View Full Version : FL horse saga UPDATE- COTHdogs, where are you? (Video found!)

Oh, boy, guys... this could get fun.
Note: This came from my friend, and there are three sides to every story (hers, theirs and the truth).
The FL owners called my friend on Monday... told her about how HORRIBLE "T" is and how he keeps getting worse and worse and they can't even get him IN the ring at shows anymore...
Last weekend, as soon as the girl mounted he started shaking and sweating, and he wouldn't walk in the gate- he was rearing and someone had to grab him and help her off he was so bad.
Oh, and do you want to buy him back?
Hellllooooo, seriously?! Needless to say, my friend is slightly distraught. She looked for him briefly but didn't find him on equine.com or dreamhorse.
Come on COTHdogs, find that horse!
I'd also be interested to know if this is true or not.

And now I will sit back and wait for the FL peeps to chime in ....

At this time of year I know only a handful of people down there - the winter season is when I have "connections" there.
Sounds like he is having a back problem. They should have a vet and a chiro out immediately!
I will ask around.

Unfortunately, I didn't read a single post in the original FL Horse Saga, although I know it was one of the Greats- I know, I know, grab popcorn, put down drink, go read. Anyways, I don't know any background, but I'm in FL if you need help...just summarize and tell me what I'm looking for.

It appears the rider/owner was top 10 junior is State 4-h show in the working hunters etc. Looks like she did quite well. Other shows indicate ribbons in equitation etc. There is a picture on their 4H website and the horse looks like a happy camper. Go figure.......not like they didn't have enough time to try the horse.......

So horse goes from happy camper (per Donkeyman's update) to rearing maniac in a very short period of time and they do not think medical and suddenly want to sell him?
Or gee, could it be they want to upgrade and they simply want to guilt the previous owner into buying the horse back for next to nothing?

Yeah, but now that show season is over, they don't need a horse anymore, do they? Like they'd have to feed it, stable it, shoe it, etc. Much better to borrow one free at the beginning of the show season, and send it back afterwards. Hey, why didn't I think of that?

Perhaps the new owners called b/c the OP's friend put a right of first refusal clause into her sales contract? Or... was there a sales contract? I forget.
Does the horse act like this at home? If he does, why are they still wasting time and money taking him to shows?
OP - did your friend ask if they'd had a vet or chiro look at the horse?
I wouldn't buy the horse back, and IIRC the OP's friend has neither the time nor resources to take him back. Probably the best she can do if the current owners don't want him is to try to find him a good home as a giveaway with all his issues disclosed.

Now, someone tell us how much they want for the poor horse, I'm guessing at least 10x what they paid, after all, it now has all those show miles on it....

As I recall from the original saga, T isn't right in my backyard, but I'm happy to go do detective work if necessary!! I love me some espionage ;) Somebody PM me the new owner and/or trainer or farm names and I'll see what I can quietly find out. Poor T, sounds like he needs a good vet and chiro workup. :(

I'm not sure there was a right of first refusal, with all the blunders she made... I'm pretty sure she knew she wouldn't be able to afford to buy him back anyway, but you never know.
I'm wondering how much they want for him.
Seems like its medical to me, too, but I doubt my friend mentioned it... she said she didn't really have much to say, she was a bit shocked and all- T was such a puppy dog, I can't imagine him ever doing something like that without good reason...

If she did (I stopped following the original thread after a while), then she needs to download and KEEP copies of it - thus proving that the horse was "as advertised" at time of sale and any subsequent problems are the fault of buyer not seller!
And P4M, you definitely have a point. Gee, maybe us po' folks can ALL start doing sellers this way to get nice heese just in time for WEF!:lol::lol:

Ok, after that last thread consumed my life I swore that I wouldn't read this but I just have to comment.
1. That is a LOT of bit (and double reins!) to trust a kid with.............one who isn't even able to control her own position yet!
2. How is it that she can ride this guy with just a halter, bareback but has to ride in a harsh bit and double reins?
3. While this horse isn't perfect, knees could be tighter, higher etc., he is a really really cute mover that is worth well over what was paid for him and obviously worth his weight in gold since he is willing to put up with a kid that bounces on his face and whose position is jarred loose by his less than "back cracking" jump.
In short, they have never appreciated him from what I understand.

Sounds like they ruined him, and should be lucky to get $2,000 back for him. Tell him sure, you'll take him back, but minus his devaluation.
I second the idea that now that the season is over, they don't want to upkeep the horse over the winter.
What if they did sell him back to the original owner?
What if, through the winter, the old owner cleans him up, chiro's him and sorts out his aches and pains, gets him going again sound, and betch, just betcha, the next spring they come a knocking to see how he's doing and, golly, if he's really going good, well take a look at him and maybe if we feel comfortable, like after a three month trial, we'll consider buying him back again? Hmm?

**** that! The current owners should be paying the OP's friend for training, for shipping, for medical diagnosis, etc if the horse goes back.

Spent almost all day reading that other chain! At least at the time of sale, the previous owner was not in any position to take back the horse (even when she technically still owned it); so it's not likely she's going to be able to buy it back now.
Sounds like someone else is going to have to take this horse on .... or the current owners just need to take proper care of it and have it vetted and chiro'd as needed. Maybe another call to momma trainer is in order so daughter trainer can do the right thing?

I'm totally up for this, unless somebody closer is going to volunteer to go check him out. So COTHdogs, find out if the poor boy will be showing at Sumter on the 20th! And of course a nice big fat double-broken loose ring snaffle would be the first order of business.

If more than one peep wanted him, we could have a drawing of some sorts. I don't do leaping anymore, so I'd just be part of the syndicate.
A breeder in my neck of the woods donated a POA gelding to the local 4-H Club. Every year they have a drawing and the person whose name is drawn gets to take the horse for a project that year--they free lease the horse, get to pay all the bills and their own entry fees for showing. This has been going on for years and seems to work out swell. ;)
Let's just hope this would work out better than that paper horse that COTHers were sending around the country. Does anyone know where that thing is right now??? :uhoh:

So that the OP doesn't get flooded with PM's- the site in question is my personally owned web site -see below.
The horse is listed under basic listings.
Also, if I may speak on behalf of the kids-please be easy on them. I used to know them and they are actually really sweet kids. Try not to hold them responsible for any parent/trainer deal.

I followed the original thread with horror and I am sure others saw this train wreck coming..it had whistles, blinding headlights and everything..but fell on deaf ears apparently.
Poor horse. I have never seen a horse jump like pegasus, and not in a pretty way. Let go of his face! Yikes! He is a saint for not dumping her off. You can see in his face he is being a patient guy. Hmm maybe his rearing is from being over bitted and having some chick hang off his face!

Ok, so I don't get why double reins are so evil and why someone can't sell a horse for more then you paid for him. Aren't you supposed to use two sets of reins on a pelham? Yeah it looks like an awful lot of bit for a hunter, but you see pelhams in EQ all the time. Hell I've seen people school in elevators then switch to the pelham to show. He also looks like he's jumping just about the same as with the orignal owner pic, his head might be more free with a less restrictive hold but his body and legs are still the same. I'm not sure how anyone can tell he needs back work from one picture.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v513/murrayprincess24/6.jpg
The add says he needs a quiet ride, maybe his current owner is a bit of a nervous nellie and he got a little fast with her. They tried a pelham then wisely decided to sell him when nothing else worked.
Since nobody here on COTH is ponying up the dough for a new home I hope he finds a better match with his next owner and that his current rider gets a more suitable horse for her needs and never wanders across this thread.

You have to read the entire Florida Horse Saga (it may be in Favorites) to understand the interest over the ad.

The pictures you posted made for interesting observation - hmmmm.....
Agreed on the pelham. I am not a fan for the youth horse to need one, but when i fox hunted my horses were by and large in a pelham - I wish I knew about elevators back then - LOL! see I had this horse......
And selling for more money? I do it all the time - it's business. HOWEVER the previous seller was SO jacked around by the present owner/seller it's hard not to get irate over this one. :(

This is the first post from this thread and the main reason people figure he needs work.

Double reins aren't evil, however, they should be used by someone who can already ride and control a horse. Putting them in the hands (literally) of someone who is a nervous nellie in order to give her more control is asking for a disaster. When youknow a student hits her horse in the face at every fence, the answer is not to give her more bit! A good trainer knows this and would have either spent another year at home with horse and rider combor OR gotten nervous nellie a more suitable mount. But you know, there is no money in schooling students at home.

The email that was attached to the video link was from the FL trainer to her mom in IL (my friend's trainer). It basically said that "big sis" can't ride the horse, but "lil' sis" (trainer's pride and joy) can, shes the one riding in the video. Big sis can't handle the reality of that fact, so they're selling him. Trainer then snarks on the family a little bit. Cute, huh?
