I've been thinking (yep, it was me you smelled burning!) that this sort of thing might really work to help find riding buddies. Similar to the horseless riders thread. If you like going to greenways/trails/schooling somewhere, but you either don't want to ride alone, or you don't have transportation, you can find somebody in your area, pitch in some gas money, etc. Also a fun way to meet COTHers in your area! What do you guys think?
Updated to add Andy's awesome map:D

I'm all for it, especially since I'm currently w/out a rig. So many great places around me to trail ride, and I've hardly started!
ETA: Gainesville (actually Micanopy) FL, happy to trail ride or do cross country schooling or gallop sets.

TBKate, same here. I would love to take my OTTB out somewhere and really work on galloping/conditioning, as there's not really anywhere to ride where I board, I just don't have a rig. And I have friends who can give me rides, but not always. Should we put our locations in the subject line, so it's easier to spot?
I'll start I guess. I'm a teenaged girl with a OTTB gelding, I would need to be picked up, but I can help with driving and gas money. Trail riding is fun, but I'd also like to go somewhere where we can do canter sets/gallops/field work. Cross country schooling is a plus, too!

This is a great idea. It would work the best if there was an interactive map we could all use. We could add our location, username, and interests. It would make it easier to zero in on people in your area. Does google maps have this kind of functionality?

LSM1212, I have (actually DH has) the Towing Beast, and the Beastly stock trailer, just no beast to put in it. So I guess what I am saying is I am horseless in North Central KY, Scott County, have all my own English tack, adequate intermediate re-rider, will ride Western and gaited, could possibly transport (but I am not kidding about beastly stock trailer, it is Fugly and old but all the running gear and floor were recently redone). Do work early 3rd shift and have odd days off.

A friend of mine and I are participating in a fundraiser trail ride on Sunday, October 26. It's a benefit for Indiana Horse Rescue and it will take place at Tippecanoe State Park in Winamac. We did it last year and had a lot of fun - friendly folks, nice trails and all for a good cause. Here's a link to the flyer: http://www.indianahorserescue.com/PDF%20Files/RidetotheRescue(2).pdf

not joining in as in uk and a bit far to run but
this type f thing does work- in some place morso than others but
there will be more horses/ponies and people than trialers and trucks available
so what you need to be is a tad organised so no one misses out on the fun stuff
as someone mentioned a geological map--
1-- find out local transporters in area-- and pitch a route so all get picked up
and ride-and all share cost use smae transporter to change the venue of the ride
so one week you ride at person A-- then the next person b etc etc
2-- ask your barn owners for hire of ther trucks - trialers if available they do hold and shuld operates licences of transportation they too need to make money and if moneys tight it another way they earn a little extra toward ones yard
always ask your barn owner if to meet at there yard--
4-always check if more than one vechilce going to a park, or open spaces that you ride across that arnt yours personally you have the owners permission
also if using transportation--that are properly licnesed those people have to wait for your return so make sure that those people have access to a cafe and loo

Lovettsville, VA (we ride in NVA and MD, sometimes PA)
Two horse BP trailer (Extra W/L/T). Two gaited horses (geldings), pretty bomb proof, one more of a leader and the other more of a follower. We often use our leader to take out friend's greenies for the first time on trail. He's a saint.
We tend to like to ride 2-3 hours. The boys are big, fast walkers, so we ride best with horses with fast walks (gaited, Arabs, TBs, etc.), but am willing to ride with anyone if the scenary is good! We'd really like to try riding Gettysburg this fall...

your right in the Norfolk hunt territory. some friends and I are planning to head up there to ride in the near future. We are about 1hr 45min away:(. The steeplechase course is quite nice. Do you jump? But if your interested in heading down this way there is LOTS of open fields and very nice state forests to ride in. Great footing.
Hey, LookinSouth, if you do end up going to the Norfolk Hunt, give me a shout! My boy is stabled about a 10 minute walk from there, and we're always looking for people to ride out with :) Sadly we're not jumping anymore, but it's still nice to be able to go for a hack in the fields.
And for the map, I'm located in Medfield, MA. I don't have a truck or trailer, so I'm a bit useless in that department, but I'd be willing to pitch in for gas and I'm also within hacking distance of the Norfolk hunt grounds. I've got an aging TB (although he would disagree!) who is generally very good on the trails, although he has his spooky moments.

I have a truck and trailer, though it'll be a few weeks before the truck is fixed. I'm happy to come pick people up provided your horse plays well with others in the trailer (undivided stock), or meet up. I mainly do trail riding, and some favorite riding spots are Masterson Station Park and Shaker Village.
You are near me! I think that my horse plays well with others, I have never had him in an undivided stock trailer before. He has always been fine in slants with others. I only moved here (Lexington) in May and have not been able to get off the farm and explore some of the good trail riding areas. If you are ever up for a ride, let me know!

I just checked a box that said, "allow anyone to edit this map"

Andy825, I think I'd take away the "anyone can edit" option. It allows you to change the name of the map and really screw stuff up, but not to add yourself as a pin as far as I can tell.
I'm on the southwest side of Georgetown, KY (just north of Lexington) and would be up for meeting folks at Masterson. I event and have a green bean who needs to get out as much as possible. Thanks for putting this together :)

It really is so nice to be able to just ride over! It can be surprisingly hard to get people to ride over with me though, so I end up going alone a lot. I haven't ever hunted with them, but one of the women who boards her horses with me goes hunting all the time.

Great idea!
I'm in Wildomar, CA. I don't have a trailer and only one horse. I'm just looking for a trail buddy. There are lots of beautiful trails only a few minutes' drive from my barn up in La Cresta and the Santa Rosa Ecological Preserve.
My horse is a spoiled brat and herd bound, so if we go with anyone it'll have to be a steady eddy type. Want to do fairly regular conditioning rides for dressage and low-level eventing, so like once every week or two, but at this point I'll take just about anything because I'm so bored with our arena! I'm happy to pitch in gas money, of course!
ETA: I was going to add myself to the map, but can't figure out how to do it. so...? :)

Have 2 heese available - HRH Avery is a total trailmaster BUT is walk-only at age 23; Cassidy is young, hot, green, prone to meltdowns, needs a babysitter, & we haven't done enough work outdoors to know if he has a spook yet. Horse stabled in Poolesville, MD (Montgomery County), we ride out 1-2x a week, for 1-2 hours normally. Some shallow water crossings, mix of fields and woods. Horse (Appy, see pic in profile) is a better follower than leader. W,T,C with lovely trail access (parks, owners permission, etc). No trailer.
Would gladly host anyone for a ride on a weekend or a pre-planned weekday. Visitors must sign barn release form.

Saratoga Springs, NY 12866. I'm within a few miles of the track. I have some trails and a couple fields, but I'm sure there are better trails within 15-20 mins. -- I just haven't had the chance to explore much, or anyone to explore with! Have the truck to tow a 2-3 horse BP trailer, just not a trailer yet, although I can sometimes borrow one from a friend. Happy to do whatever -- a walk/trot type ride, or a trot/canter/gallop/jumping kind. Whatever! I'm easygoing. Just happy to be out and about.

Happy Hacking!
Little Valkyrie, we're kinda close. Do you ever do hunter paces or anything of the like? I'm always looking for someone to join me and make a team! have trailer AND extra horse!! i'm game for any riding, cross country, trails, hunter pace, schooling shows, etc
Painted, I'm in the Elgin-Lugoff area. I had been going to the schooling shows at Marston Plantation in Sumter until my little competition mare decided to develop a mysterious almost-lameness that I'm still trying to figure out and rectify. We're close enough for a horsey hook-up, though it might take some jiggering for me to take my older gal out (little bay mare does NOT do well left home alone!).
What sort of trainer are you looking for? Depending on your discipline, perhaps I can help.
To the point of the OP: I have 2-horse that can be slant or straight load, but need to stay local as old truck has started to become cantankerous on longer trips. (Of course, it behaves for the mechanic ... old truck may go to that great garage in the sky if it doesn't get its act together!)

She had only been out with one of her barn buddies, until this weekend. We went to a trail ride with approx. 30 horses, and she was great! A little looky, but took most of it in stride. Now that I know she is OK with strange horses, I will list that I am between exits 192, and 199 of Interstate 80, near the Bald Eagle and Tiadaghton State Forests. Sproul SF is nearby as well. Over 70,000 acres of land, including 120 miles of marked multi-purpose trails (hiking, mt.biking & Equestrian)Lots of great Mt. riding, some flatter areas as well :D

Two horses, no trailer, access to manymany miles of dirt roads and powerlines and hunting preserves in East Central GA, just about 100 miles from both Atlanta and Augusta. In contention for Queen of the White Trash Trail Riders. Worst collection of mismatched tack you ever saw. Have carry permit in case something or someone needs shot, but stopped packing heat after falling off horse and landing on revolver the first time I took the gun on a ride.
Horses, thank the good Lord, are dog broke, road safe, and not too afeard of RRtrains.
We're located halfway between Milledgeville and Sparta, GA, otherwise known as waaaay out in the woods.

I'm in Dallas, GA (Paulding County)
While I have no trailer yet, I do have a F-250 turbo diesel that can tow if you've got the trailer!
OR just come to the farm where I board since it parallels the famous Silver Comet Trail. Would love to have a trail riding buddy. There is plenty of flat and hills for conditioning.
Darn it ChocoMare :) Why aren't you in Dallas, TX? ;) I have a 3 horse trailer at my disposal and an extra horse for a friend.....but the only vehicle I have access to is my Mazda :(
I am always interested in tagging along with someone. Schooling shows, trail rides, gallop sets, hunting....whatever some willing to pick me up wants to do :D

Hey I'm in Chester, NY 10918
Have truck, 2 horse trailer, and a spare horse. My friend and I ride a couple of times a week at
Stewart Buffer Lands
Mohonk

Goosepond
We walk, trot, canter - but don't mind just walking/trotting for folks.
My 2 boxers come with us so if you or your horse is afraid of dogs......
We ride during the week and on weekends.
Thanks for the hard work Andy

Well, my two favorite eventing instructors (mostly Training level and below, and with school horses ;)) are Dawn at Green Acres (http://www.greenacresstables.com/) and Mary Ann at Hilltop (http://www.hilltopequestriancenter.com/). (Neither website is, um, great, but I promise they are both far better instructors than web designers... ;)) Green Acres is probably 10 or 15 minutes from UNH, and Hilltop about 25 minutes.
Dawn was my instructor when I lived down there, and taught me a TON. She's more of a low-key, go-out-and-do-it instructor. Mary Ann brought her students to a show series I used to manage and we got to know each other (plus, of course, seeing each other at the local events!). She takes things more slowly and precisely; her style might be an easier transition for someone coming from h/j. Both of them turn out students who are safe, well-prepared, and competitive (if they chose to compete!), though, so you won't go wrong either way.
Tell them that Jennie who owns Jude sent you. ;)

Well, you could take the bus out 108 most of the way to Green Acres (getting off/on at Freshet Rd/Kids 'n' More) and then bike (or walk...but bikes are faster ;)) the last mile. Or get a friend with a car to drop you off at Hilltop while they are shopping at WalMart/Target!

I wanted to wait until after my 5 yo had gone through the Lexington Mounted Police Sensory clinic before hitting the trails with her. So, on a beautiful fall Sunday in Kentucky, we met up at Logan-Hubble Park and did a 2 hour ride. bintniteza was great and very patient as my mare had never been on a trail ride. My horse is too young to ride at the moment. I am riding a a local trail riding farm until he is old enough. The farm is for public trail rides so there are many horses available for riding. I ride western and we have a lot of public and private trails in the area. We ride on roads, woods, along creeks, and the Horseshoe Trail. My riding is somewhat limited at present since I have to pay hourly to ride the farm's horses until my boy is old enough.

I thought this e-mail thread would be a great place to see if people would be interested in attending this informal get-together ride. I also posted this on the Endurance and Trail Riding Forum too....
KlawPaws and JazzRider are organizing a COTH Trail Ride at Gettysburg! We are keeping an open-mind about the weather because this bitter cold here on the East Coast can't last forever! We will have a small break from it someday!
The date has been set for Saturday, December 6th, 2008. We plan on meeting in the morning with the starting ride time at 11:00 am. We do not have a "bad weather" date since the holidays are fast approaching. If we need to reschedule it will be sometime in the beginning of 2009.
Some people may want to attend for various reasons. Some people may have been there before and some may have always wanted to... Some may want to come to see a piece of history. Some may want to meet fellow COTH'ers. Some may want to go but don't want to go alone. Whatever reason...let's ride!
Current events at Gettysburg helped us decide on a date. We also found some information on the trails (with the help of other COTH'ers). It appears there are somewhat limited trails (two hours or so). You must stay on the trail and off the battlefields - no trailblazing. For the most part it will mainly be a walking ride with a couple opportunities for a controlled trot. You will run into scarey objects (statues, cannons). We may run into groups of people and may be near a little bit of traffic. The trails also go to more remote areas that pedestrian traffic doesn't go on often. These trails can be a little narrow and rocky. Since we have never been there we cannot speak from personal experience. We may even have some people who may attend that are history buffs of sorts and may be able to provide interesting facts along the way!
Please respond to this e-mail or shoot me a PM if you can make it on Saturday, December 6th at 11:00. Once we have a list of people attending we can decide on where to park (it will depend on the number of trailers that will be coming).
Note: This is not a sponsored ride of any kind. Ride at your own risk!
Hope to hear from you soon!

Maybe come spring I'll bump this post and see if we can't find some trail riding peeps! I hope to start doing flatwork with him come spring too, so trailering to different arenas/barns would be fun too. Or if you're a horse person in this area and are interested in meeting, I'd LOVE that too! :D

Unfortunately we have POSTPONED the ride due to the anticipated cold weather this Saturday. We do, however, have plans to reschedule the ride after the holidays. Of course weather will dictate that too but we can cross our fingers, can't we? Basically we are worried that the open area will make a cold day really cold if there is any wind. Maybe we can reschedule when the forcast is agreeable. We may not have a lot of advance notice but we will try...after all we want to have as many attendees as possible! We want this to be a little social event as well as a ride through a historic landmark! We will keep you updated!
Please feel free to contact either myself or Jazzrider if your have any questions or suggestions!
Thanks!

I'm in Annapolis (not downtown but close) I have 4 extra horses at my farm besides which ever i'd be riding. I also have a trailer and frequent Fair Hill, MD where my rents live to ride or show or get free food.

I'd love to find riding buddies in the area!
I'm near Lynchburg, VA.
I have an Arab I'm conditioning for endurance and love to ride anywhere - we need the miles and experience! I have a truck and stock-type trailer, and we also have a few walking horses available for trail riding.

My horse lives in Loxahatchee, and I have a 2-horse BP. I enjoy trail riding, and can be quite adventuresome--I like to jump logs, rock pikes, whatever I can find. I also like horse-camping, and have camped with 2Jakes, a very capable horsewoman.

Wowee, new posts! I'll add all the new folks to the map tomorrow. If you want to update your location, just post your new locale and let me know its an update so I can remove your old location.
Its spring, time to get out and go trail riding with new friends!

I'm excited this thread is active again! I'm already on the map, I think, but just in case:
My horse lives out in Medfield, MA. We've got a lovely place to trail ride a few minutes walk from the barn. My horse just does flatwork now, but we're always looking for people to come out and hack with us! He may be moving to Upton, MA in a few months, and trail buddies would be even more welcome then. :)

 This is cool!
I'm in Hampton, VA 23669 and so is Critter! Who'd think you can find a working farm (complete with cows, chickens, goat, donkey, and ducks) in the middle of Hampton City?! Anyway, currently riding H/J but would love to find someone to trail ride with and have room to do canter/gallop sets and some little x-country jumping. I have a truck and 2horse BP trailer w/DR. Add me to the map! Thanks!

I'm in eastern Tucson, near Saguaro National Park East. No trailer, but plenty of trails accessible from the barn. I have a 24 year old Arabian gelding who thinks he's way younger than he is. We've been doing fairly light trail riding recently as he's been recovering from EPM.

Hey Ride2, I'm also near Lynchburg and have an Arabian gelding I'd like to get into endurance with. I need the conditioning more than he does, though! :uhoh:
I have a truck and small 2 horse BP, so I can go anywhere. :D

My horse is in Oregon City, OR (97045) -- about 20 miles south of Portland.
There are some great trails within 15 miles of my barn (McIver Park, for one) and space in our barn for overnighters (with BO's approval -- but she is pretty laid back as long as you sign all the legal forms and pay for food and shavings (if needed).)
Username is CamdenLab
I don't have an extra horse and no truck or trailer. I can help with gas, of course, and my horse hauls really well.
We are dressage beginners and would like to start showing next Spring. I like to take my horse to strange arenas for lessons with different trainers, when I can. I have an OTTB I'd like to get out on the trails because he is sensible enough to do them, but I have to teach him how to relax and enjoy them! So, we're not really advanced in the trail riding department, but we'd like to do it more.

Hi CBud:
I lease a horse next to Tradewinds Park in broward, if you are interested in trailering there to trail ride sometime, let me know! Tradewinds is fun because there are open areas to gallop, and even a decent sized hill (yes, a hill in south florida!!!)

Arabhorse - How funny! We should meet up and ride sometime. My hopeful distance horse is finishing up 60 days with a dressage trainer in NC but he should be home in the next few weeks. We should definitely set something up! I want to discover local trails - I just moved to the area about 1.5 years ago. I need to meet up with the local hunt club (who hunts practically in my backyard) and learn the trails near my house!
The thread is working!!!

I'd like to cap with the local hunt too, though just as a hilltopper. Casper can jump; me, not so much!
The local club in Concord is Stonewall Hounds. Here's their web addy if you want more info from them: www.stonewallhounds.com (http://www.stonewallhounds.com)
I'm familiar with a few of the people who ride with them. They're just a super bunch of folks.
My trainer would like to cap too, although she wants to do it with the Bedford Hunt Club, and not Stonewall. Either or for me, although Stonewall's closer geographically.
Casper just came home from the trainer's and I've been riding him fairly consistently, so once Huck is home give me a shout.
There are plenty of trails in our area, and Casper needs the experience if I'm going to be doing CTR and endurance with him.

What a wonderful thread and idea.
Up here we have a loose knit group of friendly riders who meet in the Park on a Wednesday.
Our motto is "We take our Fun Seriously". Meaning, we do take the care of our horses seriously. We are very serious about the picnic we pack and the wine that is served.
The group has broken up of late due to weather, job change, time, commitments, etc. but with the spring upon us, hopefully we can get together and more to come join us. Just trail riding, jumping logs, exploring, etc.
We have quite a few advenures, a Christmas lunch, etc.

Fair Winds Farm woud like to be added too. We have 50 acres on Back Bay with some trails. Sounds like a great way to meet people.
We are on a small island located on the North Carolina border just south of Virginia Beach.
Thanks for doing this.

I thought I'd bring this thread back up to the top given my great success with it. I found someone nearby last fall from this thread. This weekend, she helped me tackle my mares creek crossing phobia. We've ridden several times since meeting on this thread! :D Yea COTH!

I am in West Point VA, 23181. Have 3 horses (bombproof TB, baby, & super B**TCH). Never have enough time to ride all 3. Also have 3 horse trailer. Like to go new places hoping to get some foxhunting in this fall. Prefer to move out while on trail but will go slower just need to know who to bring. Would love to find a horseless rider that wants to go places and share gas or someone with their own horse who just wants to gte away from home. Oh I also have lots of trails around my house to ride on.

I doubt if there is anyone near me, but I'm in central Montana, and would LOVE to find a buddy to ride with=]
I mainly ride eventers now but I've ridden just about everything else=] So I would love some cross-country schooling/conditioning! Have a dinky trailer, but prefer not to haul to far, and I have some other horses who always need some exercise!

While I have no trailer yet, I do have a F-250 turbo diesel that can tow if you've got the trailer!
OR just come to the farm where I board since it parallels the famous Silver Comet Trail. Would love to have a trail riding buddy. There is plenty of flat and hills for conditioning.
UPDATE: I now have an XW/XT 2-horse Straight Load Gooseneck with Ramp :D

Looking for riding buddies in Howard County/Carroll County *MARYLAND* areas.
My horse is in Woodbine, MD (Howard Cty) and we enjoy riding out. We are members of TROT (www.trot-md.org) and ride 2-3x a week normally. I do not have a trailer but can hire one , esp if others will share the cost. The farm is Less than 5 miles from the lovely Patuxent River park (http://www.trot-md.org/trails/paxriver.php).
Let us know if you wish to ride out some time.
