i am in need of a serious pick me up...

so about a week ago, my horse being brought in from the feild and whoever was at the gate didnt see him behind the other horse and he ran through the gate...he ran up and through to the barn..there is a slight step up into the barn and when he hit the concrete he slipped and fell....
he knocked his hip and had a HUGE slice across his back...

so we gave him a few days off( i mean he couldnt have cared less...he was as happy as can be!) and started to slowly started to work him again(like little walk trot stuff). he was a little off but i disregarded it because i figured that his muscles were a little sore and that my saddle pad was hitting his "could still be tender" cut scene...

but then...he was not getting any sounder..so i had my trainer(who she herself knows a little bit about chiropracting) look at him. from behind his whole right hip stuck out. but it was only noticable if you looked at him from behind. and he was not like that before. so before we started to mess with it, we had the vet come out and check him out first so we could make sure there was nothing wrong internally(like broken, out of the socket, etc). clean there...

so we've been slowly doing some stretching exercises to see if he can pop it back in by himself so we dont have to get invasive..hes on 1 gm of bute twice a day.

i really hope he comes through this like he was before. he was the perfect event horse in my eyes...and ive only had him for 6 months. if he is limited forever from this injury...i dont know what to do...i have such high aspirations..but there is no way i can part from him. Hes my little green bean..and i love him

ive been told that hes gonna be ok, but i guess theres still part of me that is worried..

its reallydepressing. he has SOOO much talent. he will jump the moon, a gorgeous mover, super athletic, and is such a sweetheart. hes my everything..and all i want...oh all i want is for him to be ok...

heres some pictures of my beatiful boy..see how im smiling in all the pictures?

My guess is if he landed on it hard enough, it is at the very least bruised and probably painful. He may be carrying himself differently because of that. It probably has edema, fluid, blood bruising, etc. inside, which will go away within maybe six weeks. That stuff has to be reabsorbed into the body in order for it to all go away.

baroquepony-you give me hope..so do you think thats why the hip bone is sticking out more than the other one? and that would cause him to be off right?

You can't say for sure without x-rays, but if your vet took a look and didn't feel anything SERIOUS was going on, yes, a really bad bruise, especially when it has to do with a protruding bone (as in the hip bone, knee, etc.) can cause a lot of swelling including of the periostium (the layer of sheathing over bones). Bones can actually be bruised, although I'm not sure exactly what everything is that goes on with that (physiologically).

Bruises always involve blood going to the area and edema (that clear yellowish fluid) and swelling and sometimes some smashed tissue that can and will heal.

Hand walking and grazing helps gently move the fluids out without letting the bruised and battered pony get to active.

I would think if he really popped his hip "out of joint", he would be really lame. Same if he had broken anything.

so we've been slowly doing some stretching exercises to see if he can pop it back in by himself so we dont have to get invasive..hes on 1 gm of bute twice a day.

It can take some time though for the really bad bruise to heal.

So, yeah, it sounds like he will be OK. Just keep an eye on things and take it slow.

I would expect him to have muscle guarding :eek:around the hip; ask your vet about Laser therapy :yes:or hot toweling, since you can't put him in a hot tub to soak!

thank you everyone!

carol you definately made me smile...yes i do believe he may be a bit big for a bath tub..

so tomorrow we are going to have a chiropractor come out just to make sure that there is in fact nothing wrong. and if there is...maybe he can fix it!

cross your fingers!:)

Don't spoil him too much or he'll be falling down all the time just to get more massages and things like that:lol:

Think positive...it really sounds like he will be fine. I had a horse fracture his pelivs and return to competing at Prelim and later the UL jumpers. Let him have some time to heal, listen to you trainer and don't be writing off his eventing career just yet!

above, stand on a chair behind him , and look down, check his spine:yes:, and back for evenness:yes:; from the accident you described I would fear a pelvic rotation;:( difficult to see from the ground ; watch for major muscle spasms:eek: in his glut on one side; you did say he slid right?

Carol, how high of a chair? And what is she really looking for in comparision of one side to the other from above and behind?

Aaahhh ... the details:yes:

Then he will need some time for things to heal and strengthen (not the vet, your horse).

Just keep it in the back of your mind for the next year or so that your horse did have this happen and that any work and conditioning you do will be helping further your horse's muscles to keep everything in its place.

I am sure someone on this board would now what schooling exercises would help.

I would think your horse should be fine.

Edited to ad: you might post a new thread asking what schooling exercises would help strengthen all of the muscles and ligaments involved in a rotated pelvis, now that the pelvis has been put back into alignment.

That would help Jester a lot. Then he can buck you off!

And you were all worried that his eventing career was totally washed up before he even got started

I would still take it a bit easy. You have gotten him to feeling much better after his little incident, but don't let him get too carried away for a little while
