UPDATE: I took the puppy home and he is now in CHAPEL HILL, NC but he can't stay. He stills needs a home desperately!!! Going to the vet today - will post another update.

I know this is a long stretch, but a friend of mine found a puppy laying in her bushes. He looks as though he may have mange, but is a really sweet boy. Very hungry and tired. Just needs some love. He is now located in CHAPEL HILL, NC

These pictures will break your heart.

Ack! Poor little guy. I don't see any labrador, but I bet he'd be cute after he's gotten clean and healthy!

Where is this puppy?

If his ears were up straight, he would look identical to a dog we found. The vet said Cooper is an Australian Cattle Dog mix (I thought they were all blue merle...). He is somewhat hyper but a very, very, VERY naturally obedient dog. We figure he is about 2 years old. I've had lots of Border Collies and I hate to say it, but he is a lot smarter than they were.
He does tend to chase birds that are flying . I just hope he avoids running smack into a tree. Always has to have something in his mouth, too. Stick, bone, plastic coke bottle, whatever.
Hope he finds a good home. Cooper is a wonderful, loyal dog.

Has she taken him to the vet- he could very well have HW or parvo if he is a stray- she really should take him to find out, or if she doesn't have the means to do that then get him to animal rescue. I hope for the best for him.

if she has any other animals they are at risk. he can't have HW as he's too young. pups are not tested for HW it takes months to develop however it looks like sarcopic mange and it is HIGHLY contagious! many shelters put dogs down with it. i remember 2 cute lab pups at a local shelter who had a tad on their heads years ago and they were not going to be adopted. it's very very contagious. i'd bleach all over my yard where he was and although yes i feel bad for the little guy, i never would have taken him on my property with my dogs.

Hold up, way too reactive about the possibility of mange. Most if not all of it is very easily treated, at this young age the puppy will likely be perfectly fine. I can give the OP advice but it would not be to put down a perfectly healthy puppy (other than the mange). Build up the immune system, careful deworming and the puppy may be able to deal with it him/her self. I have done alot of rescues and am certainly not afraid for my three dogs, it is easy to keep them separated until the lesions start to heal. I even concocted my own recipe for sarcoptic mange, which is an anti-mite powder (for chickens) combined with petroleum jelly and smeared it on and they healed. However, now there is a wonderful product called Neem Oil which has been used for both kinds with a great deal of success. Like I said though this puppy is so young and just in building the baby up, much can be achieved. Feel free to email me if you need some suggestions. Not advisable to vaccinate the puppy until these lesions do heal though, too hard on the system and will not be effective to build immunity unless there is an upward trend in the health.

How is the puppy now? What did the vet say? I'm in Chapel Hill and I live in a dorm so I can't take him... otherwise I totally would. Thanks for trying to help this guy. I'll cross-post this and let you know if there is any interest.

As already has been said manage/lice is easily treated in puppies and dogs. A littlle difficult in collies or dogs that you think may have collie in them since they cannot have ivermectin but other dogs can, combine that with a lime sufler rinse and the pup will be good as new.

As for parvo, yes the puppy could have that but if the other dogs are vaccinated they should be fine he could also be a carrier. But you put your animals at risk any time you take them around other dogs since the virus is shed through the intestinal track. Even if someone steps in dog doo from an infected dog and walks into your yard your dogs could be at risk. Symptoms are high fever, lethargy, depression, and loss of appetite. Secondary symptoms appear as severe gastrointestinal distress, such as vomiting and bloody diarrhea. In many cases, dehydration, shock, and death follow (if not treated and supportive care given). It can take 7-10 days for an exposed dog/puppy to show signs.

Also keep in mind that a bad case of internal parasites - round worms. Can cause some of the same symptoms and that is something that is very common in puppies and kittens.

Regardless the little guy should see a vet either via your friend or as someone else already said by turning him over to a shelter or animal rescue for adoption. They probably won't adopt him out till the skin condition is cleared up. We got a puppy last year and she had ring worm when she was picked up and taken to the shelter. They would not allow us to adopt her till the ring worm was cleared up.

Glad to hear you're taking him to the vet.

I tried to talk hubby into just one more dog but he said no...

We currently have 11 dogs and the inn is full.
If only I could win the lottery.

sarcopic mange is not a fungus it's caused by a mite. it can also be demodectic manage which is not itchy and not contagious. either can be on the face and head. i didn't say to put the puppy down, i said it is HIGHLY contagious and the person who has him should be very careful with any other pets. http://marvistavet.com/html/sarcoptic_mange.html

I was not inferring that sarcoptic mange was a fungus, and I was discussing the wrong treatment, I used a mite dust for poulty, the other was for rainrot in horses, wasn't thinking clearly when I wrote what powder I used. It most certainly worked. It is contagious but then again so is just about everything else the puppy may or may not have. You just were suggesting bleaching the yard, etc. which will also not rid your property of either fungus or lice unless you scorch the whole ground, and all of the bedding. Just seemed a little overreactive for what could be a very simple case of mange. Very glad you are taking puppy to the vet, just do not let them vaccinate, I have known at least one puppy killed by overwhelming the system, that one was nearly bald from mange. I was floored when the rescuer told me that the vet vaccinated the puppy the same day as she was told to give the puppy a Paramite bath and repeat in just a few days.

a friend of mine found a dead mangey fox on her farm. her dogs are house dogs. it's unlikely they killed it, but it was there. her dogs all ended up with mange from the fox so it's hair and mites etc must have been on the brush on the property. they all were together when they found it. it was shoveled away.

i don't know if bleach is the answer but i do know it's not to be taken lightly and i would certainly find out what the premises can be sprayed with.

Ok, vet said he is probably 4 to 5 months. He did a skin scrape and he does not have mange. Possibly a fungal or bacterial thing. He got a nice bath in some fungal shampoo and is thoroughly enjoying himself.

that is great news, but it is not always easy to diagnose. one skin scrape may not be enough. please google sarcopic mange and sometimes we have to ask the vets for more. you'll know if it's fungal, it'll clear up with what he gave you. wish him luck.
