Have been using chemetrics successfully for several years... but have never obtained blood..assuming it is not normal---but what does/can it indicate?
I have a pony mare due in 3 weeks - Shenandoah Watercolor-- today as I was doing the normal morning assessment-- I squeezed lightly on her developing bag and a stream of clear shot out...
Watched her all day and decided to do a chemetrics for baseline just now.
Did not have to work much at all to get it out-- first squirt was normal--- but subsequent squirts were bloody. I stopped and did not test--- figured the blood would most likely contaminate the sample for calcium anyway.
What advice can you give? I will call the vet of course, but just want to check in with Cother's who may have experienced this.

It's been quite a day already. This mare had some signs of foaling--but did not seem overly close. Bag was changing..but no milk as of last night-- she was still bloody on one side, and had couple clearish-- yellowish squirts on other side. We got enough for a chemetrics check--
but it registered lower than 50. So turned the mare back out. She was day 320.
This morning went to feed -- in the pregnant mare herd of 5 -- and there was the baby running around among the mares. Certainly not intended. Baby is strong. Mare is bottom of peck and the other mares were not letting her near her baby. We carried the baby into the barn and got the mare... Foal was trying to nurse--but nothing was there... blood on one side --nothing coming out of other side. The foal also was a little gurgly at times when breathing.
Loaded them up and took them to the hosptial. Foal on Iv's and antibiotics. Will need some supplemental feeding til the milk situation is figured out. Mare probably going to get antibiotics as well since the stuff coming out of her bloody side was gross-- bloody and brownish. The filly's lung ultrasound was clear-- which is good.
Mare is ok-- needs checked --as the placenta we found in field--it was impossible to tell if it was all there or not.
Please send some jingles for mare Posey and her new filly -Pebbles.
So-- I guess chemtrics really did not let me down-- it just gave me false assurance which turned out to be a bad thing.
I think it was probably accurate--as there was no milk there for it to accurately test even though foaling was eminent.

Well crap!
Windswept sent me an email regarding this and now I'm reading the post. That baby is my "grandchild" as it's by Otteridge Foxtrot. I'm so sorry! Please provide details when you can. Will definitely say a prayer for mare and foal. We used to have Shenandoah Watercolor as well.
I'm at a loss to give any advise as I've never heard of this before.

Lots of jingles from California!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Did the vets give you any idea why the blood and no milk? Is this a maiden mare? Did the milk come in later? Hope mare and foal will be alright! Keep us updated!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Jingles must be helping--thanks so much - just had an update from the hospital
Mare is doing well-- no signs of retained placenta.
The yucky bloody/ brown stuff in her milk on one side-- is now gone. White milk now.
Other side also white now..
So she has milk now-- but we have no idea if foal got colostrum--- won't know til we run the IgG
Vet feels the bloody milk was probably a degree of mastitis. Mare is on antibiotics. I had never heard of mastitis ahead of the foal before. This milk trouble is most likely what messed up the chemetrics results.
She's not a maiden mare--has had lots of foals. To my knowledge, she has not had problems before. She was dry lotted here --since Feb or March.
Foal is on antitiobics. Has figured the nursing thing out well. Foal was weighed at the hospital-- 52 pounds! Fiesty-- trys to kick up if you rub her butt! So seems to be feeling ok. Breathing is fine now also. Still on some supplemental feedings until we are certain the whole milk system is working good.
Keep them in your thoughts-- IgG will be drawn in the am-- if low, will need plasma.

Wow, scary day. Did they give the baby other colostrum or oral IgG? I would check the IgG well before 24 hours so you can supplement if needed. Much safer than transfusions. Good luck!

Thanks so much to all for the jingles.
Posey and little Pebbles are doing well. Pebbles did NOT need plasma today--her IgG was fine. Somehow? not sure how that happened--but I am very thankful!
If all goes well tonight, they will get to come home tomorrow late afternoon. I went to see them today and they were doing very well. Filly is nursing well, the milk is normal now--no more bloody or nasty stuff coming out. All body functions are working just fine now for both the mare and the filly. Filly still has the IV Catheter in her neck, but she really did not seem to care about it. She was pretty much too busy trying to nurse when I went to visit that she really didnt give me the time of day!
Thanks again for all the support.
Will try to get some pictures once they get home and settled.

Picked them up today. Both mare and foal are doing well. Both are on SMZ's - well baby gets 3/4 of one... fun to administer. Thanks to all for the jingles!
As soon as we get caught up--I will try to grab some photos! Two foalings down for the season-- two more to go. Hopefully the next two will be plain ole ordinary!

Much thanks to Ladybug Hill for the pictures... and the slideshow.. she got a new camera --so nice I am afraid to hold it for her!
As you can tell--the milk situation turned out just fine for this little filly. It was mastitis PRE Foaling-- that caused the problem initially.
Wierd.
Here is the slideshow -- What do you say-- chestnut roan like the momma? or greying on top of the chestnut roan?? I dont know what to put on her welsh papers.

Chestnut roan.
Foxtrot has had a number of them. His dam was liver chestnut with a million speckles on her stomach.

Cute baby!!!
I agree with VB - chestnut/red roan. Head is still red while the body is not. If it were reversed I would say grey.
Cute no matter what - love the roany ones!
