Available for free: 6 year old bay Thoroughbred gelding. Professionally trained in hunter/jumper (up to 2'9") and low level dressage. "A" level show records available. Sound (with yearly maintenance for arthritis) for light riding--i.e. 2-3 times a week. Can still be jumped. Is in first stages of anhidrosis and desperately needs a cooler climate. Comes with blankets, bridle and miscellaneous equipment.

Gosh, I am confused. A 6 yo with arthritis, OK for light riding' and 'still can jump'! WHY would you?

there is a medication you can give him to get him to be able to sweat again! but i agree i would think at best this one to be a light rider only if that.

Don't worry. I have screened out a tremendous number of people who would be unsuitable for him and his limitations. The vet, who is a specialist in lameness issues, assured me that light, low-level jumping would do no more damage than his normal self-excercising in the pasture. This horse does not know that there is anything wrong with him and is confused because he WANTS to have a job. The big question is whether or not he will make a full recovery from the sweating problem.

The gelding is in Texas. The ideal situation for him would be to go to someone who has a lot of horse experience, is a good English rider (i.e. truly appreciates a NICE horse) and who understands thoroughbreds. This horse would be wonderful for someone who has the ability to show in English or dressage, but doesn't have the time or inclination to ride more than two or three times a week. He needs someone who knows enough to maintain his training and improve on it. With time, he could become a fine horse to hack out on, but he is not ready for that, yet. I would love for him to stay in Texas, but the heat is not good for him and I want him to be safe.

This horse is still available. He is doing great in response to the injections for his arthritis. The vet is really pleased about that, but says that he needs to get out of the heat and humidity of Houston. He is a lovely horse, very responsive and maintains his training, so you don't have to start over from scratch if he is not worked regularly. He wants a job and needs a human with time for him. That is, of course, with the stipulation that he gets out of the heat and humidity. Surely there is a safe, loving home for him? He is gorgeous and sweet and comes trotting up to you when you enter the pasture...

Good afternoon. It sounds like you've got a great animal that would work well for me. I'm an experienced owner/rider that has taken a few years off due to a riding accident. I'm back in health again and dying to ride, but I'll be ramping up slowly and would like a horse that still needs some training so that we can grow together. I'm in NC, so this might not be as far into the cooler regions as he's needing to go and of course there would be the issue of getting him here in the first place. I'd love to see some pics if you happen to have any to post.

Is there anyone out there who wants a really great horse? I've had several offers that have not worked out, but am still hopeful that the right situation will materialize. Refereneces are required, though, so no bogus stories, please. This is an opportunity to have a very nice, "A" level horse...!!

After almost a year and a half, the gelding has found a safe home. Thank you to everyone who made genuine offers for him! And shame on those of you who made offers for him with bogus stories or absolutely no regard for his health. Although it was very tempting to just send him down the road, I didn't and am so glad. The fellow who has him has thoroughly researched the anhidrosis, done research on his arthritis and has plans for the gelding that take those into consideration. His new career is absolutely one that I never would have even guessed in my wildest, but he is happy and he will be well cared for. Wonders never cease. It was worth the wait.

How come the ONLY posts you have ever done on COTH are for free horses?

Maybe that's what she's looking for in a horse right now, trying to get back from her accident. Maybe not, but probably, IMHO.

OGM, its really nice to see how you waited to find the right person for this horse, and how you filtered the comers so well. I would like to know, if you can say, just what his new 'carreer' is, since you mentioned it, don't need to know who or where, but I am intrigued what situation or work is possible for him, if you don't mind!

Congrats, again.

My horse and I got lucky that the right person showed up just as I was really giving up hope. A year and a half is a long time, but it worked out and my horse is happy in his new career (which involves a western saddle, by the way). I seriously do send thanks to the COTH members who offered him a safe place, or PMed about unreliable people making offers. It got pretty hard to tell the legitimate vs illegitimate offers apart. Asking for references really made a difference, though... The private messages were incredibly helpful!
As for posts, check the old ones. The story is there.
