And your serious about it...... your horse is going the best since you got her. Then your barn help comes up and says....... "You need to come look at Dream's leg"......... I feel sick in my stomach.
I go out to find her back leg swollen by the ankle and just inside the inner cannon bone. I flex, I poke, I move her around, she is showing no signs of pain. There is very little heat in it, but its def. swollen.
Farrier is here today to reset and if its not better I will run her to the clinic.
She is doing this just to #$%#$%#$% with me???
The mare was 100% sound yesterday, did not take a lame step. All was fine.
:(
Then the little arabian (Yes STF even rides arabians....) tore the inside of her front foot up adn the farrer is out there right now trying to fix it. The rain we got last week did a doozie on their feet. Hot in the 100's then rain is not good for hoof walls.
So............ did someone say show? Baaahhhahahhahahahahah!!!
:lol::lol::cry:

Hopefully it's just a little bit of nothing that a cold hose and a day won't take care of. The lack of heat and sensitivity is good! Best of luck!

Huh, sounds like my whole last 12 months! Funny though, nothing really happened when someone else showed my horse last month...

But it could be worse. There's a person at our barn with a similar situation...except when you mention "show" it is *she* who gets injured. Torn ACL. Badly sprained ankle. Tweaked back. We are convinced her husband has a voodoo doll and sticks pins in it every time he hears she is planning on going to a show (and leaving him with the 4 kids all weekend).

I have no idea.
The mare is sound as ever, but there IS swelling. I have tweaked and such on that tendon, susps. and nothing. She sleeps while I do it.
Maybe a bite or something to cause fluid?! I hope so.
Darn it!!!

cold hose above the swelling 2/3 times a day leave and dont wrap it
um and you could stuff some mud clay up her leg day and night for a couple of days as but wash it off in the morning and re apply clay is a natural healing and guess what it tightens as it drys -check for puncture wounds i have know bee stings to do it as well
that will do until clinic if no signs of improvement can get clay from any tack shop naf naf do it

I have tons of politic and mineral ice, etc.
I cant see any signs of puncture or abrasions (looked).
Very little heat in it at all, but def some swelling from the ankle joint, around the back tendon and along the inner side.
She flexes it fine, stands on it fine. I have not trotted her on it yet as the farrier has been here, but will tonight once it cools off.

Have you thought about putting some surpass on it? Cold hose it and put surpass on it to take down the swelling.

Sounds like someone might be trying to tell you something. Maybe you are supposed to stay home this weekend....

No, the mare is not trying to f*** with you.

I never mess with that stuff. If it's hot and swollen it could be anything so it's safest to assume the worst, unfortunately, and treat accordingly. You already know that. To hell with the show. When that happened to my young horse, it seemed like nothing but u/s showed injury to collateral ligament in the fetlock- 6 weeks stall rest, etc etc..

But I confess I glazed over a little when I read the words

" barn help" :) SIGH:)

If you don't wait for the horse, they'll make you wait.

Sounds like it's not time to show yet....

There was a woman I used to board with who had a mare with ringbone, and she SWORE that every time she even whispered the word "show", the mare would come up lame - even if she was perfectly fine for weeks before. Ever since meeting that horse, I tend not to mention showing too much around my mares. I don't want them getting any bright ideas. ;)

No thoughts or advice to offer you, but good luck - I hope that both horses are better soon!

For me, I decided after a great winter of schooling dressage that this year I would do several dressage shows. Only, I live in a dressage show wasteland and the gas prices skyrocketed.

Good luck with your horse.

Well 95% sure its a light soft tissue injury. Not sure how she did it. Have no idea. She is not turned out with other horses. She is turned out into a small 1/4 ac turn out of her own at night and brought into her stall during the day. I honestly have no idea how she did it. I will post a pic of it later. $%^%^&#%$%#$!!! :(

Take some of the $ you were going to spend on the hotel, gas, and meals at the show and take yourself to a day spa. Get a massage, hot stone treatment, facial, and then a big margarita (or two). Hot tub therapy is definately in order here.

I'm sorry this happened to your mare.

You have my sympathies.

I swear mine hears the words "show" or "clinic" and starts to colic, so I know how you feel--I was walking horsie round in circles at 8am this morning. (No lasting damage--seems fine now, just suffering from the effects of radical changes in barometric pressure, I think.)

I hope she's feeling better soon...

STF! Did you TELL THEM THEY WERE GOING TO A SHOW?!!!

If you did, WHAT were you thinking? You know what they do, if they know!

I know, I know.....
Thing is she was looking SOOOO good. I think all will be fine, but I do want to do the 2 weeks off and then have it ultra sounded once more.

Being 100 degrees and then getting rain is no excuse for hooves to "fall apart." I would evaluate everything about the horse's diet and environment, and the trim/shoeing if feet are falling apart because of a few days of rain.

Today it pretty much looks like normal. Anti inflams and taking care of it helped. Still going to give her some down time and recheck it again next week.

Good luck.

A couple of months ago one of my boys came up with his right hind swollen from the hock all the way down to the fetlock joint. No heat, no pain, no lameness, no punctures or scrapes, nothing at all. It left me, the vet, my friends scratching our heads and shrugging our shoulders. After about a week it went away with no lingering effects. The best we could figure was that maybe he got stung by bees or something.

Anyway, I hope your Mystery Fat Leg has the same positive outcome.

sometimes a leg or two will get very swollen when a horse has a virus, the swellling will even move around to different legs as the virus runs its course. it doesn't cause lameness either.

STF
Jul. 18, 2008, 11:06 AM
I dont know, she means a ton to me and I dont wana take chances. Vet is almost postive its soft tissue, but she does not show any signs of sensetivity to it at all from pressue or walking. Dont know.

If you and the vet think it is soft tissue, better to be conservative, IMO.

Ice is your friend

Sorry about the show.

two legs, maybe. One leg, not likely.
