I arrive tomorrow so I can help Flutie before Thursday.

Yeah!! I get to see FlightCheck before next winter down south. I'll be there Saturday and Sunday volunteering and apprenticing. I get in Friday late afternoon and will be staying with deltawave in St. Charles. Very psyched to be there. Haven't been since I competed in 2002. Weather forecast looks OK. Better for Wed-Fri, scattered storms for weekend and HOT! on Saturday, a little cooler Sunday.

I am planning to be there on Saturday & Sunday to spectate! We had gorgeous weather this past weekend, and I actually hacked around in the forest preserve on Sat.

The footing looks fantastic, I'm thinking this little bit of rain we are getting this week will make it even better! XC looks awesome, I am really excited to see everyone ride it!

Safe travels everyone!

The weather forecast changes more often than i change underwear. We have "Ice Horse" from California coming to demonstrate two of their super cooling gadgets on XC day. They run on a battery, and you can spray a horse with cold water where there is no electricity. I'm anxious to see them work!

I will have 2 training horses and a ** horse. I always look forward to Maui Jim! Yeah!

I don't know yet if I'm going... But if I am going, our trailer is leaving at 7 in the morning, so I will be on my way in a little under 12 hrs. Eek! There has been some chaotic confusion around here, hence the last minute possible participation on my part. I really hope I get to go!!! We are stuck right now in the middle of not wanting Horse and rider to make 2 day drive all alone, and needing to find someone to take care of the horses here so that I can go with her. The other rider she was going up with had to back out at the very last minute, so we are in a bind.

I am going to be SORELY disappointed if I don't get to go!!! I absolutely LOVE this show!!! Our big man is going to be in the Advanced division.

Jdufort- Bodega is moving up to advanced?! WOW!!! That's awesome! I didn't realize Cathy had bought him from you. That's cool! Congrats!

I'm going! I'm psyched, I've wanted to go to Maui Jim for a while, but last year my boy had only done a BN and a N at this time in the year, so T was a big fat no go. I thought about bringing him up for the 5 yr old YEH but the Prelim heights stated in the rule book scared me off. So this year I finally get to go T, yay!

And thank GOD it's going to be cool! Well, comparatively for me anyways, I've been riding weather with 105 high days! Let me tell you, even at 8 am lessons, it's about 95-100 degrees already! 87 as a high for my XC day is going to be freaking awesome!

Our boy will be there running in the Advanced though, so give him a cheer when they run by! He's been running Intermediate this Spring just to practice some technical questions (and they weren't doing a 3 day this spring so nothing to hurry about). So this is his first Advanced back. Hopefully all will go as planned! :)

Good luck to everyone! And I'm jealous you actually get to go!!!!!!!!

Jul. 11, 2008, 05:34 PM
That beautiful car was my 40th birthday present from my family, bless their souls. I adore that car, but it's been too rainy all summer to take it out much! I don't know about chick magnet--never tried to pick up any chicks with it. :p It doesn't hold more than me, the kid, and a couple of bags of feed, tops. Two adults would be difficult. Those were the days of skinnier people!

Update: Training XC was cancelled/postponed until Sunday, and Training SJ was held today instead. The footing on XC is actually pretty darn wonderful right now (other than the local H/J kids riding their horses cluelessly in the galloping lanes until we chased them off) Apparently, though, the EMS vehicles would have been tough to place and the decision was (properly, IMO) made to spare the footing for the upper levels and hold Training XC afterwards, if possible. Dunno about the forecast, but if it doesn't rain much more I think the courses will be fine.

I have lots and lots of pictures from dressage, will see if I can post a couple later . . . .

XC starting at 9 Am beginning with Training, jog up for CIC 3 and 2 Star at 10 am. It's been a feat getting everything scheduled and rescheduled depending on the whims of the weather. Major kudos to the Ground Jury, TD's, volunteers, Rick, and the riders who made it happen today - and kept smiling!

No one deserved this more than Shelby either! She is one of my good friends at my barn in TX and she is a total baller. She earns her way to every course she does and her horse is freaking fabulous. I was totally thrilled that she won this (although they called her to the office over the sound system for "a personal reason, nothing affecting your score", which is still completely nervewracking). Reed,

In the results online, is that accurate? 80.9 was your dressage score? 19.1 if presented in dressage terms? No wait....I bet this is both scores added? So, it was more like a 40? Which is not so bad....The pictures earlier in this thread do not look 19.1 bad (tense, not a lot of step under, so perhaps not "through"), but, pictures can tell a different story than video or even live viewing. You rode XC with no jump penalties and I know you have a healthy sense of self preservation to go along with your analytical & scientific talents, so I'm not asking this to be snarky or suggest you should not be at this level, but what was Shiver doing to get a score that low? Or, am I doing some stupid error in how I'm backing into the dressage score? What were the problem areas? This was multiple judges, right? How does that work? I see first was 46..so they combine?

Scoring for FEI events is different. I'm not sure how it's different, but 80.9 does not equal 19.1.

Absolutely fair questions! (I,m back at the abr in the barn area again).

We, including me, well, especially me, have hard time with dressage. We score crap in the end. At the FEI levels, a 75 equates to a 50 dressage (1.5 multiplier) so I had a 52, thereabouts.

In the end, we were clean on XC with time faults (the footing was good but you had to be careful) and had a cheap rail in stadium, hind boot slipped and Shiv did a few weird steps coming into it.

flutie1 said it best, "Shiver is a classic event horse. Dressage is something you do on the way to XC." ;)

Shiver is DEFINITELY a classic event horse. Fierce and full of himself at all times, except when he's pitifully begging for treats. :D He is beeyootiful and such a good jumper.

I thought their dressage was not all that bad, except that Shiver does NOT walk. Ever, apparently. Nothing like the old jiggity-jig to earn a few horrible scores. :( The rest was fine, and you should SEE Shiv's medium trots in XC warmup! :)

My trainer got 4th in the CIC** with a great weekend all around. There was a brief XC timing snafu--they had her coming in at 8 minutes plus (optimum was 5:30-something) and we were all going WTF? She would've had to trot the whole thing to come in at 8 minutes! This was soon sorted out, whew! They were in 3rd after dressage, tied for 5th after XC and moved up to 4th after a 0/0 stadium. :) They're going to finish the season at Intermediate, aim for the Fair Hill CCI** and the "big A" next year!

Thank you for the explanation. After seeing that first place was in the mid 40s, I realized that I must not understand the scoring, hence my asking the questions.

And I completely understand tense dressage, but I truly wondered how anyone could get a 19.1 on a dressage test...it almost seems that elimination would occur before someone got that many 0-3 scores:lol:.

They were in 3rd after dressage, tied for 5th after XC and moved up to 4th after a 0/0 stadium. :) They're going to finish the season at Intermediate, aim for the Fair Hill CCI** and the "big A" next year!

On my favorite horse??

Thanks everyone - riders, volunteers, officials, staff - who came together to make the weekend happen seamlessly in very difficult weather circumstances. I especially enjoyed hanging out for a while with Reed - and badgering the Gold Medal DS winner. (no, not an actual award - just lots of hassling).

Tally ho!

Flutie
As always, a phenomenal event. The weather was not cooperating at all, but Flutie and her crew did just a super job - officials were friendly and helpful, courses great, and a fun time had by all. Our ponies were all pretty darn fabulous (not my beast's fault, I had to stop and ask for directions on my way around the Prelim course), and the jumps were lovely, the courses flowed, and the organizer divine. Well done!

P.S. Congratulations to our own Badger who won the Area IV Adult Rider best score ribbon. It'll be sent when I get back from Stuart.

I did??? I missed hearing this at the event. I'm afraid I was busy having an interaction with a large tree on the training x-c course. I'm starting to think the trees are out to get members of this bulletin board. Reed last(?) year, me this year, who will be next?

There were 9 points difference in the scores between the two judges for my one-star ride...so did you take the best score and not the average?

I agree that this was a very well-run competition. I think the decisions that were made regarding scheduling were spot on and we appreciated the early morning announcements. I am incredibly impressed by how flexible it seemed everyone was and how smoothly everything was run despite the lack of cooperation from mother nature. I really didn't think I was going to get to run XC at all on any of the 3 horses I was competing. Even if we were allowed to run, I was worried about making the difficult decision whether or not to run my upper level horse in what I thought would be bad footing. The footing ended up being good for all levels, even though many of us had to visit the farrier Saturday evening! Amazing job!!! Thank you!!!

Tell her congrats from Heather (an old friend) and Betsy (aka Wolfie's Mom).

So glad she has such a fun one--I remember her Mom showing him to me in the stall just shortly after they acquired him years ago, and discussing how he was related to my own homebred, so he must be a good one. ;-)

Well, Flutie did it again -- wonderful weekend. With the awful weather and having to make last minute changes, Maui Jim was a true testament to the good nature and flexability of everyone associated with our sport -- organizers, officials, volunteers and the wonderful competitors, many of whom traveled long distances to be there.

As always, it was so good to see Cammie and GotSpots, in particular, and my wonderful house guests -- FlightCheck, Cindy, and Lisa. It was so good to see so many friends throughout the show.

Maui Jim Rocks. Hard work happens behind the scenes at every event. When it is a premiere event, encompassing both FEI and National levels *and* the weather fails to cooperate, the work is magnfied. I was incredibly impressed by the flexibility of volunteers (showed up thinking they were jump judging and ended up stadium scribing, stewarding and timing); officials and competitors. Lots of smiles, some questions/concerns, but I personally didn't see anyone whining or being nasty the whole weekend. It was great seeing old friends and meeting some new ones in such and great venue. Congrats and kudos to all the competitors (at least those who didn't jump the wrong last fence ) and to flutie, flightcheck and BBowen and all the other officials, staff and volunteers

Flutie had the volunteer situation nailed down so well that Jay and I got fired from start box volunteering duties and instead got to watch pretty horses gallop and jump all weekend. It was a sacrifice, but somebody had to do it. At one point we did go on an emergency ice run for the vet box. When we came back to the gas station for the second 20 bags of ice, the people working there were asking us how much tequila we needed to go with that and if they could come to the party.

Great fun weekend. Hats off to Flutie, Rick, the vets, Becky, Ritch, Dan, John, volunteers, Lamplight staff, and most of all to Leslie Law who sacrificed first place in the 1* so that Badger could move up and get a pretty ribbon her first time out. That is the real story. A ribbon at 1* would mean more to her than him and, kind man that he is, he did the honourable thing and purposefully jumped the wrong last jump so she would finish in the ribbons. Fell on the sword as it were. Well done noble knight. ;-)

Flutie and company certainly did a tremendous job juggling schedules and keeping the communication flowing and managed to make the most of the challenging weather. Kudos to all whose hard work ensured everyone got to compete in a full event and not a combined test.

And Cammie, you are too funny. I never knew a silver ribbon would tickle me so much. It is pretty awesome to get to ride in such grand company—I kept trying to channel LL's position when we were riding in dressage warm-up at the same, and I sure as heck took his well-placed crop-smack at liverpool to heart in case I would need the same at the training water later in the day.

I'm sitting here feeling sorry for myself, after a run-in with a wasp nest and resident wasps while trying to rescue a baby bird from a barn kitty. The result? A very sore, itchy, and swollen leg.
Then, going for the matched set award, I had a run-in with angry and upset broodmare's foot. My foot vs hers. Now I have a broken foot. Very sore, very swollen, and shades of purple not normally seen in nature.

Whining and shameless pity seeking aside, did anyone happen to see Jack (A Jack of Hearts) ridden by Allison Springer, go? Open Prelim. Any pics?
He is one of my much-loved 'homeboys'.

Fred:

OMG, you poor thing!!!! That is terrible. Having a kind heart should not cause so much pain.

Well, hopefully this will make you feel better -- Allison took first place on Jack. She had a wonderful weekend and I can attest to the fact that I gave her several ribbons and lots of prizes.

You can see the results on www.mauijimhorsetrilas.org. On the results page is a link to Lori & Jeff's site (Xpress Photo), but the Maui Jim photos are not up yet.

Hope you are feeling better very soon.

Fred - Jack was terrific. We're all very pleased with him (and he's very pleased with himself). He made quick work of a fairly tough Prelim course and show jumped beautifully.

Feel better soon! Hugs.

Are there any of the smurf jump on SJ?

deltawave
Jul. 16, 2008, 11:56 AM
There were tons of Smurf jump photos at the photographers' trailer. The course designer made the jump so the Smurfs faced the in-gate, and were easy prey for photographers. ;)

Here are Erika and Jake with the Smurfs. :) They didn't get one of Reed and Shiv over that jump. :(

LOVE the Smurfs!

Are they affixed to the jump, or are they attached to their own standards?

DW, those smurfs are awesome and just gave me a great giggle. Are they travelling smurfs or do they reside only at Lamplight? IF so, it will make me try even harder to qualify for the AEC's!

scubed
Jul. 16, 2008, 03:44 PM
the smurfs can travel. Deltawave brought them to Lamplight. We screwed them to the standards the same way we screwed the jump numbers to the standards, so easy to remove with just a couple little holes, that can be used to attach to other jump standards in the future. I believe they will stay put through the AECs, but ask Deltawave and Flutie for clarification. Perhaps they could go to Richland (or other places) if organizers/SJ course designer were game and someone could transport?

As scubed said, the Smurfs can pack up and go places. ;) I'd love to leave them with Flutie for now (because she "gets it" and has the requisite sense of humor) and have them "do" the AECs for sure. But I'm sure Flutie would loan them to whoever would make room for them. No problem on my end to see them travel hither and yon. I also have a set of stencils to make more if anyone wants to get creative with a jigsaw and some paint. :)

thank you for the Jack update, and also for the sympathy GS, BB and hrsjmper.

The novelty of having one foot looking like a Storm Trooper from Star Wars has definitely worn off! :)
Please send KitKats.

Thanks for the link to the results, BB - not only was my Home Boy 'Jack' first in that division, my Home Girl 'Charm' aka Park Avenue Romance was third behind him!

I sold Jack as a 2yrold and also sold Park Avenue Romance (both full TBs) as a 2yr old. She is now 5 I think. It's great to see them in such good homes!

I went to look at the pics on Xpressfoto, but had to give up. #@&% dial up!!
