The new predictions call for TS Hanna (http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/refresh/graphics_at3+shtml/084814.shtml?5day#contents) to head toward the South-Eastern Seaboard and reach Hurricane strength late Thursday or early Friday.

The winds from Gustav are keeping her from strengthening, right now.
I'll take a weak hurricane this way, if it means she'll stop following Katrina's path.

Oh, man, those "H" hurricanes are the ones to watch out for! At least if you live in the land that Hugo and Hazel laid waste.
I have half doors on my barn. I latch them open all day and only close them when I feed. But it occurred to me today that a hurricane could snap those latches and I'd have four big old four by four foot wooden sails flapping around out there. DH says we ought to just take em off the hinges if it looks like it'll be bad. What would y'all do?

I don't completely trust the hurricane path... in 2004 Orlando was not supposed to get hit by Charley and we did, then a month later Hurricane Jeanne turned out into the Atlantic Ocean only to do a 360 and cut right across Florida. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Jeanne_2004_track.png)
The constant 4 days of rain from Fay and then the daily Florida rain has central florida still floating.

...Hazel laid waste...
You remember that b*tch too, huh? Her eye came right through my hometown and ripped most of the shingles off our roof.
We'd rented a cottage at Long Beach, NC for some fishing. Decided to pull out late that night -- things just didn't "feel right". The next day the cottage was found over a mile away from its foundation.

 No, I was still a few years in the future when Hazel paid us a visit. But I heard so many hair-raising Hazel stories as a kid that I feel as though I remember her.:)
Put a second latch on the inside?
I'm worried that the wind will get behind the doors (which are latched to the outer barn wall to keep them open) and rip them free of the latches. I don't know if a second latch would help.:) But thanks.

Anyone know a dog-friendly hotel in the Aiken area? That is on my to-do list today as well.

Yeah, we had about 5 hours to prepare for Charlie. My farm in Chuluota is finally drying out, though now my place resembles a spring thaw, there is so much mud. Thankfully we did not get any rain yesterday..every day of no rain gives me hope that we will resume to normalcy soon. But the poor people on the lakes and St John's river have it really bad and the river has yet to crest. Only ones profiting from this water are the gator hunters..they are removing lots of gators from flooded neighborhoods!

I have the same set up. My door are held open with eye bolts and double ended snaps. I put a second set on when Rita was headed this way in 2005. I really like your husbands ideal to just take the doors off. Especially if your horses are used to being together all the time.

We're keeping a close eye on this one! Looks like Ike is right behind Hanna....shew! Looks like a fun week ahead.
If there is anyone in our area on the coast that needs a couple of stalls, I have a barn with 2 stalls available, also a large treeless wood fenced pasture, in the Conway area. There are no horses there right now, so you would be responsible for providing shavings and care, but it is inland and on high ground. :)

I feel for everyone who lives anywhere near where she will hit. I really do (heck, even here in Pgh, PA we've felt the wrath of rain from storms like Ivan so Hanna could possibly do some flooding damage here if she's strong enough). Right now though, since I can, I'm having myself a pitty party :(
I am taking my first real vacation in years. I'm going to Corolla on the Outer Banks of NC - I get my keys to my beach house at 1 PM on Saturday the 6th :sigh: Of course right? I mean, why would I be allowed to go on vacation? I wasn't allowed to show my horse all year because he got hurt so I might as well not de-stress watching the wild ponies and listening to the waves crash on the beach either
Ok. Pitty party over. Well, not really but I'll shift my focus back to those that really have a reason to be worried about Hanna ;). I can't imagine going through this every year. You guys in the "hot spots" are much more brave than I am. I whimper over the snow and such that wreaks havoc here but these storms are so very destructive :(

If it makes you feel any better, we leased a condo on the shore back in 2004. It was our first real vacation in 20 years. I paid my money, picked up my key, settled in the room with a lovely ocean view...and the phone rang. My horse had colicked on day one, and would I please come back. My ocean view turned into a 24-hour view of my colicking horse in his stall, and that was that. I did get clearance from the vet on the last day of my 'vacation' to go back down to the shore to pick up my things and turn in the key, though. No matter how I spell it, I just can't seem to get the word 'horse' to morph into the word 'vacation'.

At least I know my vacation may only be rained on and maybe delayed a little not completely ended (I hope!).
I've been saying this was going to happen from the beginning:no:. Planning this vacation has nearly been the death of me and I've been saying a hurricane would be the cherry on top...then along comes Hanna
Oh well. I'll deal. I hope the best for those in the direct path. I also hope she stays "small" so the damage is the most minimal possible.

We were in Charleston during Hugo, waited out the storm upstate at my folks and I was slackjawed at how hard Charlotte was hit. It also damaged PA Friday morning, killing a young boy when an elementary school cafeteria wall was blown down by the wind.
Sterno, ice and water for humans if you have to stay on the coast. Though w/ horses, I'd be making arrangments to hit the road if it was predicted to be close.

I work for county government, so I have the inside scoop. First of all, you did not hear it from me. Starting tomorrow they are planning a mandatory evacuation here on the beach side of the waterway. They are not playing around with this one, especially with Ike behind it and a potential Josephine on it's heels. SC has a bad history with "H" storms, so I don't have a good feeling about this one. We've been told as of this morning it could be a cat 3 or even low cat 4, if conditions are favorable.
Everyone needs to have their hurricane plans in place and be ready to take action when the time comes. Get your supplies together now, for yourself, and your animals. Looks like the next week or so is going to be interesting.

Please let it go more easterly! The report said this morning that Beaufort is right in the center, but that it could head towards Charleston (where I have relatives, lot of relatives) or here in Savannah. Let it wobble north east, with emphasis on EAST.
And Ike is coming. And one or two others.
Everyone get their horses out of low areas. Guess HHI and Bluffton barns will move some.
Please be careful. Watch the downed power lines and keep your dogs and cats and horses INSIDE till all power lines are up again.

Fill up all containers with water, inside the house and outside and at the barn.
Just in case of power failures. You need water for you and your horses and dogs, etc., and to flush toilets.
I'm hoping it will turn more north east and miss the coast. But with Ike and Josephine and whatever behind Hanna, we need to "hunker down".
We've already had our first tornado ever here on the coast this summer and we don't want the hurricanes. Everyone concentrate that the storms go EAST.

Wind speed is given in Knots. Multiply by 1.15 to obtain wind speed in MPH.

Last I heard she was expected to become a hurricane again and head north.
Our weather station said she would come in around charleston, head north, pass over raleigh and zip on north. Said it'd be moving fast enough that we'd prolly only get about 4" of rain, wind, and the usual tornados on the east side.
Weatherman said our rain should start Friday, worst will be during the night and clearing by Saturday afternoon.
Keeping a close on it, and hoping for the best. I'm about as ready as I can get, just a few more things to do.

I remember getting whacked by Hugo when I was a kid living in SE PA. I was in school when it hit, and the teachers did a really good job of keeping us calm. My family had just moved to a farmette, and we were boarding my bff's pony for her. Bless her heart, my non-horsey mom went out several times during the storm to make sure he was okay and happy in his stall. :)
Fast-forward about 10 years, and I found myself working at a high-end barn in NY when the remnants of Floyd (I think??) blew through. The other employees at the barn were from the UK, and they had never seen anything like it. ;) I was the youngest of the group, and the calmest: "What, you've never seen a flying tree before? Well, it's no big deal as long as it doesn't hit anything important. Oh, and you might not want to stand near any windows." :D

Most everyone down here keeps a supply of plywood/shutters on hand, they'll wait until the track is a little more certain before boarding up. Horry County is upgrading to OpCon3 at 10AM this morning, meaning the storm poses a significant threat. No evacs have been ordered yet, but they're on standby. I'd venture to guess we'll have an early school closing tomorrow, which will mean county will close too.

LOL 2 tbs, it keeps life interesting! Looks now like it's headed for Wilmington, which is 90 miles from us. Kinda close, but at least we're on the west side.
AND, I know exactly what'll happen. Just about the time it's ready to make landfall, we'll lose power. Happens every time. We'll crank up the generator, but with no cable/internet still won't really know what's going on.
If there's a good side to hurricanes, you do know they're coming, so you can get pretty well prepared. Then you just sit and wait. At least it's only a

Everytime I look at the track it gets worse. Does this look like the path Isabel took to anyone else? I'm NOT happy at all. We will be bracing for a possible direct hit by tropical storm Hannah here in SE VA. I guess it could be worse...it could be a hurricane when it gets here instead of a tropical storm. I need to think positively.

I don't have the info on the Cat 2 and lower hit point but I did just get an update from my rental people - no evacs yet but they are expecting gale force winds and are asking us to come later to avoid the most direct weather :(
For the record-my rental house about 4-5 miles from the VA boarder so that's pretty north at least to me. I'm not sure what that means as far as initial landfall but it doesn't sound pretty if it's going to affect the area where I'll be that much :(
Then Ike. Oh good grief! He's too big for his britches right now. It seems I'll get pushed out by him if he stays on track. I really feel for you guys who live in these areas!!:(

Well, see, we tried that. We passed cutting-edge environmental legislation that said if someone's structure was more than a certain percentage destroyed, and the structure was seaward of the forty year erosion line, then it couldn't be rebuilt. This was known as the retreat policy, and it was intended to get all those buildings off the dune line so the beach could rebuild itself naturally and the taxpayers could stop forking out for beach renourishment.
We passed this legislation right before Hurricane Hugo. :sigh: So iinstead of effecting a gradual retreat, we suddenly had lots of people who owned hotels and vacation homes and etc. who couldn't rebuild their structures. Some of them wanted to challenge the Beach Bill. And they had very deep pockets. Deep enough to take them alllllll the way to the US Supreme Court.
Justice Scalia sided with a developer who claimed the state deprived him of all use of his property and said the state of SC would either have to let people rebuild or buy their property. There was no way SC could afford to buy all the property effected by Hugo, and the Beach Bill was effectively defanged.

Nah, no flaming from me, I agree, Myrtle Beach is tacky tourist central, the Redneck Riviera. While I wish no harm to anyone, a good beach sweep would be nice. I just don't understand why they didn't develop more like the Charleston area did~ it's done tastefully and is much more family oriented.

Last hurricane we had I had a place to evacuate the livestock. So, I did it. Nothing happened, so I brought them back.
After the hurricane was "over", we got days of torrential downpours and the whole area flooded and all roads were closed. No way to get out.
So much for my fancy disaster plan.
If the worst happens and any Virginians or North Carolinians need to evacuate, the Virginia Horse Council has a list of places that will take livestock, and they also list who can take stallions, or foals, goats, donkey's, etc. RNB posts here and participated in the creation of that list. I think, but am not sure, most of these places are private farms/facilities that can take in extra animals in an emergency.
Here is a link to the website, http://www.virginiahorsecouncil.org/links.html I don't see a link to any emergency/disaster stuff so you'll have to contact them or look around the site.
Good luck.

I can't stand Hilton Head. I find it pretentious, over-priced, and too hard to find anything in. For those who haven't been, HH zoning requires all signs to be two feet tall and camoflaged. You have to part the shrubbery to find the Wal-Mart.
However, I'm glad HHI exists cause otherwise we'd be the ones having to put up with all those snooty Yankee tourists. I'll take the bikers and the Bubba's anyday.
But as for hurricanes - I'm one of those annoying people who gets all excited about them. It's the closest thing we have to a snow day. When I was an undergrad at Coastal Carolina, we got out of classes to help stow all the computers and scientific equipment. Then we marine science majors were sent down to the beach with survey equipment to take beach elevation profiles before and after the storm. It was very exciting.
But it's not all that much fun sitting around for days or weeks afterwards without power or water. That part I'm not so crazy about. Hanna is still down near Daytona Beach! We are getting the first rain bands and wind here in georgia, between warsaw and ossabaw islands, jjust south of savannah. Looks like if will stay a tropical storm and they are saying it will go in at Myrtle Beach at 2am.
Ike is following a similar track and just like before, they are predicting that Ike will go into the gulf. But they said that about Hanna and the storm came up the gulf stream.
Hope everyone is ok north of us and I hope it does pass us by. At least it is a tropical storm and not a raging hurricane. Pilot HuntJumpSC please move the coth plane and take the sub out and anchor it in the habor. We've lost Blind Alter but we may need both the plane and the sub if these storms keep coming up the coast.

And while it is too late to go buy generators now for this series of storms:
When you buy a generator, buy the biggest one you can afford. Make sure it can carry the load for air/heat, depending on the season, and for the stove and all.
Smaller generators are good for getting brief power, but the big ones, from the big companies who sell you your heat pumps and A/C, are the ones to buy, just like buying a heating system or A/C system.
Many years ago in the dark ages, after we were powerless on our river here between islands for over a week, my father who was an electrical engineer and contractor, put in a huge generator in it's own "house" out back.
For many years my horses had power, lights and running water, in their stables out back, when no one else on the bluff had it in houses during storms and hurricanes.
Now all the doctors have moved onto our bluff and they all have huge generators too.
Get the biggest one you can afford and put it in, and it will go on automatically when the power goes off.

Our generator does the whole house (3 heat pumps), had it put in after Fran. I think the newer ones are much more efficient than ours, but I still love having it sitting out there.
Not having to worry about power is such a huge relief. I don't begrudge one cent of what it costs. We don't have the auto switch...it would have been an extra 2500, and we tend to lose power for 5-10 min at a time anyway, and didn't want it coming on for short periods.

We got a pretty good rain band about an hour or two ago, not much wind, just a little breeze. I kind of laugh because I hate the boat, but the poor thing is literally located smack-dab on the Chesapeake Bay. It'll be the 1st big storm and with the expected water levels, it might not make it out that easily.
I also hope nothing happens down at my barn. The poor place was a mess about a month ago when a thunderstorm came through. I shutter to think what Hanna will bring.
Let's just hope for the best
Oh and my name is Hannah.
I keep saying those hurricane people left out the last H, but it was meant to be Hannah.

One thing I learned when we were waterless for 9 days (shudder)....
I put a trash bag in the bathroom, and put the toilet paper in that. Kinda gross, but it meant having to lug water in from the pool less often. Needless to say, I did not try to do the flush thing every time I went. And, just add the water to the bowl, not the tank, you'll use less that way.
Rain has picked up quite a bit here, but not much wind yet.

Hanna is currently east of Savannah and is about 50 miles off shore.
No wind in coastal Georgia except a light breeze, but rain has gone from a light drizzle to a medium rainfall.
It is raining harder north of us, and Charleston where I have relatives got heavier rain and wind.
Good luck to SC and NC and VA. Hope this passes thru with miminal damage.
Hope that Ike does not come behind Hanna.

We had a brief lull, now it's pouring, but no real wind yet. Local weather said our winds and really heavy rain would come around 3 or 4 a.m.
I've left the barn doors open because it's still very warm, and humid. I'll probably close them up at 10 when I do barn check...should be cool by then.
We're about 45 miles south of Raleigh, 90 miles from Wilmington

For those of you who have not been w/o power (hey we got ice storms in atlanta), fill up your bathtubs and sinks and all containers/buckets, etc.,, as you can pour water directly into the toilet bowl and it will flush. Do so after every use. It works.
And you can fill those kid's pools with water to use for this purpose also.

9pm by radar image Looks like we are in the middle of what is left of hanna. Steady rain. Still no wind here. I put the horses in around 7 and while there was plenty of standing water in the fields the pond wasn't over it's bank and the stream hadn't washed away the road to the bottom barn yet.

As the "bulk" of Hanna just seems to be coming ashore I'm sure things will get tense for a while but overall she seems pretty managable *knock on wood*
I'm leaving my house in 1.5 hours then have a 9.5 hour drive ahead of me (we will be stopping for gas and food so that'll probably be closer to a 10.5 or even 11 hour drive but that's ok by me).
Seems I'll be driving right into a good bit of what you guys are already dealing with and probably more of that "bulk" based on the speed they say she's carrying.
Here's hoping Sunday is a nice one :D It's the first Steeler game of the season and we already have plans to spend all day inside watching it  SO! I need it to be nice because I want to sit outside and leave the men to their football
I appreciate the updates from you guys. I know you aren't doing it for my benefit in the least but it sure is nice to know what is happening since I've never been in a TS before. Extra thanks for that!! :)

It is raining steady and somewhat harder here. I ran out to take a peek and the wind as of right now is stiff breeze[ I think Greg Fischel said currently 18 mph gust] but not howling. I am just not looking forward to the 60 mph gust we are to have at daybreak. We will have had enough rain by then to make it wet enough to soften the tree roots.

Almost 8 a.m. Light rain, but over 5" in the rain gauge. Strong winds, but not horrible. Everything looks ok, but haven't checked the pasture yet. Need at least one more cup of coffee before I face that.
We should be done with everything in about 2 hours by the looks of the radar.

Ha. Tropical storms are funny. I forgot and left my water glass balanced on the edge of one of the porch columns last night, as I was bringing in the porch furniture. It's still right where I left it.
But down by my mailbox, there's a big old tree down right across the road.:( Good thing that's not our only means of egress!:D
It's all pretty much over with here. I haven't walked the entire farm yet, but the most excitement I've had out of the whole thing was from the little paint horse who, on sight of me, took off from the far pasture on one of those "Mommmmeeeee!" gallops, straight for me, ending in the predictable sliding stop and mud spray. He gets a little excited over storms - I think it's the influence of those neurotic border collies.
I hope everyone else fared as well.

Way up here on the eastern shore of Virginia we had buckets of rain 5pm-7pm last night, just from the first Hannah band. Glad I got everything done before I went in to work. This morning was windy but a break in the rain so that I could take my time and get everybody fed, cleaned, work on my drainage ditches, etc. Now the winds are really picking up and more bands coming through. We are under a tornado watch until 1pm and I don't think the eye is "due" here before 2pm this afternoon.
It's hot and muggy and buggy but the wind is keeping the flies quiet for now. Hope everyone else is doing okay - and Virginians don't take for granted - the storm is still coming!

The lastest local reports say the heaviest rain is on the west side of the storm. So Pr. Wm County and west to the Blue Ridge is expected to be hammered. The worst of it from around noon until 9 p.m. Farmville, VA has already had over 6" as of a few hours ago. Lastest rainfall potential for Prince Wm County and west is 3-8".
J Swan -- I have a lot of flood plain too (I am surrounded by a moat of two good sized creeks w/ a pond as well) so I always have to prepared ahead for these kind of event. Only two of my 8 pastures are affected by flooding, so I got one group of horses up to high ground this a.m. The other group of four is still out, but I can get them in the barn quickly if I see creek flooding is threatening to take some fencing down, as it has ocassionally in the past.
When my bridge into the farm goes underwater, there's no way in or out, so I just hunker down with the critters.
We sure need the rain, but not this much, this fast.

J Swan, most of it came during the night. I got up a couple of times and it was pouring hard, next time nothing. Still raining, and our power has been off and on all morning.
My big pasture is seriously flooded, looks like a big lake. It should be stopping here in an hour or so. No trees down that I can see, but lots of little branches and one or two big ones. No big deal.

I'm in Northern MD, and it started off raining lightly this morning, and has gotten quite steady within the past hour. However, it is very warm. My horses are outside now and quite happily munching grass in the rain, ignoring the field shelter. If the wind picks up I will bring them in. I'm also going to fill up my bathtub in case we lose power. Hope those in low lying areas closer to the storm get through this with no big problems!!

Fairfax, VA:
Eye has passed and there is flooding everywhere it can flood -- which means a lot of roads are out. Wind has gusted at max to 31 mph, which isn't even equal to some of the storms we've had here.
Interesting to note is the absence of lightning and thunder. I've heard nada.
Only 66* as well! Great riding weather for outside if it weren't raining :D
I rate Hanna a 3 on a scale of 1 to 10 for boredom and lack of threat. She's really weak and not a big deal. Good thing about Hanna is the rain. We all need it on the East Coast.

Yup, A LOT of rain. I just got soaked to the bone trying to divert the water in my ring, it seems to shift the sand & rubber around so much (especially on the outside track), that it's starting to make tunnels :(.
I was almost thinking, help, I need sandbags for my sandring to keep the sand in and had to laugh at the thought, eventhough in reality it isn't funny.

A little late to the party.. but we got a good bit of rain. the stream and pond were well over their banks and had flooded most of the back woods. Road to the bottom barn was washed out. No trees down. Fences all intact. This AM when I went to turn horses out, Mir was curled up in a ball sleeping soundly in her nice dry bedding. Ack, this storm just got more serious for me (southern NJ). I came into the kitchen and all my cats were sitting in a circle, surrounding a spot on the floor. It was surreal until I realized what they were fascinated by - drops of water from my ROOF!
Pot in place, here's hoping it doesn't get any worse until I can get my (retired but still knowlegeable) contractor Dad out here tomorrow to tell me what needs to be done.
Please tell me my 20 yo house doesn't need a new roof, that is NOT in the budget this fall!
To make horse related, I'm watching the downpour carefully, trying to pick a moment to dash out to feed. So far, no good moments have appeared!

Holy hells bells people!!!!
I just got back from vaca about an hour and a half ago, had no internet and an interesting trip so I never drove around to snag some wireless. Seems Hanna was sorta uneventful but lemme tell ya...from someone who has never encountered a tropical storm before--- I will NEVER encounter a hurricane. thank you very much.
I drove through the entire state of VA with the winds blowing my car all over the freaking highway. The rain coming down so hard I couldn't even see my wipers!! I kept reminding myself it was only a TS! I was surprised at the lack of thunder/lightening etc as well. Was was more surprising or maybe really horrifying was the people doing 85+ mph in that weather! Of course several of them ended up in the trees and other random places and although I wished the best for the health I did have to laugh at the stupidity of it all.
The OBX got NOTTA! They got a little rain I guess but the folks there said it wasn't more than heavy storm. The wind however remained. I couldn't get out of my car. My car was rockin' and rollin' while parked in the grocery store parking lot etc. It was totally crazy. The wind was sooo intense. I got there about 12:30 PM. At 4 PM when I was finally cleared to drive up the beach and go to my beach house the wind was settling and by 5 PM when we were unpacked and ready to chill for the week the wind was gone, the temps were warmer (humidity was still there though) and we got to witness the most beautiful sunset! We didn't have a good one like that the rest of the week.
How did everyone else do? How is everyone's 4 legged critters?
Dare I even look into the destruction Ike is producing at this hour?? I'm so afraid :( I'm very thankful he went through the gulf and not up the east coast but oh man do I feel for those having to deal with him :(
