I'm waiting for the vet to come and release my lovely 7 year old broodmare from her misery... she is colicking, and as far as we can tell, she's twisted somewhere. I've been administering tranq and banamine until my vet can get here, but it's not helping.
I need jingles for her 3 month old colt.. who has been standing with his mother since she went down. Poor little Tanner keeps trying to nurse, and is walking circles around her nudging and poking at her... :( I've got another very sweet mare who lets him hang with her colt, but I've never delt with an orphan before, and the whole situation just sucks.
So if anyone can spare some extra jingles... we could certainly use them tonight

Thank you all.. I only bought them 3 weeks, ago, and was so excited about having her in my barn... I'm not sure if that makes it harder or easier because I haven't had her long.
Would you leave him with her for the night so he really understands, or would you put her down somewhere other then their paddock, and put him back in the paddock with the nurse mare and her baby?

Was the vet there earlier to diagnose her? He thinks there is no hope? No treatment?
If so, and IF the mare is not aware of her foal being with her, then I would remove the foal and put her with the group you spoke about. If she still knows her foal is there and wants her there and it is a comfort to her, leave her until just before she is put down.

:( I'm so sorry. I actually just had a mare with a 3 month old filly colic 2 or 3 weeks ago (they are running together lately). We took her (the mare) to UF for surgery (she had displaced her large colon turns out), but we left her filly behind and the filly is now weaned. Then the day after I got that mare home, a different mare developed neruo issues and was euthanized 2 days later - with a 2 1/2 month old filly at HER side. I only tell you that to tell you what I did with the fillies.
When we took Val to UF we left her filly in a stall surrounded by my kind broodies/with babies at side that would tolerate and comfort her. She wasnt' happy but dealt with life. I weaned her over to grain slowly (she was already sharing with mom so it wasn't a huge shock). When we brought Val home the mare was in no condition to nurse so she has stayed weaned.
When Chloe developed her issues, by the 2nd night it wasn't safe to leave the filly with her (mare was not able to control her hindquarters and I was afraid she would fall on her) so I put her in the stall NEXT to mom with Val's filly. They were pasture buds and comiserated with each other thier sad lots in life. Sera was VERY upset about not being with her mom - UNTIL she was buried. As soon as Chloe was buried she immed quieted down and in fact that was when she fnally slept. (weird)
I have the fillies with each other still (in same stall and all) and they are both receiving grain and a milk replacer (esp for Sera since she was under 3 months).
Personally, milk replacer isn't going to hurt the 3 month old foal, but there are many QH people that wean at 3 months with no ill effects (I personally normally wean at 5 - 6 months) so in theory you shouldn't need the milk replacer. I am using it as a top dressing btw. THey say that the foal if they can touch the mare after the mare is euthanized that the foal has "closure" and is better faster... I don't know. I do know that Sera was frantic calling for mom until she was pulled away from the barn and buried (which was the next am unfortuately). I think I would let the foal stay in to see that the dam is gone, then put him with his buddy and the kind mare after that. Will that mare let him nurse??? Talk to your vet. My vet really listened to me and gave me some good advice and helped me out a lot during all of this.
It just sucks that this happened - and there is no time that it doesn't hurt any less. You can have the horse for a day or 30 years and it still sucks to see them suffering and in pain. I'm so sorry for both of you, I know how you feel. Jingles for the wee one, bless his heart.

Thank you all for your jingles... so far, they seem to be working in keeping little Tanner quiet.
She left very quickly. My vet did a very quick rectal to make sure that there was nothing we were missing, and found no manure, and lots of distended intestines. Her whole belly was becoming increasingly bloated as the last hours wore on. As the medicine was administered, she simply took one last deep breath... and left. Tanner tried to nurse a bit, then walked around her, sniffing. He hasn't called, or run around. I went into the barn to get some feed for the other broodmares, and when I returned he was lying next to her. As if the waterworks wern't flowing enough. He ate a handful of Sunshine pellets, and seems very quiet... he is with the other mare and her baby now, and seems to be doing ok for now.
I'm still in shock.. I can't believe that this beautiful mare is gone. She was such an exciting addition to my breeding program, and was so young...
I've got to try and get some sleep before the morning's events... I've got to order semen before I can start the hole digging process... talk about the circle of life.

acottongim - thank you for your post. I'm just hoping we can give him a "normal" enough childhood that he turns out a happy and well-adjusted young man. I'm hoping that the other mare will let him nurse, but we shall see how that develops...
I'm so sorry for the losses you have endured. After losing a foal last year, and mare this year, I'm not sure which is more heartwrenching... No matter how you slice it, it still hurts.

what a beautiful mare. Try and take comfort in her colt. It was the babies playing that finally got me laughing again. They will just MAKE you smile. There was nothing you could have done (cold comfort I know) so don't go back and second guess yourself (I know that I did that alot doing the 'what if" game). The first day or two Sera was a little moppy, but now she rules over Patty and I even caught her disciplinging two other foals that had just been weaned (I turned them all out together) for being too rambunctious. Your little colt will be fine - esp if he can be with his buddies right now. It is good that he got a chance to say good bye and realise that she was gone.
I've heard since Val's colic that displacing a colon, or twisting the intestine is actually very possible after birthing (usually 2- 3 months later). For being so large, these animals are so delicate. You did nothing wrong, and gave her peace in the end, just keep telling yourself that.
Jingles for your colt, and I am so so sorry.

I am so sorry for your heartbreaking loss. My friend's mare colicked and died three months after foaling and just days after she had moved the mare and foal from my place to a farm where she was the trainer. We brought her colt back to my place, thinking the familiar surroundings and horses would be a comfort to him. We turned him out with my yearling filly and they quickly became best buds and he did just fine -- had to separate them when he was about a year old because he had figured out that he was a boy and she was a girl and you know the rest. That was nine years ago and he has grown up to be a gorgeous, talented and very people-friendly stallion. Hugs to you and your boy Tanner.

I am so very sorry about your mare. I lost a mare in 2005 to a twisted colon that could not be resected. Her foal was only 20 hours old. It was terrible. :(:(:(
Your baby is a good age to go out with the other broodmare and baby and to have a perfectly normal life despite loosing his mama. It would be best if you can get him onto milk pellets until he is a full 4 months old, as the babies can't digest cereals and hay well before 4 months. Other than that, he just needs the companionship of the other mare and foal. His mama did the essentials before she left.

Thank you all.. it really is amazing how comforting it is to read all of your kind words.
Song was buried this morning, and Tanner seems to be hanging in there. He is somewhat confused, and does call for her occasionally, but he hasn't been frantic, and Star and her colt Matt are taking good care of him.
Its still not quite sinking in yet that she's gone, but he is such a bright spot for me - even before her death I had developed a real soft spot for him... which is only deepening now that we've gone through such a sad loss.

It's been 4 days since we lost song, and I have very happy news!! Star, Tanner's foster mom, is letting him nurse whenever he feels the desire to sidle up to the milk bad!! :D
He started trying the day after his mom died, and Star would gently walk away from him... apparently she decided that he might be insisting for a good reason, and will now stand quietly whenever he approaches her.
She has earned her place in my barn for the rest of her life. Thank God for saintly broodmares
