View Full Version : Out of curiosity... what's your horses breed?

Not that breed really matters much- it's the heart and partnership results that matter more than bloodlines in any and every sport. Just curious as to what everyone rides and if there is a specific reason. I know there is a majority of arabs out there, which I understand are more successful as a breed than other breeds as a group. But what makes your horse the horse for you and this sport?
I'll start!
Mine are Standardbreds (3 of these) and a Thoroughbred. Only one if these is currently in competition, though I am looking at adding my youngster to this as well. I got one from a racehorse rescue (though he was only coming off the track as an unsuccessful racehorse- various reasons- and spoiled his whole life!), got in contact with the previous owners, and got two more as they came off the track. The TB was also given when my previous barn's roof collapsed (no injuries, thank God!) and the owner had no where else to take him/ no extra $ to board him elsewhere. Why I ride my STB endurance- he seems to LOVE it, has the worlds biggest heart and stride, and- though sometimes psychotic- will do most anything for me, including protect me from snakes! :)
(Need to put pic up, but am unsure how to do it in here! He is the jumper in the profile picture, though!)

I ride a PMU. I got him when he was 18 months old. He is a 16 hand TB/QH/Perch cross. While he looks TB, he has the mind of the Percheron/QH. Because I got him so young, we are so bonded and I have to say, he totally reads my mind...sometimes way too much.
He also has a built in GPS system. I can get totally, totally lost on the trail and he will find the way back to the trailer no.matter.what! It is uncanny, he'll even trail blaze if he has to get back to the trailer.
And, the funny thing is, he'll be going along and as soon as it pops in my head "I'm lost," (I don't say anything or do anything except think..."Oops, I'm lost?"), he'll practically rip the reins out of my hands and head home.
I'm used to TBs all my life and this guy is as smart as a whip.

Breeding Stock Paint here.. might as well call her a QH though.
BUT, we're trail riders, NOT endurance folks. While maresie looooves trail, I think the poor thing would keel over if I ever did an endurance event with her. She's 15hh and 1200lbs+, with a size 82 blanket. She's a big girl.. not designed for all day riding. ;)

Total of four horses on this farm.
A Missouri Fox Trotter mare is my favorite and the horse I ride the most.
QH/Morgan cross gelding is the second best ride here.
2 old QH mares, retired working cow horses, get ridden by guests if we get a group of three or four riders together.

I'm mainly a trail rider, but hope to try a CTR at some point (it's been a goal for about a year now, but we haven't been able to get everything together for the last 2 we could have attended.)
My mount of choice is my wonderful golden butterbutt poneh. I love my Haflinger. Lots! Best lil trail poneh I've ever had.

I have a 21 year old morab. I would recommend the breed to anyone because they are a very strong breed and VERY smart! Cherish may be 21, but she sure doesn't act like it
I mostly ride for pleasure and trail riding.

I don't endurance ride - mainly a trail/arena rider here. But, I have a POA mare who is the most willing partner..
She's not spooky, will go through anything I ask, puts all her trust in me and like wise.

I actively compete in endurance (50 and 75 miles) on a Tennessee Walker gelding. My up and coming prospect is a 3 yr old McCurdy Plantation horse, I have high hopes for her! I've owned/trained/helped market several and they're really athletic, good minded horses.

I have a QH gelding, a Mustang mare and a TB gelding.
I don't do endurance but would one day like to do CTRs. my QH and my TB are my riding horses and can go for several hours. If i have someone riding with me(like my dad) they get put on the TB as the TB is less likely to pull crap on them and know he can get away with it, my QH is great for me but if its anyone else he does what he can not to do it(nothing dangerous though!) and i love him to bits and he has his forever home with me
my mare would probably be great for endurance as she can be doing this really long strided trot and my other two are cantering just to keep up. but she's not trained to ride and i don't really feel like training her she just my friend and keeps the boys in line for me.

I have three horses right now. My daughters old grade qh gelding, probably a closet appy , he's 27 or 28 now. My 24 yr bay arabian gelding and my 13 yr old fjordX.
All are fantastic trail horses. The arab would be ok for endurance but while he is super calm on the trail, all the fast horses would drive him nuts. The qh is good and quiet, but slooowww unless you really make him walk on out. Has done his job wonderfully for us for over 10 years. The fjordX I have had for 5 years now. I bought him when my arab was lame and on pasture rest for a year. He'd been packed on and backed some, but extremely green and 8 yrs old. His dad was a maybe 14h fjord and mom a 16.1h solid bay appy mare. Now we dabble in dressage, fantasic horse on the trail and on cattle...wow what a blast. We even tried a show similar to the Extreme Cowboy race and did very well.
The fjordx would surprise people for endurance. He goes all day, can trot for miles with several trot gears. Canter is improving, but trotting is his comfort gait. Very fast deliberate walk. I would love to do a CTR with the fjordX, and I do competive trail obstacle rides when I can.
Enjoy.

I mostly trail ride. I have a 1/2 arab pinto that I have been riding for quite a while. She is busy with a new foal this year, so I'm now riding a 1/2 warmblood mare out of the 1/2 arab. Next year, I will be starting the 1/2 warmbloods filly on the trails. The filly is 1/2 Welsh.

We're trail riders, but some of our rides are 30-35 miles. I ride a Paso Fino and my husband a TWH. My Paso Fino never looks tired, even after a ride she looks as fresh as when she started.

My name says it all. I would never have anything but a pure bred Arabian. Both of mine are 20 years old and I bought both as 2 year olds. The grey was to be my endurabce horse, but I got sick. We;'ve done many miiles of trails. The black loves dressage and does trails too. Both have won robbons in shows in everything from working cow to WP.

We are trailriders. My current riding horse is a TWH. I also have a QH (out of commission due to an injury at the moment) who I ride trail and do dressage with, and an OTTB (retired).
My hubby has a mutantly large (17.1 hands) American Spotted Saddle Horse.
I actually think my TWH might be good for endurance. He never seems to tire, is game for anything, forward without being hot, sure of foot and when we're done with a ride seems to be much less sweaty and tired than all the other horses. But when does everyone find the time???

Endurance rider wannabe with little hope of ever doing more than a LD--but lots and lots of trail riding. Heese are a racking mare and a walking gelding. They go out a lot with a foxtrotter. That's a three ring circus, I tell you.

I mostly trail ride but am getting back into the jumper scene with my TB. However, for trail riding I have my good ol' Woodrow who is 21 years young. He's a quarter horse/tennesse walker cross and a professional trail horse by occupation. I also have a mustang mare who isn't a great trail horse (go figure) but okay. She's a better jumper actually; the little twerp.

A SHAGYA ARABIAN, a breed, that has been bred for over 200 years to be the ideal riding
type horse.
It was no fluke that the owner of HUNGARES, (the WEG 100 mile endurance champion in seven hours) won this race with not that much conditioning. He went to Babolna stud in Hungary--walked into the herd of geldings, and without much ceremony picked out
two and the rest is history!
The Shagya is a very rare breed, but slowly the numbers are increasing. We need new breeders and if you have the ability to breed horses or want to add size, substance and a very good brain to your Arabian mare--breed to a Shagya stallion.
Believe me when I say--they are truly an amazing breed! Come to my farm and see
for yourself!

I mostly trail ride and take dressage lessons (good for everyone!). I have my big QH, Baloo. Well, I guess he's technically a paint. Grade, I have no idea of his lineage.
I am working on getting him in shape for next year to do some 15 mile rides with a friend. He's very out of shape right now, but just a few months into having him now he's showing improvement already and building muscle and tone.

Pete is a grade QH/solid Paint X. Nothing special about him, but to me, he's my world right now!
We don't work so well together currently, but we've only been together for just over a month. He tests me at every turn and he bunny hopped(small rear up) on my yesterday when I asked him to cross a stream alone he'd crossed once previous with a group.
I feel a Loyalty to him that my BO/Trainer doesn't understand, but then I am that way to any animal I rescue. Pete came from an Auction house.

Dabble in endurance.
Two Arabs-gelding and mare. Mare is the competition horse. Much more sensible and preservation minded (only after mile 15 does that kick in).
Gelding is the spare trail horse. He's only done one LD when he was 20 and was a very difficult ride for my friend so that was the end of that. Tried to blast the entire time and does not like riding alone. Big chicken.
Congrats Flora! Saw that ad when I got my Endurance News. Great pic! The No Frills was my first 50 and a real ballbuster. I finished but I was in worse shape than my horse (concussion). Not interested in doing that one again anytime soon.

11 year old Morab.
I do not think I have said this, but he is my first horse. I got him when he was 5. (Yeah, do the math. I have not been riding long)
He is not perfect, but he is perfect FOR ME. He can do distance riding, and then do an open house for kids, then do a parade, then do some therapeutic work, then be a total crazy animal bucking and farting out in the pasture.
His ground manners are excellent, but I take no credit. The best decision I ever made with him was to put 90 days on him when I first got him, to get him tuned up and tuned in.
Gothedistance- that is a GREAT picture! You must be thrilled! A friend of mine rides out there a lot with a Rocky Mtn Arab cross named Zephyr.

OK, the only way I can figure to put a pic of us up is through my profile pic. This is us on 2nd half of a ride in IN from 2 years ago- actually our first LD. (Right before a major pasture accident, which put us off until this year for competing again!) He hasn't changed much- except in age.
Edited to add:
This is going really well! It's always fun to find out what everyone finds best about their best trail partners!

The QH is retired, and the ASB is semi-retired. The 2 TWH's are the favorite trail bunnies. We don't really do endurance. Every once in a while we'll do an LD ride, but we are NOT ambitious, just out for a good ride with other horsey people.

I have one former hunter/dressage horse, 18 yo, Hanoverian/QH. She's a doll, and loves to trail ride as long as there's company (the more company the happier she is). She loves to jump but her legs aren't up to it anymore, except a little log or crossrail now and then. She's spooky and a little excitable sometimes, but my husband rides her and it doesn't scare him, so they make a great team.
And I have a Morgan, former Amish horse, 14 yo. She'll trail ride all day through anything, alone or in company (the latter after much practice!). She's a great ride - comfortable, enthusiastic, willing, and pretty spookless. She drives, too, of course, and can do a crazy-fast trot like a Standardbred if you want (we rarely want!!). She can be a little nervous if she's not sure what's going on, but with lots of miles she's got the hang of what goes on, and is now generally quite mellow.
We trail ride for fun, typically 3-6 mile rides at a relaxed pace.

I ride a Davenport Arab... I love him. The most well behaved stallion I've ever worked with... and yes we have our moments and we play big boy but over all A+ for effort and behavior and of course smashing good looks. I used to race endurance, went to college and now am trying to get back into it... I don't think its his forte so I'll probably switch to something else with an emphasis on long rides now and a again for cardio workouts.
I have no clue how to post pictures... soooo yeah no pictures here for the moment. oh wait a second let me try this...

I only have one horse at present. She is a 13yo TB mare. She started her riding life as a show hunter. She currently earns her keep as my "old lady horse". We dabble in lots of different disciplines from hunter stuff, dressage, games, trail riding. She is very good mannered and pretty sensible although occasionally she will have a TB moment. I ride her in an English Hackamore in my hunter lessons as well as on the trail. We like to do B&B weekends or camping with friends and their horses'.

these days i only do trails but trail ride a lot.
my favorite is a 14.0 h appy (poa?) that i got and started when she was three, four years ago. was a very difficult lady to begin with but not now...she's my idea of heaven.
i feel blessed to have such a steady, sensible, willing, gentle mare to ride into my last sunset. also have a paso who trots, funny funny boy and into everything. hot to ride if with other horses but wonderful alone.
