It was very "glossy"....I called a girlfriend of mine that is currently grooming for a jumper out by Spuce Meadows that our dear friend Eric (we had a nickname for him but I won't mention it on here) had his own little infomercial. (Aka, a little pre-press adverstising.) I'm sure he'll put in a good round however. Our SJ riders usually do pretty well.

A CAN rider I'm looking forward to seeing go is Selena. Her Mom is an interesting lady, I've never met Selena but I'm sure she'll put in an accurate ride. :)

THANK YOU NBC!! Wow, what a privilege to watch all those tests, from opening canter to post-ride chat w/ coach! The clarity and quality of the live feed was amazing. So cool to hear Nigel or Brian, just like we do here at US events.

Is anyone else wondering about the scores?? VERY low for some of those tests! I didn't get to see more than 6 or 7 rides, but I was quite surprised. The judges' booths seem to freak out a lot of horses... saddlebred antics, not going NEAR the corners at C, lots of tension. Many missed changes, 4-beat canters, on-the-forehandness. And the centerlines, so crooked! (Thanks for the great camera angles NBC!) These weren't exactly "bad" tests, but given the recent critical judging (at FH, Jersey, Rolex, etc for the last 2-3 yrs) I expected scores in the 60s+. Instead, they were low 50s!

I don't want to be too harsh on these riders, but I swear the judges are scoring a good 10pts better than usual. Agree/disagree? Maybe it will all even out in the end... with judging like this, if Becky can pull off a good test Comet could be in the 20s!

1. Interesting variety of salutes
2. One rider, male, had a black eye
3. One tail braided, several pulled and several natural
4. 2 full cheek snaffles, few double bridles
5. Some had light gloves, some had black
6. One male had a ribbon hanging down from his derby in back
7. Some cream breeches, most white
8. 1 dropped noseband, most flash, few double bridles
9. Billets hanging down like teats on a cow, not tucked in
10. Some riders/grooms immediately attended to the comfort of the horse, loosen girth, run up stirrups, etc.....
11. Some riders/grooms could not be bothered, just walked the horse off, poor horse

Not the same thing at all....closer to dropping a rail for a jumper but even then not really the same thing. His test was EXTREMLY nice....and that penalty hurts especially when the scores will be as close as they are going to be. But in dressage, you can flub a movement and it only effects the score for that movement.....and a test score can still be very competitive even with an error if the quality is there.

At the end of the day...this is eventing....the dressage score is just the begining. And given what is being said about the xc course....this competition is NOT going to won on the dressage score....xc and stadium are going to be very influential in the outcome. They just need to be in striking distance. I think any of the riders who break 50 will have a shot and you will see a lot of movement at the end of the day.

It is only -2 points on any movement that has an error. If the rest of the test is flawless, -2 will bump them down only a small amount in the overall percentage.

I listened to Rebecca Farms with no problems, but you tube video takes an hour to download ten minutes. I think I'm shafted.

USA advertises that equestrian will be part of their programming from 2 am to 2 pm tomorrow. Any ideas how that will run? I mean, does NBC have it broken down into smaller time segments? I will record, I guess, but 12 hours seems like a lot.

Snapdragon
Aug. 8, 2008, 10:41 PM
Each movement of the dressage test is scored individually (0 being abyssmal and 10 being fantabulous). If one movement is screwed up and gets a low score, it's only for that one movement. All the other parts can still have good scores. If you go "off course," 2 points are deducted from the score from each judge.

US military regulations or Brazilian military regulations, or is there a regulations in the rules of eventing?

Interesting oddities nature - I noticed some of those also, though I didn't get to watch as many rides so far.

Interesting differences in how everything is done by different riders.

Was out this evening, logged in when I came back & looked at the Eventing "Long Rewind". It was just a zoom into Happy Valley followed by a looong still shot of an empty arena. GRRRR! The rest of the live videos seem to work - why aren't the rest of the tests being shown? - and who wants to see sabre or badminton (with shuttlecocks not horses) anyway?

To render a military salute, you have to be in military attire or police attire. The Brazilian rider was not in uniform.

mademoiselle
Aug. 9, 2008, 12:41 AM
I read somewhere that the riders were not allowed to compete in their military outfits by the chinese. I think many of them who are used to ride with a uniform and salute the military way are having troubles to adapt:lol::lol::lol:

Easy there, badger. My heart beats for riding just as it does for fencing. I'm an epeeist and think sabre is for brute without good footwork but I still watch just as rampantly as I do eventing...well almost. I don't try to make the fencers touches for them like I try to balance the riders horses for them. Armchair quarterbacks have nothing on me!

I have laid out here the Saturday schedule based on what I could find from multiple sources. I'm not sure you can make it out here (as I copied/pasted from a spreadsheet), but the info from left to right is start and end times for Central and Eastern, description, and network/online.

Actually, I laid out ALL the equestrian schedule on an excel file and a .pdf -- I'm not even sure why! HA! If anyone wants it, send me a PM with your email address....

Where the network has multiple sports coverage, I don't think there is any way to find out more specific times, and I actually buy media for a living!

the australians are just in a totally other league than any other team there!! however it is truly fantastic that the US team has been able to hold their own in dressage although the best it yet to come from a lot of countries other than AUS.

also, besides lucinda and brit's test, the scores are so close that placings at this point are so insignificant thinking ahead to the amount of time penalties that will come about from XC.

Did you click on the "Enhanced player" Button? that makes the video size much larger. Also, if you're on a Windows, on the bottom right corner you can change the video size, increase it from 100% to about 125%.

If you're in the "enlarged video" you click "commentary" next to the button that would send you back to standard view.

Of course we should thank NBC. Their CEO has a voting seat on the IOC board. This is part of how the IOC justifies keeping sports in the Olympics as well as giving NBC exclusivity (hence why they also agreed to broadcast Rolex). So, by us watching we show the IOC that there is a sufficient audience for retention of this sport.

Carol,
All the Order of Go for Dressage is here: http://results.beijing2008.cn/WRM/ENG/INF/EQ/C51CB/EQX003400.shtml#EQX003403

Karen goes at 6.58 am HK on Sunday or 6.58pm (18.58) EST SATURDAY - don't forget they're exactly 12 hours ahead of the East Coast. So you won't miss it after all.

Phillip Dutton goes at 9.13 and Mary King from the UK could alter all the standings with her last but one ride at 9.41. The last ride is at 9.48 - Jean Renard Adde, who must be gutted after Nicolas Touzaint's withdrawal. BTW anyone know the reason? Must have been pretty severe to also take out the team.

Then to install silverlight click on PLUG INS at the very bottom of the home page and then go the the blue box on the second page and follow instruction to download silverlight which enhances the videos.
To watch the equestrian events you must click videos on the home page in the navy tool box and then click Watch LIVE for those sports listed as currently live.

I'm trying to find the replay of the 2nd group -- the one that was live for us this morning. Anyone know where it is?

Thanks so much for leading us to the YouTube video of Becky's ride... not having cable and also a mac w/out intel means not much equestrian coverage for me. If there are anymore, let us know!

Injured his stifle...apparently got cast in his stall during the thunderstorm.

Is this in reference to the French horse?

I'm so sad. I've waited 4 long years to see Nic is that fantastic Gray.
close to tears here. 4 years is a long time. : (

I echo that Thank You! What a lovely ride. My TiVo managed to miss it this morning. Becky finally gets to wear the very long awaited scarlet. Couldn't happen to a better person!!!

My commentary stopped and the sound went out once. I had to close the window and reopen it to get it fixed.

But don't try it now since Karen is up next! ;)

Not often that I praise Karen, but she did a GREAT job with a green horse at this level. It could not have been any better IMO. That was some tactful educated riding.

Yup, she was good sport as always. Pretty good score considering...

I saw Karen, and then Sonja (Sonya?) the Australian. To me it looked like the Australian did better, but Karen had a higher score? It just seemed like Sonja was so much smoother.

Karen's flying changes were awesome. What a nice horse. I thought the horse to follow was more resistant in general and not as nice a mover.

The Irish horse looks like he's looking for the cross country fences!

If I were riding that Irish horse I'd be thanking God for the curb rein! I think he would've just climbed right up into the air on his hind legs without it.

Hmmmmm...I've rebooted/restarted too. When I am on the loading page, all I get are the little gray spinning circles. I wonder if their server has been swamped or something?

Do you see the commentary? They are having the cross country at a golf course???

"Cross Country will be held at the Bass River Golf Club to accommodate the 5700 meter course."

Did they actually set up the course ON the golf course??

They did it in Los Angeles...infact eventing almost did not happen because there was no place for the XC and at very considerable expence where they allowed to used a golf course in the end.

Are you kidding? This live feed is 10,000,000 times better than having it on tv!! They are actually showing ALL the competitors, and their FULL ride. If they put this on network tv, it would be BUTCHERED. They'd show maybe 10 seconds of the British team, spend 99% of the time interviewing the American riders' kindergarten teachers, and .05% of the time showing one American ride - and ONLY if the US team had a chance at a medal. Feh! on network television!

Not sure if you can get the live feed in the US, but CBC (canadian network) has live coverage that is working for me.

Guys, I don't know if this is any help to you, but there is a live feed in the BBC website - are you blocked from it? Try http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/olympics/ I'm watching a live feed on there. Just watched a Brazillian test after Sharon Hunt did a super test with Jasper.
