I have deleted this because the team is chosen and we now need to be positive and support the team all the way to the Gold Medal at Hong Kong.
Next!

On the US eventing site, Mr. Wolf was explaining why the selection trials weren't open to the public. And Ms. Retreadeventer was telling him that "If you let us come, WE will build it" ( he discussed the cost and inconvenience of having to manage the venue for public attendance,w / portalets and roped galloping lanes and soda vendors.)
It's not like we're asking him to run the state fair every weekend. We only select an Olympic team every 4 years.
Agreed, RE.

I don't know why he feels this way. There were quite a few people at the outings at Great Meadows for Sydney. Yes, we needed a few crowd control volunteers because it was running during a wine festival held there.
Why would it cost money? I don't understand that.
And why not have a wine festival or something and have that 1-2 hours of x-c run at the same time? It would bring outsiders into the world of eventing and they might actually watch the Olympics.
I agree with you retread.
And The Fork is great at the volunteer round up.

well, portalets, rope for galloping lanes, a second ambulance, sure, there are a few cost items. But those things don't sound prohibitive to me.

I would certainly have paid to get in.

Me too - in fact if the mandatory outing had been in GA as it was rumored earlier...I had already emailed our area chairperson to get on the list for volunteering - THAT ALONE would have cost money: gas! The rumored venues were no where near Covington!
My husband and I were really excited; would have happily paid admission. Warts and all, the Olympics are still a high time at our home. The 2000 mandatory outing at FoxHall was a fabulous experience for so many of us...sad it didn't happen again, FOR SO MANY OF US!

Heck, I drove 9 hours from S. Carolina to Kentucky to volunteer at Rolex! I would have happily made the trek to the Fork -- and giggled at how convenient it was!

Did not seem the article but it sounds to me like a huge missed opportunity for public relations and fund raising for the Olympic team.

People paid $75 to watch 12 horses do their freestyles for the dressage trials. That $75 did include the I-1 freestyles in the AM, but the stands were a lot fuller in the PM than they were in the AM. That would pay for a few porta-potties, some tape, etc. The dressage folks also ran a fund-raiser or two during the two weekends of trials.
