OK, according to the way they are posting the results, there might be an error in what is implied by which scores count. It says # = scores not to count for team medal, but that can't be right as the results list is also ranking the team placings including those scores.

That third jump does look like it is set as a distance question, but some of the riders just don't seem to be dealing successfully with it. Philip's ride was good, though -- I would just call his rails "unlucky." The horse wasn't flat, and had a good rhythm and spot. To me, Connaught didn't look noticeably tired (other than having the rails).
Connaught is usually a HUGE jumping horse, he outclasses most event show jumpers. He wasn't as lofty as I've seen him in the past - I think he was a bit tired.

I wonder if this is why Phillip didn't push Connaught for the first round. Maybe he was saving him for the jump off? ...at least that is what I would like to believe. :)

That would weight it too heavily towards SJing. Wouldn't be right.
It is confusing though, think of it like a 1st round and a jump off in regular showjumping.

Hey, a question: I just can't get a feel for how this is organized. They've already determined whose scores do or don't count toward the team medals? Wouldn't you think they'd wait for the final totals before identifying the top three on each team? Why do you suppose they've done it this way? They don't identify which scores will count in the FINAL team standings until after it is over. But after each phase they calculate the "current" team standings, based on the "best 3 scores" on the team at that point. The ones that aren't counted in THAT subtotal get the **.
But after the next phase, they re calculate who the "best 3" on each team are. So a rider that has a ** after dressage might not have a ** after cross country. And vice versa. And a rider that has a ** after cross country might "count" after show jumping, if one of the team riders that did "count" after cross country has a bad show jumping round.

OK, I understand that reasoning, although I'm not sure I agree with it. After all, they're going to increase the height of stadium for the individual rounds. Similar change in emphasis, although not in terms of relative weight.

Are the individual stadium penalties added to the current final scores (dressage + x-c + team stadium round + individual stadium round)?
Or do they drop any penalties incurred in the team stadium round and determine the individual medals based on dressage + x-c + individual stadium (team stadium not counted)?
