Anyone go? Anyone know how it went? Was it well attended? Did a lot of ponies sell? And for decent prices? Just curious and would have loved to be there myself if it had been possible. Thanks for any information!

There were some very nice ponies but prices were pretty low this year. I saw some great deals! But also quite a few no sales on the ponies going under saddle... There were a lot of people at first but toward the middle/end of the sale the crowd had thinned a lot.

Want the run-down? I can post them if you guys want them.
Low. None over 10k. The high seller was Bonfire to Bill Schaub. Only 4 or 5 sold over 4k. (Several no-saled at higher than 4k though)

Oh, I wanted to know who Bonfire would go to. We had a Samoa colt out of a TB mare and a regret selling him to this day. Now that Samoa is gelded everyone wants one! Are they planning to keep him intact? I hope so!

I'd love to see the post on what sold/prices.

I don't like to speculate, but the way Hershel talked made it sound like he was going to be gelded and made into a hunter pony.
I'll go get my book.

I was there and have to agree that it is a sign of the economy. Obviously this was a nice group of ponies and a lot of people got really good deals. It seemed like the were selling most of the unbroken ponies regardless of the price, but no-saled many of the ponies that were started under saddle.

There were a few youngsters that seemed to be questionable measures, but several of them were no-saled so they obviously aren't too worried about it.

In the pony industry, of course it has been known as that, VABred. My point is that it's an excellent saying to use beyond the (pony) industry. Think outside world, not just inside scoops. Really. VPBA is a model for breeders when it comes to promoting and marketing their stock (I'm thinking of how some WB registries would do well to emulate it in some ways). But using that saying in VPBA materials could do wonders for spreading that sentiment even wider.

No, it isn't. Not if you aren't already into ponies. I get a ton of calls for eventing ponies and folks are clueless that the place to look in VA--for any kind of pony. Same with dressage ponies. VA produces top class movers and jumpers, but no, VABred. Maybe that is the issue with "you" folks (not meaning this personally--remember, I'm complimenting here, OK?): you think from the inside too much. It actually surprises me that more folks outside of hunters don't realize how they can "car shop" (y'know, like how all the dealerships are clustered in one place in town) in VA.

I'm speaking as an academic in communications now, BTW. I've found VPBA an interesting marketing scenario for years and so have paid attention to its development and reception. I truly do think it presents a strong model for other "registries". If sportpony registeries could do half as much, over time, I'd be supporting them. But VPBA still has a ways to go to get the word out to the outside. It'd be interesting to see the website's "hits" counter...

OK, "ponies virginia" it was #3 in yahoo. "Hunter ponies for sale" it wasn't even on the first three pages. "Pony breeders": it's #1 (with Florida PB being #2 and Maryland being #4--way to go FL!)...After a slew of other tries, I find that if I put "sale" in there and don't put "breeder" in, it doesn't show up on the first three pages. (Are Google and Yahoo the same now? I'm getting the same results.)

Anyway, it's interesting to follow, but don't rest on your laurels. I'm intrigued that FL is getting up there!!!

Heard thru the grapevine that Bill may not cut Bonfire yet but breed him. He was DEFINITELY one of the favorites there - what a personality!!
Sizes were REALLY tough. All us pony breeders know that unless you've got small to small it can be a crap shoot! Folks had money but are just investing more wisely in this market. I bet with a better "comfort factor" they'll still pay what they are worth in any economy. I heard folks in Florida aren't backing off buying the good ones. The horse shows sure haven't dropped off in attendance.

I surely hope that he doesn't cut Bonfire, or at least stands him for a while, and then stores frozen before cutting him.

I desperately wanted to use Samoa again, but lost the opportunity to use him on bigger mares when he went back to Farnley, since they only do live cover. They'd have needed a very large ramp to get him up on my TB mares! Such a shame that he's gelded.

I hope he stands him too, at least for one season. Bonfire was one of our favorites to see at the Welsh shows last year and were hoping to breed to him next year. He was out in his pasture when we went to pick up our filly and I thought about sneaking away with him.

So, I was headed up to VA for a Connemara show and inspection, and decided to drop in at Farnley Stud. I found out the facts on Samoa, he is NOT a gelding-yet. He was kicked in the testicles this spring trying to breed a mare, and has had one removed, he still has one left. They're going to check is fertility next spring, and if all is well, he will continue to stand. I also saw Bonfire (he's stunning!) and he's supposedly going to stand at Farnley next spring. He may or may not stand longer, he will most likely be gelded and made into a hunter pony at some point.

I do have pictures but have no clue as to how to attach them on here! Email me privately if you'd like to see them.

Well, actually, Bill's original plan was to let him stand at Farnley next year and be gelded after that. Too much liability involved.
