What are your opinions on Myler Bits? Do you use them, if so what kind? How do you find them in comparison to normal bits with nutcracker actions?

I have never used one, but have notuced that most people who have paid to go to one of their sessions end up buying one.

I have also observed that most of them come back to using some kind of snaffle.

I have two. One is their basic legal jointed snaffle. I can not say it is better or worse than any other bit I have owned for MOST horses.

The other bit has a low port and is not legal. However my very fussy gelding loves it and goes far better in it than in any other bit I have tried.

A Baucher might work on him but since I don't plan on showing him I haven't tried one

I"ve had my horse in a MB02 Myler Comfort eggbutt snaffle (with the roller barrel in the middle) for about 5 years now. I primarily do dressage, (showing 2nd, schooling 3rd), but I"ve also galloped and jumped using this bit.

He's got a fat tongue and lips and I used a french link when I first got him, but he's much more comfortable in the Myler.

I"ve been happy with it, too and for us, it's the only bit we need for everything we do.

They run REALLY big, so get a size smaller than the size you usually use in a regular snaffle.

That is probably the one I have that's legal . They are really good for horses who don't have a lot of extra room in their mouth.

I haven't found this to be the case. Yes, they measure big, but because of the way they fit you need the extra space (at least with the comfort barrel and similar styles). I would definitely not order a size smaller.

I've been using the myler d ring snaffles on my wb for 7 years and like them. My BO in FL had put him in a corkscrew snaffle when I bought him but I thought that was too much bit. My ottb mare had the most sensitive and responsive mouth and only needed a "happy mouth" plastic snaffle.
I'd like the try the herm sprenger d ring snaffle though.

they fit true to size- measure the mouth add 1/8" for each side (1/4" total) and that's the size you need and yes 99% of the time this means people are buying 1 size down from their current bit size in a non curved bit...

neVar, what about curved bits?

I am having the worst time with bits lately.

Never been to one of those sessions...or even read the book but I have two horses that go in the wide barrel comfort loose ring myler snaffle. One of those horses I switched out of a KK Ultra to the myler...she goes much much better in the myler. My other mare is happier in her KK Ultra...the myler was a little too much (yes ULTRA sensitive horse and seems to prefer a thicker bit). Like any other bit, some horses will like it better than others. I know a few other people that use the comfort snaffle and I tried one of their bits before I shelled out the money. I don't know about their other bits...but the basic wide barrel comfort snaffle is a very useful one (and legal to compete with).

We use a myler baucher for dressage competitions and a ported myler for jumping. Our TB seems to like them and is going much better since making the switch:). FWIW: they seemed to run big to me. Our huge WB went down a whole size in order to have it fit properly.

I have a young 6 y/o stallion that is scared to death of the loose ring comfort snaffle and a 3 y/o mare that loves the same bit. I think it just depends on the horse. it's a great concept if the horse likes it.

Thanks for the responses guys!

I've been researching them, and they have 'levels', apparentely level 1 is supposed to be for beginning horses who are just starting?

What 'level' bit would you use for a developed Level 1/2 dressage horse?

eta: which are legal for dressage?

There are some places that have a rental program and you can try the bit for a week or two before you decide to buy it.

www.horse-rider-etc.com (http://www.horse-rider-etc.com) is one place. If they don't have the bit you're looking for, they will get it for you.

edited to add: my BO rides in the eggbutt comfort mouth snaffle and that's a legal bit. The mouth piece in that one is only one type of metal.

Personally....I would disregard the levels. It has nothing to do with the horse's training. With ANY bit, you want to go with the least amount of bit. If your horse likes goes well in the level 1 comfort snaffle....then he likes and goes well in that snaffle regardless of his level of training. I believe that the level 1 comfort snaffle is the only one legal for dressage. My one mare who goes in that snaffle (loose ring) is doing 2nd level dressage work and just starting to compete in Prelim for eventing....she goes in the same bit for all three phases in eventing.
