View Full Version : Who's doing the Waredaca T3DE?

Okay, as an alum of the Waredaca T3DE, I feel obligated to get the party started!
So who's going?
Who's going to enter?
I hear there's spots left.
My instructor is taking a greenie. What an excellent way to teach a horse about a full 3 day. Don't you think? And she's got a student going.
Gosh, I'm even contemplating entering again. I had such a good time there and I'm sure I didn't get all the info in my wee brain in the first time.

Ooooh, I think you should enter again! And tell us all about it!!

I wish that more of the event were on the weekend, it would be easier to volunteer for us working monkeys. As it stands, I think I'm going to sign up to help out on Sat. Oct. 25. Am overdue to volunteer this year.

OH.. me me me! I am ridiculously excited!!
I've run Prelim but never done a 3 day. I got this awesome little horse last December and we have both eased back into competing. The T3DE was our goal for this year!
My entry is in the mail, work has been notified, I am stock piling extra buckets, and Hubby and Dad are in for the trip!
I am also fortunate enough to spend 5 days at my trainers house before hand to put on the finishing touches!! All seems to be in place...
Would absolutly love to hear advice, do's, don'ts, and personal experiences!
For those of us with nerves, are they better or worse in the 10 min box?

Yay for all competitors. I just signed up to volunteer wherever they need me on the 25th. Rock on riders!

I think one thing that riders might want to know is that the dressage is in the large ring -- that does make a difference, I think, as to how you ride your circles and transitions.
A little birdie told me Jim Wofford will be there Thursday to do a course walk!

Yeah, I saw that the dressage will be held in a large arena. I'll have to practice that one, its a little strange to stretch Training B to fit the longer ring.
MY COUNTDOWN TO THE T3DE HAS BEGUN!
keep tips and advice coming please

There are great cheeseburgers at the gas station at the intersection of 97 & 650 (that's Georgia Ave. & Damascus Rd.) just about 1 mile from Waredaca. Send someone to get you one (or three) during the day.
Don't forget to BREATHE!

I found that I was less nervous in the 10 minute box. I was a bit nervous right before starting Steeplechase, but event hat wasn't bad 'cause there's so much to do and think about (stirrup length, check girth, check brakes, check watch, etc.) Then phase C sort of lets you feel all giddy after the steeplechase, and you can slowly calm down as you trot.
By the time you get to the 10 minute box, you are so well prepared, and you feel your horse acting so pumped up and impressed with him/herself, that you know you will rock!
Have a great time!!!

Here is my tip- do everything you can in terms of preparation beforehand as I overestimated how much free time I would have while there. The clinics, educational stuff, walking Phases A and B to learn them, getting my D box stuff set up, horsecare, etc ate up almost all of my time and I ended up in a crunch for things like cleaning tack that I had figured I would do in my downtime- I found out there is no downtime!! :)
Have fun- it is a blast!!!

I am new to all of this- we only just started competing a year ago- any help much appreciated! This is probably a dumb question, but how do you ride the dressage test in a std. arena when it's designed for a small one? Do you base things by the letters like you would in the smaller arena (like say 20m circle at A tops out at X) and therefore, a 20m circle isn't really doing to be a 20m circle? And is the large arena at Waredaca grass or sand?
As for Day 2- endurance- as one of my biggest fears on xc is forgetting the course for one reason or another...I really don't know why, I walk them about 3x- how are phases A and C? Long, easy to lose your way at all? And I will probably only have about one person able to help on that day- will that work for the 10min box in anyone's experience? Any necessity recommendations for what to bring to it? {Oh and btw, is there a ditch and wall/brush on course?}
It's a month away and I'm getting myself nervous already, I'm good at that. I'm very excited though- it sounds like so much fun!

Can't help with the dressage in the long arena, and I have not actually competed, but I did volunteer and groom for the T3D (as well as board at Waredaca, so I've seen a decent bit of it) so I will chime in with what I do recall.
For A and C, they let you hack out on them the days before, so you can get familiar with where to go (I think they migh even encourage it). In the past, they have broken up the competitors into groups and had various BNR take you on course walks for XC and help you with the chase. I also believe they have set aside a steeplechase jump so people could practice jumping that beforehand as well.
The more the better in the 10 min box, IMHO (i.e. if you can have 2 or 3 it's that much easier- one or two for the horse and one for the rider). But, at least having one person is good. Usually there are extra people in the box to lend a hand, so let people know ahead of time if you only have one person in case someone can just be stationed with you (like me, I will most likely be over there to lend a hand if I can escape work :)).
I don't believe I have ever seen a ditch and wall jump on any of our courses, but definitely don't take my word for it :).
Thought I would add the link to the T3D tips page on Waredaca's site over on this thread:

I'll be the veterinarian again this year! I can't wait. Hopefully it won't be as wet as last year! I'll be going to give a talk about the 10 minute box from my duties Thurs pm at dinner, and the biggest advice I have is to relax and have fun!! It's over in a blink and then you are out on XC. I get so excited watching everyone on steeplechase, it's so cool!
Everyone associated with the T3D is helpful and nice, so if any time during the event you have any questions or concerns, just ask us! I'm usually in stabling or watching, and there's always someone running around. Firefox is the BEST stable manager ever!
You'll have a blast, learn a lot, and there is a lot of cameraderie between all of the competitors. Look forward to it, I know I am!!
Planning for 2010 with Tex (I hope!).

I'm going to be the starter on endurance day!
try to read prep on t3d rules/advice ahead of time - check the website.
colliemom is right!
I think we weren't allowed to use whips in dressage too.

See you all there! Rode last year but have volunteered in the past. Had a total blast on steeplechase in the pouring rain. ( well it rained the whole weekend until about 11:30 on Sunday :- ). By the time you get to the ten minute box. you will be smiling so hard, your face will hurt ... because you just came of the most thrilling ride on steeplechase.. and you'll still be flying high! It was the lst and only time ever competing ( in more than almost 20 years of competing.. I was not one bit nervous before going out on cross country. I was so pumped up from A/B for sure and C... Have a great time!

That's an amazing quote. Wow. That alone says it ALL from the educational standpoint! What better advertisement for the philosophy of the training level three-day event?
Well, I did ok yesterday at Flora Lea so I have one more qualifying result! I will not get there this year, but I am really hoping perhaps next year, if the stars align, I still have a sound horse and the crick don't rise. Holly

I'll be there volunteering again this year...we were hoping to compete, but it's been one thing after another. The A plan was to have the 20yo ready to go for the T3D this year...but that was sidelined by a suspensory tear in March. The B plan was to get the back-up monster TB ready but between getting to know each other and some hoof/leg/miscelaneous soundess issues, that got sidetracked too. So now onto the C plan - volunteering for the T3D and riding Monster TB (he's 18h...thus the monster part) Training at the regular HT.
On the positive side, the 20yo is back in work, and just started jumping little gymnastics...and we're getting a handle on the Monster TB's hoof issues...so the new goal for 2009 is to have both of them ready for the T3D so when it comes to entering, I can take my pick...or take them both

For the ?s about the course and dressage:
If you look at the drawings of the small and large ring in the omnibus, you will see that the letters are all in the same relationship to each other, but with additional letters inserted in between. Read your test again (I know you know it, but read it again, while looking at the diagram): so, for example, if it says 20 m circle at A, do that. It does NOT say "20 m circle at A, top point at X" -- we know the top point is at X in a small arena, but now the top point is wherever it is based on the large arena drawing (don't have it in front of me). It's STILL a 20 m circle at A, just as it says.
Make sense?
The only movements that are "longer" or "bigger" are anything all the way down the long side, and your diagonals. Oh, and center line, of course. All your circles are to be ridden the size it says.
In the past, no ditch and wall, but we often have a fairly narrow brush fence that can be tricky, and we have a Training trakhener (not a big one, not downhill approach -- I think much nicer than the one at Loch Moy, and I am a trakhenerphobe) that I imagine will be on the course.
As for the 10 minute box and phases A and B, read this: http://www.waredaca.com/competitions/2006/t3daytips.shtml
Also, see the other thread about grooming for the "LF" (long format) -- lots of tips and links there.

For those with the ditch and wall question. We (Waredaca) do have one! Not ever used on the T courses though. It is a portable thing that attaches to the back end of any of the ditches. I think it only made appearances at Prelim and Inter a while ago and the last I saw it, it was on its side in the woods being held hostage by vines.

oh, THAT ditch and wall -- I hate that thing, but you are right, it's only ever been used at prelim. I think the "wall" is too big and nasty for Training. i hope. :D
Also, usually they use the lower outdoor arena for dressage -- this is a flat sand ring. It is near the dreaded white dogs, but if I were you , and I were worried about that, I'd use time the night before, when you arrive, to go hack over there around the dogs. They'll come out and bark and you can get that over with.

Folks :0)
We need entries for the Half Star! The closing date is Tuesday - Oct. 7 - and we really need anyone who is interested to enter as soon as possible....this year, I hear the sponsorship stuff if better than ever! There are loads of stuff coming in... and Jim Wofford is scheduled to be giving the keynote address as awell as a XC course walk if time permits.
The last year he gave the walk, let me tell you, it was worth about year's worth of clinics just to hear the educational tips and advice he gave for each fence and question. It was awesome. And don't forget it's all free to volunteers too. Please urge anyone you know with a qualified training level horse - junior, amateur, pro -- it's open to all -- to enter. They will not regret it.

bummer...hope that the entries pick up. Unfortunately, while I plan to be running training at the HT...my girl would not be fit enough for the half star after her year off (and I don't want to risk re-injury).

i went last year in the muck and the mud. I went with two others. The achievement of the three day was phenominal. The horse I was riding at the time and myself had a ditch problem. I was thrilled when I won Weave A Dream, qualifying me for the three day. I will never forget cross country day. The feeling of making it cleana over the half coffin and trakehner was nearly enough to make me cry. On the horse that had gotten eliminated at a trakehner earlier in the season, and smashing all confidence I had ever had, going clean at the three day(well besides time) in the pouring down monsoon....was just awesome. I could not describe the feeling anywhere else. I made some friends at the three day and continue to talk to some of them(hey retread!) The three day is just phenominal. Its a great learning experience and a heck of a test. The educational discussions and the dinners were great as well. If any of you are qualified and are contemplating going, go! Waredaca will make it worth your while!:)

I'm in the same boat as many others... lame T horse so won't make it this year. And the other T horse I'm riding will be competing in the Area II N Champs during the weekend show.
But I second all comments on how great it is! So if you are even thinking about doing and am not sure... sign up! Its a blast!!!!

At my first CCI* I was most nervous for A and C... yes, that's right. My horse when he's fit is very explosive and A and C went directly beside the chase track in Kentucky, so horses were galloping past us at an extremely fast rate. My BO's figured if I got eliminated anywhere it would be for getting bucked off on A. lol. Thankfully he wasn't too bad. Threw in a few mild bucks and was quite reved up for C after chasing, but I stayed on! The D box was great. You're preparred to go, confident after getting your eye and having fun on chase and just ready to tackle your course.
Have fun :)

does anybody know if this event follows FEI drug rules (since it is modeled after the */LF) or if it is just USEA HT drug rules? Am waiting to put a call in to the organizer but thought maybe someone on here would know!!
