This was sent to me this morning. It made me cry again

Rainbow Bridge

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge. When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals that had been ill and old are restored to health and to vigour. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, someone who was left behind. They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance.. His bright eyes are intent; his eager body begins to quiver,

Suddenly, he breaks from the group, galloping over the green grass, faster and faster.

You, Norval have been spotted, and when you and Shadow finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happyness rains upon your face; your hands again caress his beloved head and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your beloved horse, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together.... forever..

Take good care Norval.

You have my deepest sympathy Laurie and it has been a miserable weekend. Little things bring tears to my eyes and I can't sleep. The well wishers poems just break me up.
Time and another horse will help ease the pain and I was horse hunting this evening.
Nothing will replace him but being without a horse is not a option.
I am an addict and a horse is my fix.
Hang in there Laurie as I will do.

Thank you Vickey. It is extra special comming from you. In times of sorrow past differences are set aside. I feel you suffered more then me seeing your mare burn. NOthing could be worse.
I went horse hunting this evening and put a bid in on a 2 1/2 year old stud colt and if successful he will be bought and gelded tomorrow so I can bring him home on the weekend and get on with my life.

To everyone who wished me well a deep thank you and it helps ease the pain by spreading it out to you.
Thank you. Shadow is gone but his memory will live on forever and if there is a horsey heaven he will have a prominent spot until I get there to join him.
Again thank you everyone

I too am so very sorry. You may remember I lost one suddenly last yr to a broken leg, and I think you said you had had that happen before. Its just awful when you try so hard to train and bond and then this kind of shock happens.

I know what you mean about the addiction and some of us have to keep our horse keeping routine no matter what. For me, however, it gets harder to get that emotional bond I had with my mares of the past. I hope your new one works out, for a moment I was tempted to ship you Seabiscuit LOL.

Judy I have lost 2 horses in my 50 years. Sure I bought and sold lots but 2 , only two horses died on me.. One was Echo and the other Shadow.
Last night my daughter pointed out to me that neither had a concrete name. They were both gosts, nothing solid.
I did buy a new boy last night or rather at 7:15 this morning when we came to an agreement but beleive me he will get a solid name.
No more taking chances.
Thank you Judy and a Seabiscuit would have been welcome:lol::lol:

Norval - I went horse shopping right away too. I think it's the best thing you can do. That was my first experience (and only) with losing one so sudden and tragically. The first 2 or 3 days I was too much in shock to do anything. But within a week I was making phone calls and combing through equine.com. Exactly one month to the day later I brought the Arab weanling home. I knew I couldn't ride right away so I bought a baby that I could raise and that would give me a while before having to develop another riding partnership. It worked out really well.

I'm glad you found another horse so soon. Concrete names are good (not as in, landing on concrete). I'm superstitious about names--can't seem to shake that, irrational as it seems.

Let us know what name you decide on for your new gelding. We'll be looking forward to hearing how he's coming along.

My injured horse is getting used to stall rest and seems to be doing okay. It's too early to know whether infection in the bone will be a problem.

This is Amazing colors by True Colors. I will not keep that name but will wait until I have him a few weeks and get to know him.
HE is actually a 3 1/2 year old stallion, not 2 1/2 as I first was told.
He is being gelded this week and I will pick him up this weekend.
I am still not sleeping worrying about every little thing. I hope he goes through gelding alright, through the trailer ride home, through introduction to the new facilities, etc etc. Hope he has no vices.
He is as green as grass, other then leading and possible tying with a single line he knowns nothing NOW. Give me a week:):)

Another handsome boy. With as much as you are worrying, I'm sure you've got a good plan in place for things to go smoothly. I've seen plenty of older colts gelded, and they usually do okay (I worked on a lay-up farm and castration of older colts was common).

Colic can be a concern following castration of the older guys. FWIW, horses who were gelded while lying down had a faster recovery than those cut while standing. My boss noticed this, and then I kept an eye out afterwards. Sure enough.

Hope your guy is a tough one and gets through okay. With your training experience, the rest should be easy. ;)

They are going to lay him down on the front lawn. It is more sanitary there and I hope it all goes well but again I worry about infection.
I will have 2 people with me for moving him and if I have to I will ride beside him in the trailer. He will wear leg wraps and a helmet and again the first sound of trouble I am in the trailer with him.
Being a stallion he will be well aware of all the mares in the new 36 stall barn. Fencing bothers me. It is all electric rope, his home fencing was all stainless bars. He will have to learn those little invisible ropes hurt.
He will have to learn to run with other geldings, etc etc.
The training I can handle. He is actually very stable under testing that I put him through.
I have high hopes for him.

He does have attitude but was really nice to handle, no nippy or anything but sure showed off in the arena by running. One time he ran right up to me, reared as high as he could go, spun , kicked high in the air and raced off yet when I wanted him to came to me.
I hear he likes pares. I have 4 trees loaded with pares. I will bribe him. I teach all my horses to come to a special wistle of mine. I will let him run and then give that special wistle and if he comes he gets a pare. He will quickly learn to come when called. To come means a treatand they learn quickly.
All my horses were taught to come to that wistle.
I certainly will post pictures and training results.
Name comes after I know him better.
Is True Colors a recognized stud????

I LOVE Thee Desperado! Awesome awesome horse.

I'm glad you bought another Arab. I will never be without an Arabian, so help me god!

I don't think you can re-register him with a new name page the age of 2, but you can certainly change his name - just not on the paperwork. I changed mine's name too. Her registered name at birth was Psweet Treat. Accck. I changed it to Padrona Auventera when she was still a foal. But I still call her Sweets though.

I'm not worried about a name change. It means nothing. Strider's registered name was Streaker and it remained on his papers but honestly were is his Amazing colors?? He is a beautiful bay and I will not call him Colors or Amazing . No I will pick a calling / stall name and that is what he will be known as forever by me. His registered name will remain the same.
Arab?? Is their any other breed:lol::lol:
No I am stuck on my arabs too.

Sorry to hear about your loss!

Time does make the wounds fade - I lost 2 competition horses last summer in a freak pasture accident. While I still miss Inkhi and Fish, I can now talk about them without getting weepy and with fond memories.

Going to distance rides and standing on the ground while my mom competes on our remaining distance horse has been difficult, we have managed to share one horse ( I get END and mother gets CTR/LDs).

Its not like we don't have enough horses to share (16 in total) but none others that are suitable for distance.

Things happen for a reason - it might be years before you discover what that reason is but all will become clear one day. (I'm still waiting......)

No he is not home yet and thank you for asking. He is still too studdish but Friday 19th is the day he will come home. He still squeels at the ladies and I want him a little calmer but again next Friday is the big day.
Guys I still miss Shadow something terrible.
I drove the hour and 15 minutes to spend some time with the new guy.
Too some pictures but they didn't turn out very good.
Anyway I am leaning towards Rio as a stable name.

I lost my first horse to death 18 1/2 years ago and it broke my heart. That was a Friday at 5 oclock when the phone call came. Sunday at 1 I bought Strider and it started a 17 year relationship.
So maybe you are right and things happen for a reason but right now I do not believe that and I honestly would give $10,000 to have Shadow back.

He is totally totally unbroken. Other then to lead he is untrained. He was held for the farrier but no cross ties. I am picking him up next Friday and by the weekend he will be wearing a saddle.
I was into jumpers in the 80's and competed my first endurance ride in 89 and immediately sold the jumper and have been a arab man ever since.

Shadow14, I am very, very sorry for your loss. If I were to say any more, I would start crying. I don't know you, but the loss of a horse is a universal pain that cuts deep.

Congratulations on finding a new partner! He is cute, cute, cute! Regarding the name change, here's the wording from AHA:

*************

ARTICLE 1031. NAME CHANGE

The recorded owner may request a change of the horse's name provided the horse has no registered progeny, is not an imported animal, has never been exported, has not received any points in previous IAHA or AHA programs, has not been issued a Certificate of Registration for Racing and does not have any recorded results in the OEIP Program or Arabian Community Shows (ACS). The Certificate of Registration must be submitted, along with a written request including the signature of the recorded owner, and the name change fee. Upon approval by the AHA Registry, an amended Certificate of Registration will be issued to the recorded owner of the horse.

This name change rule applies only to domestic horses (Article 1031.) or horses imported in utero. (Article 1004., 1006.)

**********************

So there is no two year old limit as I think someone else mentioned. Hope this information helps!

Thank you Vickey. While out looking I looked at alot of horses and nothing caught my eye. When I was about to give up for the day they mentioned a 2 year old stallion out back. Well I took one look, they said my eyes just popped wide open and I was in love. I tried a few tests I try will all my horses and began negotiations on him.
It took 6 days to come to an agreement, price was not an issue, gelding on their property and keeping him for a week was more the problem.
Anyway they gelded him, I took him home 5 days later, that was Friday 19th, started riding him on Sunday and by Wednesday he was running trail.
His papers showed 3 years 8 months not 2.
So after 8 days he is really good on the trail, seems spook free, good pacing, good steering and good stop.
Loping is months away. I want to build him up before I try any loping and it will be a year before I start those long lopes. 3 is a little young.
Again thank you for the kind words.

arh sorry shadow for your loss i do know how you feel
but remeber he knew he was in an excellent home and loved you just as much as
you loved him, shadow will always be with you in your heart

lovely looking horse he was to especially for a grey neddy he was a classic as in unique

as for the new horse he wont be the same as shadow as each horse has a different personality and each horse captures your heart for a different reason
but bonding will be there as you work him and get him ready to be used in your type of fun things and you will love him no more and no less as you did shadow

horses are the most graceful beings on this earth and we as humans and horse people appreciate there beauty in more ways than one

the newbie rio -- is stunning to, you have an eye for a nice looker
have fun and enjoy-- you could get than lovely photo of shadow blown up poster size and stick somewhere you like to be, mine are all in my front room, of my dogs and horses along with my children - as they after all were part of my family

Why are you guys making me cry all over again???
I watched the electric horseman last night and when they turned the stallion loose at the end I thought of this a cried all over again, as I am doing now
I know I posted this earlier but it came back to me last night when the stallion ran free

Dam it guys I can hardly see the screen

On the brighter note if you saw Rio this past weekend running trail with all the dirt bikes, the 4 wheelers, the numerous water/mud crossing and running the shoulder of a busy highway you would be amazed that only 2 weeks ago this was a totally unbroken boy. Not even properly halter broke and yet here he is taking is place and with such manners.
He is fearless and a quick learner and it just goes to show what 4 or 5 hours a day training can accomplish in short order.
3 weeks ago Monday he was an unruly isolated stallion.
He will be going out with another gelding in another week since he no longer seems to want to fight with everything. Other then breeding he has never had a friend.

That said " I still miss Shadow terribly""

Rio has a funny habit of licking my hand. He is still in a round pen since he was a stud when he came and wanted to fight everything. He plays with the latch and I know he would set himself free so I tie the gate also with a rope and every time I come for him, while I untie the rope he sticks his small nose through the bars and gently starts to lick my hand, he is very gentle about it but anytime I put my hand anywhere near his nose he starts to lick and suck.
Just like a baby???? For a stud/ex-stud this seems stange to me???

the newbie rio -- is stunning to, you have an eye for a nice looker
have fun and enjoy--

When I went horse hunting I went to the 2 arab breeders that sold me Strider my old endurance horse and the one that sold me Shadow.
I first looked at where Shadow came from including his $10,000 stud. Nothing appealed to me including his $10,000 stud which is wife convinced him to cut and sell to me cheap, knowing what a good loving home he was going to end up in.
I then went along with this breeder to the other breeder where I bought Strider from and looked at all she had to sell.
Nothing caught my eye and I was about to leave when they mentioned a young stud out back in isolation.
He was in a miserable little pen totally isolated behind the barn, beside the manure pile where is spent is young life without seeing another horse.
MY eyes lit up a sight a him, I entered his pen, haltered him and took him into the arena and turned his loose.. It was love and after his roaring around, rearing, kicking out I test him with a soft rope looped around his front leg and he stopped when he felt it tighten up and I started negotiations to buy him.
It took a week but in the end I bought him. Price was not an issue, gelding was and I needed a gelding, no stallion for me.
Anyway I bought him, gelded him the next day and the rest is history.
Today he is a well mannered young boy, running trail/highways alone with out fear.
Next week he will start going out with another gelding.
Today he is in a nice secure round pen right beside the other horse and he is actually stiffing nosed with his stablemate and not bitting or squealing so next week in he goes
He just has to learn electric fencing, that will be shocking.
Anyway enough rambling and again thank you guys for all the kind words and stop making me cry:lol::lol::lol:
Shadow will never be forgotten
I have a silver box, engraved in loving memory of Shadow with a piece of main in a red ribbon and all his cards.
Dam it guys I am crying again

Dear Shadow14,

I first want to send my condolences on your horse that passed, he was very stunning with a kind soft eye, may time & thoughts from others heal your heart. Second I want to say congrats on your new boy, he's beautiful!!!! I have a relative of his, my mare is Say Grace, she's The Minstril's granddaughter. All I can say is enjoy the ride, the egyptian arabs seem to be quite athletic and get in shape quickly. Say Grace even looks a lot like Rio, I'll email you pics sometime if you'd like. Geez, now I just wish she had a brain like Rio, that's amazing what you & Rio have accomplished so far, he seems like he has a great brain between those ears & looks to boot, your one lucky owner, you wouldn't want to trade would you, just kidding!! I'm excited & happy for you, your new journey with Rio will be grand one. Best Wishes, Lisa

Glad you are up on your feet moving with a new boy... shame you gelded him! (stallions get to run with the geldings too=) )

but I am curious why you are riding a three year old arab? their knees are much slower to close and bones are still very soft... the likelyhood of damage is greatly increased! It would be a great loss for you to have an unreliable replacement of your recent loss

I am at a boarding stable. After the loss of Shadow my wife suggested we sell and buy a horse farm but that is not for me. I built my place years ago, everything you look at was done by me. I just don't want to sell so it is boarding stables or we even considered moving the horse home but that would ruin my lawns and I am very annal about my property.

No boarding stables want a Stallions. I don't want a stallion and yes I have been around stallions all my life. Seems every boarding stable has one belonging to the owner.
Anyway I wish he wasn't 3 but he is and I don't want to let him sit for another year, paying board and not riding. I do not Canter/lope and will not until he is 4 but he will jog trail and learn. I had a vets opinion on his knees and he felt they were closed. He has good sturdy bone, good feet and I hope he is ok.
Again I don't want a 3 year old but that is what I found and that is what I will work with.

wasn't a hit on why you gelded him... just thought it was a shame... he is a good looking horse. (well aware of the issues w/ boarding a stallion... grrr sexest horse world!)

Shrug... I would still be concerned about riding him... (although I can definitly relate to the paying board not riding bit as I board almost 45 minutes from my job... 50 hours a week its difficult to drive past your house during the week and not want to just go home instead of ride!) There is a ton of ground work that could be done for several months, even saddle work on the ground. But if you are confident in your vet... ride on

Thanks Lisa. I seem to get really lucky with brains. Shadow had to be shown something new 3 times and he got it. Rio seems to get it right after the 1st time. He is afraid of nothing but I wonder if that is his Stallion hormons and if he will become more timid as he matures???
Stallions can be fearless and I have been asked that question yesteday by a student who knows nothing about horses. Got me thinking.
Rio is by Colors. He does have a great brain, quick learner and really comming down from a stallion. I see daily changes. NO more fence walking, contented in cross ties and being brushed.
I do his feet weekly to get him into a routine, I certainly pick daily but once a week he gives his feet files, radiused on the cradle and stand and I carve a bit with a knife to teach him to feel the pressure , the twisting.
He use to be tranked to do his feet, no more.
If you met me out on trail you would never guess he is so green. I work him on something new every time we go out, be it water crossings, mud , construction equipment or hills , something new is added almost daily.
