View Full Version : Hot and humid here. How's your weather?

It is hot and humid outside, but the riding is great!

I change the routine for the weather, doing shorter sessions where I concentrate on one or two issues only. I tell my horse that we can work for a short time, or a long time, whatever it takes, but today we are only doing fill-in-the-blank (or two), and then we can be through. He is wonderful and works his heart out, and then we are done. When I am done riding I am totally energized!

After the ride today I cleaned the stalls and scrubbed water buckets, still wearing my schooling boots and fishing vest (which I wear to hold the sugar cubes. Sugar cubes get terribly sticky and crumbly in hot, humid weather). I was drenched with sweat, but energized, as if I'd had a super workout and then the sauna! Who needs a gym?

How is the weather where you are and how are you handling it?

Hot and humid here too, but that's EVERY summer in the DC area. We like to express our seasons to the fullest. :)

We've also had LOTS of rain this year and a recent soaker on Sunday night my paddocks are a mess. I live very close to the water on a penisula that is also farm land so my land is sandy in some places and rich soil in others. The sand is pretty packed and dries quickly. The rich soil stays soggy and squishy and makes a mess, this of course is the spot that my light colored horses like the best!

I work during the day and generally ride in the later evening, getting on around 5:30 or 6:30. The sun isn't as strong then but the heat is usually a little worse since it's been "cooking" all day. But, I'd still rather ride in the afternoon! I ride on Thursday with my FEI lady and she'll have you sweating and panting and pleading "uncle" in below freezing temps, so you can imagine how it is in hot, humid weather. But, it's GREAT!

Due to my schedule I don't get to ride as much as I'd like and both myself and my horse could use some more fitness, we're getting there slowly...but it is harder when it's hot and humid.

But, there's always a hose...right?

Wait - there's weather OTHER than hot and humid??:lol::lol: Won't believe it until I see it.

Houston weather goes like this: 90+ degrees, high dewpoint, with a 60% chance of rain. This works for roughly 9 months out of the year. The other three months, it only gets up to 80.

Here in S.F., it's the typical cool and foggy summer day = probably in the 60s, breezy. However, when I head home from work to the East Bay - about 35 miles, it's predicted to be in the 80s today, the 90s tomorrow, and escalating toward the weekend. Humidity varies. Mostly, as you can tell from our horrendous fires this summer, it's hot and dry outside of the SF Bay Area.

I live in Mississippi.... if it's May - Sept you can count on 1) 90-100 F and 2) humid and 3) more 1+2+ pop-up afternoon T-storms - of course everyone around you gets rain but your farm doesn't... oh yes, and 4) bugs!

During the week I have to ride after work so I try to keep my riding sessions less strenuous since it's quite hot/humid/buggy- longer walk breaks between items I want to work on.

On the weekends I ride as early as possible so we can work a little harder.

Either way I have two fans in my gelding's stall so when we come back he glues himself in front of them until it's time for a shower.

It's freezing. I'm on my couch, under a duvet, with a Jack Russell on either side of me, sheepskin slippers on my feet and I'm about to yell at my SO who has gone out to check horses before bed and didn't close the front door.

I. Hate. Winter!

103 and 40% humidity...at the moment!

You know it's bad riding weather when you put sugarcubes in your breeches pocket only to have them melt from your sweat and the heat...gross!

It's summer in South Carolina (which is just another way of saying hot and humid!). Although I must say, we're having a "cool" spell, with temps hovering around 90 and a cool-ish breeze; much nicer than the potential July conditions.

I'm a warm person, so it doesn't bother me much. I try to take care to stay hydrated while doing work outside. I'm careful with the horses, doing most of our work at dawn or dusk, and sometimes hosing down both horse and myself before we start our ride.

Not just in Mississippi! It's that way here too! (Of course, I'm right next door to Mississippi)

I swear I have a glass bubble over my farm. The other day, one big storm went east of us, one went west, not a drop on me!

The SoCal desert is hot but not TOO hot at 102-105 and 15% humidity. I rode later in the day than I normally do today. WE are heading into the REALLY hot weather which will be 115-120 and DAMN HOT! Dry heat or not, it is unpleasant.

in Nome, Alaska it's 47 degrees, drizzle and fog. It's been like that for a week.

But hey, a while ago we had a record temperature high of 83 degrees! I went swimming in the tundra lake with my dog.

How funny. I was in Joburg during your "winter" in 2001. It sure felt like our summer to me :)

I used to live in the central CA foothills. I miss the dry heat, especially those nice evenings! I can almost smell the lupinand tar weed! I used to ride in the evenings out there. There is nothing like those warm breezy evenings! No dry heat here! We have the stuff that poaches you from the inside out!

Having a cold snap here. 82 and humid. Had major rain yesterday so humidity is high. Horse and I still come in, hhmmm, sweaty.

Used to ride in Lafayette LA ... two saddle pads and boots soaked through every day. Yuk. Don't miss that.

Riding in Austin was like riding in an oven.

No, AZ...monsoon season is awful - regularly over 110 degrees, PLUS very high humidity...

makes me want to move to alaska! (or at least back to B.C!)

I once went to a seminar for 3 weeks in Houston in the summer, couldn't figure out why the dorms at Univ. Houston were so cold and Gilley's so cold, till 8am waiting for shuttle bus and sweating and watchingmy hair frizz.
so hot.
of course here in georgia it's 95, but this year we have rain, last year no rain.

It's definitely hot and humid here in lower Alabama. I haven't had to worry too much about riding in the heat though because my horse is lame with a soft tissue injury right now. I guess if he had to get hurt, now was the time to do it. :) I usually try to get to the barn by 7:00 am and get all my chores done before it's too beastly hot. It amazes me how much I still have to do even though my guy is out of commision!! I think I need to find a stable boy.... ;)

Southern Arizona in the higher elevation. Warm (high 80's) and humid! I ride early in the morning. Try to be in the saddle NLT 7 AM. During the week. I try to ride about 6 AM. Monsoosn rains are usually in the afternoon, so i works better to ride before the clouds build up. I HATE the summer......

Well it's 102 here now. I am just north of Phoenix. The humidity isn't bad today; but, I still started riding at 6:30 AM. After I got done with the first one I moved on to the second one, then the third and finally the fourth one. I was out of the saddle at 10:45 AM and then worked with my 2 year old just saddling him, putting on a bridle and turning him out. Though I need another one to ride like I need a hole in my head I can't wait to start backing this guy next year. I'm just not sure how I'm going to juggle the 5 going under saddle at that time ;) Of course that's my schedule on my days off. When I work, I ride at night starting at 8 PM.

It's actually been fairly pleasant here in eastern VA recently. Temps approaching 90, but the humidity has been staying down around 70% (usually 80+) with a nice breeze. Couldn't ask for anything better! It makes riding much more enjoyable!

I'm going to annoy you all by saying how beautiful the weather is in Pompadour, France, where we are visiting (hubby is judging the CDI here and I am ... on vacation.) Highs around 75, light breezes.... blah blah blah.

We can't seem to go more than 30 hours without a thunderstorm. In June, it rained 22 out of 30 days, and only one weekend day during the entire month was without rain. Making hay has been problematic. The mosquitoes are very happy. Huge T-storm at 4:00 this a.m., with power outages. It is pouring out right now. I'm contemplating building an ark.

The only word for summer in the DC area is "disgusting." I try to ride at 6:30am to beat the heat and humidity. I had to ride a lesson the other night at 6pm and damn near died.

I. HATE. SUMMER.

It's very hot and humid here, but that pretty much goes without saying. It's hot and humid in Southeast Texas for at least seven months of the year.

And now we're all going to hate TM because not only is she visiting in the French countryside, but she lives in San Diego County. ;) I was in Paris on business a couple of weeks ago and can confirm the weather was lovely, and I grew up in San Diego and can confirm the weather is always lovely there.

I am liking the weather in the Alamo/Walnut Creek, California area. After 30 plus years in south east Texas, this feels like winter. Fog brings in cool temps in the mornings and mild afternoon/late evenings. I can ride any time of the day and not be drenched.

As I type this my mare is on her way to California from Texas. Should be interesting to see how she enjoys this weather.

Whoops....forgot to change where I live now! :-)

Agreed! I have plenty of things I should've gotten done today, but it's disgusting outside. I have to ride tomorrow, outside, at 5:30, we'll see if I survive. Temps are to drop 10 degrees on Tuesday though if the weather people are to be believed.

It has been very hot and dry here for the past few weeks. Today it sort of broke, a little cooler, a little rain, thunder and lightning and low clouds, which just made things buggy and sticky and humid--a really great day to clean out the farthest nether regions of the steel hay shed...

Oh well, it will be snowing soon, so I can bitch about that.

Did I say this? Boy, how things change in a week or so...we're back to normal now. Walk outside and within 3 minutes you're as wet as if you had had a shower...oppressive, thick, snakey, all those words are accurate...but it's summer, and I'll take it anyday over freezing, blowing nor'easters. The horses probably would disagree with me about that.
