My thoughts exactly....these girls can do WHATEVER they wanna do. Like someone said yesterday, this is no Hunter Fashion Show. This is the OLYMPICS!

Blah. And at the Olympics, it's formal attire! lol
Those nasty hair peeps do NOT look very formal to me! hahahaha

So, by my calculations, only Canada can pass us? Is that you what you have?

Madeline
Aug. 18, 2008, 10:31 AM
You can damn well know (can we swear here?) that I'd have MY ponytail out! You don't see the horses' tails in hairnets, now do you?;)

Me too! I'd grow my hair so I could have one and piss off the turnout freaks.

If Ian and Beezie both go clear we (CAN) are at 20 and you (US) are at 24 yes?

I think if Ian goes clear, you would be at 20. If Beezie goes clear, we would be at 16.

Yeah, if Ian is clear, we will be tied. Then as long as Beezie has fewer than 8, we can still be on top. That's what I'm seeing anyway.

If Ian and Beezie both go clear we (CAN) are at 20 and you (US) are at 24 yes?

No, US would win because we would drop Will's 8 faults. If Ian goes clear, Beezie needs to do well. If he doesn't do well, I think Beezie can do whatever she wants.

So...calculating....if beezie goes clear, US wins. If Beezie has one rail, we jump off. If Beezie has anything else, we get silver?

The way I am reading the scores, if Beezie has 4, then US and Canada will be tied and go to a jumpoff.

But 12 + 13 is 25, which is one more than the US has now. And US won't be more than 24, no matter what Beezie does.

nomorecold
Aug. 18, 2008, 10:44 AM
The way I am reading the scores, if Beezie has 4, then US and Canada will be tied and go to a jumpoff.

That's what I have. In reality though, the best the Swiss can hope (unless Beezie is a disaster) for now is bronze because it is impossible for them to pass us They HAVE to count 13 faults for today no matter what.

I may be rooting for US, but Ian Miller is a GOD!

HE IS! I have worshipped him since I was a little kid, was fortunate to ride out of his barn and could not want this more for anyone on earth. He is a master horseman and my absolute hero.

For those that aren't aware, Ian lost his wife earlier this year so to be able to go out there and do this makes me even respect him more.

Russel looked very tired to me :(

Russel has looked unprepared throughout this whole event IMO... and apparently there has been some tension between NS and team managers. Such a shame, but GB did well I think with what they had to work with in the end - looking forward to seeing Ben Maher in the individuals.

This is just plain torture. I kept yelling at the computer after Beezie "WHERE did she get 4 faults!" I want so badly for her to do well. I worked for her and John as a groom...18 years ago.

Ok, so here are my questions...
Jump off -- does time count as in a normal jump off? Or is time just a tie-breaker? As in, if we all have the same # of faults then the fastest time wins?

ponyjumper4
Aug. 18, 2008, 11:08 AM
Yes, quite often. There was one at Athens I think.

Yes, as I mentioned before, we jumped off with Switzerland I believe for silver in Athens. They conceded as they new they couldn't catch our time.

I assume this is like a regular jump-off, only there are three scores added together. Lowest faults trumps fastest time. However, if they have same faults then they look at time.

I think it is the same as a regular Nations Cup. Combination of faults and time.

Aside from the fact that this is the Team jumpoff and doesn't affect the individual standings, Mclain is currently in a 4 way tie for 2nd in the individual standings.

But they start over with 0 penalties for the actual individual finals.

I think it's great that there are so many older riders on the US and Canadian team. Everyone keeps talking about how Europe is breeding better showjumpers and possibly more well-rounded, competitive riders, while America's breeding and rider development lags behind. Well, here we've proven we're still doing something right. What worries me about the age of our teams (US and Canadian) is the absence of new, younger blood. It would be ideal to introduce younger riders ready for this level of competition while there are still very experienced members on the team. Just my opinion... someone else may have a more educated thought on the subject.

I'm not worried. We (CANADA anyways)have them coming up. In eventing we have a GREAT crop of youngsters with Jessie Phoenix and Waylon Roberts leading the way. Waylon could end up in the Jumpers as well as he has trained with the Whittakers (and lets face it, dressage hasn't been his forte). Then there is Erin Ballard, she will get there I'm sure. Eric is young and Ian has said he isn't going anywhere while he can still compete at this level. I think our future looks very bright. If our little country can keep them coming I'm sure the US has ten times the amount of young talent.

Yeah, I guess you're right (I'm Canadian too :D ... and American!!). It just seems like the other equestrian disciplines have these amazing young riders ready to take on the Olympics, and with all of the drama over hunters and the showing system and judging in America, I guess it just leads to paranoia about the state of h/j and therefore showjumping in America and what it's producing in comparison to abroad. Maybe it's just me!

That said, Helena Lundback's horse (Sweden) would have been far better off doing that course without her. Perhaps it's harsh or ignorant of me to say, but how did she get into the Olympics? I haven't seen her go before, maybe she had better rounds, but my first thought was Wow, I bet she pisses off a lot of horses. The loose hair was the least of her troubles.

Eric was amazing. Love love love Eric.

Too bad about Nick Skelton... not the best ride by him, and Russell seemed to be struggling.

I'm in no position to say a thing about Meredith Michaels-Beerbaum, but her rein length is driving me CRAZY!!!!!

I've seen HL quite a bit in the FEI stuff from Europe and I have seen her ride better. Check some of the results on COTH...she belonged there more than many others I saw. I am WAY over hunter hair and you see the loose hair pretty regularly from the Europeans so I can't get too excited about that. I have been known to sport the pony tail at schooling shows now and then but I also do appreciate good turnout for both horse and rider so I think if I made it to that level I would splurge on a hairnet.

Russell is always hit or miss but man do I love that horse! I have always liked Nick since I was a kid and tend to like all of his horses too (remember Apollo?).

MMB and I have the long rein thing in common and I guess that is where it stops! You would hate me at a schooling show...pony tail flying with my hands in my lap!!

I see what you are saying about the H/J system here in NA though. We absolutely do things differently but I think maybe the experience our riders have was the difference today. I would like to see 1/4 youth and 3/4 experience (nice way of saying old) on the team in a perfect world.

I just went and rewatched his ride.

Yep, they didn't even come close to falling. The rail came down between the horse's legs but didn't trip him up or anything.

The photos made it look far worse than it was.

Feel badly for that AZE rider who fell off his chestnut and had to be half carried out of the arena. He was staggering and looked like he had no clue where he was or what day it was.

Finally went back and watched the replay to see the medal ceremony. (They were just marching into the stadium for the awards when I had to leave to meet the vet this AM) The riders from all three teams looked thrilled and excited. Some of my favorite moments included one of the Norwegians checking out his medal and showing it to the person next to him on the stand, Authentic's groom snapping photos (there is a great photo of that on COTH as well) and the riders apparently conversing about what order they were going to ride out on for the gallop (they reminded me of kids in a hunter teams class).

(note - maybe I'm late to the party, but figured out tonite that if you are viewing something that's not live in Enhanced mode you can fast forward and backward with the slider so you can go to different parts)
