In an effort to help feed hungry horse mouths across the country, the Chronicle has given the go-ahead to relax the advertising rules a bit in the Hay Forum ONLY.
Use this thread to post a FREE notice of hay you have available for sale. Please keep the wheeling and dealing specifics behind the scenes, so the thread doesn't get cluttered.
Make your post easy to read -- clearly post your (or the hay's ;)) location, amount available, type, etc. If you sell out, come on back to delete your post or edit it to reflect that it's no longer available.
We'll tweak the rules/concept if necessary if there are any problems and feel free to contact us with suggestions.
Thanks,

I have found several local farmers selling hay for $4 per bale (50 pound bales) and even 1000 pound round bales for around $35-$40 each. I found lots on Craig's List.

Anyone have hay that is soft - soft enough for an aged (but healthy) horse that has chewing problems due to some molars issues? I'm running out of what I have now and my source has no more.
She quids (wads up) her hay and it falls out, but she CAN get by on really nice soft hay. She grew up on Timothy-alfalfa mix, so there's ALSO the problem of her turning up her nose at hay that is less flavorful (i.e. bermuda). She's getting some dengie but I prefer also giving her some hay too so she has something to do when she's inside her stall.

ALFALFA (MI)-We bring our our own semi with loads of hay to the polo club in Sarasota, FL to feed our own horses and supply the club members. Due to the decrease in members at the club this winter, we are looking to get outside customers. Hay is northern MI hay, average 68-75 lbs, alfalfa. They have actually been weighed--these are not small little kick bales, they are big, heavy bales, tightly baled. One bale will feed about 12 horses a good sized lunch. Clean, green hay. You pickup/load. $15.50/bale. If you are interested purchasing, please PM me and tell me how many bales you would want. Hay will be coming until April/May. We can also get alf/grass and first cutting if you desire it. Please inquire.
Thanks,
Amy

Bought beautiful first and second cut hay from near Ludlow, Vermont, and had it shipped by a really nice trucker who helped unload. Call Kevin (the farmer) 802-773-6687 for pricing - costs will be influenced by how far you ship because the shipper bills by the hour. He didn't have a lot of second cut left but the first cut was nice, too.

I have 2 other horses that I have a nice supply of orchard grass for. I need about 20 bales and am willing to trade 20 bales of my nice orchard grass for. I live in Pennsylvania.

I saw this farm advertising on Craigslist and bought some hay myself. GREAT prices. They charge $3.50 per bale (square bale) while some of the private barns, etc. are selling it for $5 + per bale.

I bought a ton of really nice second cutting Eastern Oregon orchard grass hay on January 2nd. Now, I'm moving to a full care facility. It's beautiful hay without weeds, mold, dust, etc. I paid over $300 for a ton. The bales are about 120 lbs, so 17 to the ton. Plus shipping at $30. I have about 10 or so bales left, $17 each, cash and carry.
I'm located in Portland, OR.

I have connected with a hay guy who regularly runs semi loads between growers in PA and the Richmond area; he also grows some down there himself, I think. He is a very reliable source of high quality hay; a friend has been using him for YEARS. I have only recently been able to store a reasonable enough quantity for it to be worthwhile to use him/vice versa. I meet him on the road with my trailer as his truck won't fit in my driveway. I have gotten 3 beautiful loads from him at between $7-8 per bale, bales I've weighed are 50+lbs.
I will be meeting him in Marshall VA in the next 1 to 1-1/2 weeks for another batch. If you are anywhere between PA and Richmond on 81 north of us or 95 below us, he will meet you or deliver to you.
He will run loads to FL--has started to establish contacts in Wellington; didn't get as far as the second feed store when a pvt barn bought his whole truckload--not sure what his prices are that far south b/c of the freight cost.
Email me (no spaces: M C L E Q @ aol.com) or PM me for details.

First, we will have 3’ x 3’ x 8’ bales of alfalfa. This is really nice alfalfa. The bales weight 900 lbs. from the shipping scales. Each bale will cost $150.00. This would be equal to $10.00 per bale for 60 lb. bales! This price is picking it up at the ranch. It is string-baled hay. Cash only!
We have 5’ x 4’ round bales of blue stem. Again, this is very good hay. The weight is approximately 1,100 lbs. per bale. The price is $75.00 each, picking it up at the ranch. If you choose to buy five (5) bales or more, I will sell them for $70 per bale, picking it up at the ranch. I can get as many as you want in just a few days. It is string-baled. Cash only!
We have a few large round bales of costal 5’ x 6’, around 15 bales. They are around 1,400 lbs. These will be $95.00 per bale. I cannot replace them at this point and there are just a few so first come first serve on these bales. Price is picking it up at the ranch. Cash only!

I have a mostly orchard grass field that is going to be baled tomorrow or the next day (July 6-7). This is good quality hay (1st cutting orchard) - my neighbor who raises Hanoverians bought the perimeter cutting. I will sell it for $2/bale if you come pick it up out of the field once it is baled. Should yield about 250 bales. Call 703-505-7470 or e-mail secondfiddlefarm@gmail.com. Thanks!

we do NOT grow or sell teff !!
Didn't you used to sell teff? If so, may I ask why you stopped? I just picked some hay up locally (in Ocala) and noticed they were starting to sell teff. I've never used it and I'm curious about it.
If you get a load request of O/A or T/A together for Ocala and need another person to go in on it, then PM me, I'm usually needing hay.

First, a large thank you to COTH for putting up this Hay Thread!:)
Here's a link to our website:
http://www.floridahaynow.com/index.html
Although we primarily transport our hay to Florida, we also have clients in Maryland, Virginia and North Carolina that we supply as well.
Right now we have some very nice 1st. cutting straight orchard grass, as well as 1st. cutting Alfalfa / orchard grass mixed.
Also, we have a few hundred, dairy quality, 4th. cutting Alfalfa / orchard grass mixed bales left that we refer to as, " rocket fuel".:)
All of the above mentioned hay, is made with a John Deere 338 small square baler and are, 14"X18"X36" and weigh an average of 50lbs.
In addition, we also have small , 4ft.X4ft. 2nd. cutting Alfalfa / orchard grass mixed round bales. This hay is nice and is what we feed to our own horses everyday.
All of the hay mentioned above was made here in Maryland on our farm.
We have been following Courtney King Dye's progress, while jingling with both hands:).
We will, from any hay sale that comes from this posting, donate 10% of the proceeds of those sales to help with her recovery.
Again, thanks to The COTH folks for letting us post this and thanks to you members who took time to read it!!
Sincerely,
Scott Sutter

Hay available in South Jersey... It's 1st cutting, and because of the weather it was cut a little late, but the horses love it and it's clean and mold-free. Good timothy, no alfalfa. Hay Lifts Under Way In Several States
Farm and non-farm organizations in several states are helping livestock producers in drought regions gain hay supplies for the upcoming feeding season. Among the projects:
Iowa: Cattle and horse hay is being collected for shipment to livestock producers in Texas by the Northeastern Iowa Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. The Iowa group is also accepting monetary donations to alleviate transportation costs and seeking drivers and trucks to transport the hay. For more information, contact Rev. Harold McMillin at 563-880-5052 or email stjohnsph@alpinecom.net.
Nebraska: The Nebraska Cattlemen continues updating a list of individuals with available grass for lease or other type of forage for sale. The list is being distributed to cattle associations in drought-affected states. Individuals from outside Nebraska can also sign up. All agreements will be handled between the produc ers involved. For more information, call 402-475-2333.
New York: The Chenango County Farm Bureau asks local farmers to donate hay for distribution in Texas. It would like to hear from anyone willing to provide transportation or to help load. For more information, call 607-334-6061.
Ohio: The Ohio Cattlemen's Association (OCA) and Ohio Department of Agriculture are looking for state cattle producers interested in selling or donating hay to counterparts in Texas and other drought-stricken states. Many Ohio cattlemen will donate hay if recipients pay for shipping, according to officials. They should email beef@ohiobeef.org or call the OCA office at 614-873-6736 with the following information: amount of hay available (tons), age of hay (2011 or 2010 crop), type of hay (grass, etc.), bale type, purchase price or available for donation (recipient pays shipping), name and contact information.
Wisconsin : Family Farm Defenders, a farmer-organized non-profit, is collecting donations of any type of quality hay – small square, large round or square bales – for delivery to Oklahoma. Those interested can contact Randy Jasper at 608-553-2203 or John Kinsman at 608-986-3815 for drop-off locations and times. The group also welcomes financial contributions to support the hay-lift effort. Send checks to Family Farm Defenders, P.O. Box 1772, Madison, WI 53701. (Write "hay lift" in the memo line.) Gifts are tax-deductible.
Editor's Note: If you know of other organizations or individuals involved in similar efforts or projects, drop us a note at rmooney234@gmail.com. Include phone or email contact information.

I am posting this for my hay guy who is ramped up enough to where he can expand his business a bit. He sells good quality hay, brings it to you and puts it up in your barn.
He has a source for O&A about a 50/50 mix, and a nice green, soft timothy. The bales are good size and run in the 12-14 dollar range depending on the load. He can give you more details on weight, cuttings, etc. He is in the central FL area and will deliver within a 50 mile radius of his location for free as well as unload and put in your storage. Farther out, there is a small fuel surcharge through out Florida and Southern Georgia.
He is a heck of a nice guy and I have not been unhappy with anything I have gotten from him in the last year. If you think you might be interested, give him a call. His name is Jeff, 706-970-9036..tell him Sandy referred you or you saw the post here (trying to convince him the internet is important.) Have a great day!

I know we are a long ways away...however, here goes. $30.00 a bale Canadian. Bales appx. 1300 pounds. Put up dry, Higher in brome than alfalfa. Feeding it to our own horses, so we are a little picky on quality. If it's not good enough for our horses, it's sold to cattle guys.
