Anyone know the average costs to keep frozen? I good friend of mine has a lovely sport pony that I would really love to have a foal from.. They are not 100% sure whether they will keep him/Sell him/geld him but I would still really love one of his foals. He is really lovely. Super trot, Awesome jumper and one of the best temperments I have ever seen..
Just curious and deciding on the logistics of it all!
Thanks!

I *think* my vet charges 5$ a year per dose. But I'm not 100% sure. And if it's only for couple of weeks before insemination (done by her)... well I dont remember being charged for.

Mine charges $15/mo for unlimited doses. Would be interested to see what others are paying... we don't have any in the tank right now anyway, but just curious. :)

My repro vet doesn't charge me anything for storing my semen. At any given time I will have 4-10 doses of semen in his tank. He also lets me use his dry shipper for free. I think I may be a bit spoiled ;)

ok so its not absurd amounts to store it.. I'm thinking this would be a great option as long as I find the right mare for him.. hmm.....

The last time I talked to UGA about storing frozen semen, the cost was $50/year.
I think the OP will find that storage costs are usually fairly reasonable. The bigger factor is who is going to pay to have the stallion collected/frozen. Some places charge a reasonable fee for this, but others are pretty expensive. There is a big QH breeding place in my area that charges $2000 to collect/freeze an outside stallion.

I think the bigger clinic in my area charges $250/ year for 1-25 doses.
My local vet said $20/ month.
Pretty pricey!!!
I am fortuante that my friend has her own tank, and lets my guys room with hers for free.

My repro vet in PA didn't charge me, yippee!! But when I asked my local vet he said it would be $30 a month!!! I don't know if he charged me at all when he inseminated my mare this month for the few days he had the frozen semen, I will find out when I get my bill. But I won't be storing any long term with him!!:(

The new clinic in our area is $25 a month for umlimted doses. For my tank, its $50 every 3 months to have it filled.

It's probably worth asking what type of insurance policy the veterinarian has on the storage tanks. I know my vet carries a large policy on the tanks in case of failure/fire/etc. Probably not an issue if you're just storing a dose or two but worth looking into if it is a large quantity.

We use Bovine Elite in College Station. www.bovine-elite.com
They charge
Warehousing Rates: $10.00 minimum per month.
$0.03 per straw per month for semen

Huge place. Very well run. Nice people. No worries!

Since she is undecided what to do with him.. sell/geld/keep..I will have to talk to her. I know she wants to keep him entire, he has lovely temperment and is not at all studish.. quite the gentleman which is what I'm looking for. But the logistics of keeping him a stud and marketing him are really making her think. My goal would be to produce a pony for my nieces down the road and possibly my own kids lol.
If she decides to geld, I think she will collect him for her own use as well and I have no problems going in on that and paying storage.. I really think this guy is worth it.. I truly hope she keeps him intact though.. I think he could produce lovely pony foals for a variety of disciplines...

I have about 35 straws from my late stallion Kreshendo*Ps* stored at Elgin Breeding Service in Elgin, TX. They charge me $36/yr for long term storage.
That's the best that I have ever heard of.
