Just saw in my Entertainment Weekly (in a section about six Olympic sports you might not watch, but should) that USA will be airing Team Dressage on Sat. 8/9 from 2am -2pm. Thought this would be of interest to the eventers on this forum!

Ugh, I hate the way they schedule this stuff. 12 hours is a long time, and they bounce back and forth, those of us who are away all day don't have a prayer of catching it.

Well, this it true...but with Tivo or even a VCR, you can record them and just fast-foward through the commercials, etc! :D

In past years it has depended on how the competition goes, if something spectacular happens, good or bad, they will put it on at a more sensible time. If the USA wins or something happens to a US athlete, they will put it on during normal hours...maybe even on the parent network, the BIG channel everybody gets.

But if we are not spectacular and are not in contention for a medal, it's some channel half of America does not get at 3am and not published so you have to Tivo/DVR 6 to 8 hours of programming in hopes of 3 minutes of coverage narrated by somebody who does not know what they are talking about.

But ask me how I really feel.....

Actually, the "full schedual" was a list of mostly 6 to 8 hour blocks lumped in with multiple other smaller sports. No specific times. In the past I have taped these things only to find something spectacular did happen in another sport and bumped the equestrian coverage off the program.

Ever sit and skim 6 hours of VHS tape looking for a nugget of coverage only to get to the end and find nothing because it was bumped? Or see 3 minutes of CC with no ID on what you are seeing, just a recap of the medalists? BTDT and will not waste time with it this time around.

findeight
Aug. 4, 2008, 12:07 PM
Well, MOST of it will be available and it's the NBC FAMILY of channels including some not received by all systems and not included on various channel groupings purchased by consumers...like Oxygen for example. Certainly not ALL in HD as advertised as some of these channels are also not offered in HD on all systems.

There is no commitment to show anything in particular at any specific time during that big block of time and the network reserves the right to select what and when and on what channel as well as how much time to devote to it.

Perhaps they will get more specific as these events run and IF we medal, you bet we will see more. Maybe even know when ahead of time.

Otherwise, don't count on much.

Unfortunately I will be in hotels for some of the time these will run and I can either set the DVR for the 6 hour blocks and spend an hour skimming it or take a chance the hotel will have the correct channel available...and Oxygen is not likely to be one of them, the others are in some but not anywhere near all hotels.

I'll take the laptop and follow on COTH.

the way I read the olys tv schedule was

6-8pm Gymnastics and Equestrian.
Given that Gymnastics is a wildly popular sport, I'm hoping equestrian gets at least 15-20 minutes of coverage in the two hours..

ditto the 2am-2pm USA coverage..not only equestrian but a gazillion other sports are listed in that time slot so, again, I'm keeping my expectations low..and then maybe I'll be pleasantly surprised!

just my two cents,
virginia

findeight
Aug. 4, 2008, 12:52 PM
Yeah, well that CC on the 11th is not 2 hours worth but is shared with a gymnastics recap and highlights and all the other programming is, likewise, not exclusive but shared with other sports. Probably lucky to get 15 mins worth out of the 2 hours, especially if the USA did well in Gymnastics.

Just that I have gotten excited in the past and been disappointed at what, if anything, actually got on the air when they schedual like this.

All, those telecast times are shared with other sports, like a Gymnastics recap schedualed for the same 2 hours as the CC on the 11th. Wouldn't count on too much coverage, especially if the US medals in Gymnastics.

Yeah I am going to have to go home and wrestle with my DVR, Im sure that the scheduling is not going to be "Equestrian" so I am going to have to figure out how to get what I want...this might mean recording all the Olympic stuff.... :(

bookwormdude
Aug. 4, 2008, 02:48 PM
I do believe you are correct. The time slots are most likely split amongst several sports. While this makes sense for a twelve-hour block of time, the two-hour blocks are small enough that they could focus on one sport. Can't believe riding has to share space with gymnastics...that usually gets mainstream coverage on the broadcast station.

I too am madly copying movies, so I can get rid of them and make room for this. I do actually get Oxygen, but had to look it up to see if it was on my package, it is! I still have my tapes from '92 with NO COMMERCIALS. I think it cost $120. but I got every single ride for all disciplines. Then I have 2004 and there was quite a bit, but choppy. Seem to remember we got the x-c in real time, and basically complete. I do wish they would give us an uninterrupted block. The stuff on Oxygen says nothing but equestrian, so fingers crossed.

Can you imagine the reaction of the average American to 12 hours of dressage? I get a god chuckle just thinking about it, because lets be honest with ourselves, to anyone who doesn't know what they're looking at, watching dressage, especially on TV, is like watching paint dry after the first ride!

And before I run for my flame suit, I am on of the few people in the world (along with all of you!) who could HAPPILY sit and watch 12 hours of dressage!

Info from Team Britain's site below. It may be a long shot for US viewers in that there may be restrictions in place (because of NBC's coverage) but it's worth a try. Usually you can access the video clips summing up the days events

We have DirectTV so we have all the channels but I think I'm too late to get a DVR through them. Has anyone with satellite every gotten a DVR separate from their provider? Has anyone gotten a used one (like off of Craigslist?). I am really tempted. There is also a VCR/DVR at BJs that can be hooked up to cable/satellite feed and can record your video tapes. What should I do? (Our VCR is broken.)

area (EST) and the according to schedule you can catch some of the Eventing Dressage this evening starting at 6:30 p.m. WHich means it's 6:30 am the next day in HK. I believe Mark Todd is the first to go. I am still confused because then they have 2 sessions of dressage Saturday (7:15am-10:40am and 6:30pm 9:55pm EST) So does that mean Saturday's feed is just a repeat of the Fridays? Not even sure my pc at home is going to be able to use Sliverlight....At work it does ; )

they for the first time are listing the live streaming times. That is where they are overlapping. I would imagine the live streaming will be uninterrupted per event. But I am not sure even if you have high speed computer that you can capture it. I saw a list somewhere that there were going to be two sessions of x-c but now I cannot find it again!
