OK, I'm sure this has been discussed, but I've tried searching and all the terms I can think off are just too common.
Does anyone have statistics on how many horses that start dressage training actually reach grand prix? How about by breed? How about riders?

I asked the USDF that question and they told me they did not have that info available, however, I could PAY to have those statistics pulled from their datatbase. No thanks.

well, one could look at the USDF Yearbook, it would give you the horses that reached the median score in 2007. You would get a good idea by breed as well.
Of course that's not perfect but it's a rough idea for both breed and riders.

Well, go to the breed awards page and do it by level. Go to the biggest breed, say the Hano's and look at how many are in the GP listings. That will give you a rough estimate. I bet less than 10% in total, but Id have to do the #'s.

ok, I just pulled up the Horse of the Year, but......... that cant really be counted as you have to have so many points. Its not the total of horses at GP, by far. There are 88 that are qualified for HOY.

Wow. Pretty small numbers, huh? I'll try to follow your suggestion.

I've heard that of all of the horses that actually have potential and start out with Grand Prix goals in mind, only 2% of them actually make it all the way to compete at Grand Prix. It is very very very difficult to get all the way up there and those riders/horses who get there deserve all the respect in the world!!

That sounds like what I remember hearing before, but I couldn't remember for sure!

well, seems like I remember that in the overal HOY stuff, that there are about 250-300 horses in the USA competing at GP.
does anyone remember how many horses are at training level?
I'm guessing more like about 1% make it to GP but it depends on what you use as the denominator. All horses competing in the usa? all horses trained in dressage in the USA?

I think I would use competing at training vs. competing at GP, to keep it as close as possible.

From all the work we did on the scoring analysis, I can tell you the percentage of rides at each level last year:
Lvl.........# of rides....percent of total rides
Training.....33018.....30.79%
1st............26657.....24.86%
2nd...........14080.....13.13%
3rd...........11860......11.06%
4th.............8337.......7.77%
PSG............6835.......6.37%
InterMed.....4221.......3.94%
GP..............2224........2.07%
Total Rides...107232
While not an exact answer to your question (since it does not include those horses that started dressage training and never made it into a USDF/EF licensed show), I think it is a good 'proxy variable', that is, a related number that is likely to be closely linked to the number you want.
