping electronic information for the association I don't want any confusion
2) The association has announced a new way to post scores and send them in. I think everyone will be confused as several of you are already. They want jump faults to date under XC jump and the RT or E or TE or MR to show up as a final score. That is what you are seeing. Thus a person who has 2 refuals at a jump and then retires will have 60 XC jump and RT as final score.
WHY are they doing this? It is so more accurate records can be kept. Suppose a horse has 3 refusals on a course then misses a jump for a TE. IT will show as 60 or 80 with a final score of TE. That is a lot different than missing a MF where you will see 0 jump and a TE final score. As a purchaser of a horse wouldn't you want to know this difference? Similarly, what if a horse lost a shoe and then retires. Again that is a big difference than retiring after 60 XC jump penalties
I had to rewrite all my porgramming to follow the new rules and it was not trivial.

Thank you for explaining that - and I like the new clarifications. Sorry you had to do so much re-programming though.

Thanks steve, great explanation! Sorry you had all that work but it does seem like a much better method of reporting and tracking.

Thanks, Steves.
So, Mighty Guru, doesn't that mean that this old hag, who missed a fence on XC last weekend (yes, I went happily from 12 to 14 without even noticing. Had to be told by the TD after the finish!!) should have gotten a TE instead of an E? I'd prefer a TE, since it insinuates that the rider is a fool, which I prefer to the horse being labeled as such!

Sounds like a TE to me.

Scores are posted at http://www.middleburgorangecounty.ponyclub.org/mht/mht08results.htm
Regarding the missed Fence 13, I remember that and I thought it I had put it in as TE. Please email me your name/number and I will double check the sheets. This could have been a transcription error
