I'm trying to get the details worked out and need to gauge interest. We are less than an hour north of the KHP. He would only do one group of Novice, the rest above that. Early fall, no date yet set. Interest level and riding level please.

I'd be interested!
I'm currently competing at Novice with an eye towards tackling training next year, possibly.
If it matters, I'm in S.E. TN

I might be interested depending on the dates. My schedule is a bit hectic. I would have an intermediate horse that is running advanced and a CCI** in October and maybe a preliminary horse that is running a CCI* in October. I would be coming from WI, but my dad lives in Lexington.
Keep us posted!

If its not the last weekend in September(I'm in a wedding), I'd totally be interested!!
and I know several other people who would also be interested, I think.
Spread the word to some of the local-ish Pony clubs, and i bet you'd get some more intrest....
I'd do prelim, or training(if there wasn't a prelim group). and some of the people I know, would probaly do novice or possible training.

Considering how many (yeah right!) big name clinics are in the area, I'm sure you could get quite a few folks who would be interested (I would but currently I've got a training horse with a tumor and a pre-starter prospect ;)). I'll ask around at my trainer's barn though!

I would drive a very, very long way to ride with Jimmy Wofford.
My only competing horse is Novice, but I've ridden up to Preliminary. My hope is the youngster will be ready for Training this fall, so I'd think a Training group under the eye of the master would be do-able.

I love riding for Jimmy. Depends on cost (stabling, can I stay in my trailer, etc.) and weekend (Flying Cross HT and KY Classic are possibly on my schedule). I have an experienced Preliminary horse which I also did a year at Intermediate.

Yep, I'd love to do another clinic with him! I'm in the Louisville area and pretty sure you could generate a lot of interest, as he came here a couple years ago and had a full house! Depending on exactly when, I'll either have a training or prelim horse.

I am waiting to hear back from Jimmy with a list of possible dates. Weekdays or weekends doesn't matter to me at all, that's probably the next question, though I'll ask Jim which he prefers. I plan to keep all costs to a minimum (yes really) since the object of this clinic is simply to a) Ride With Jimmy Wofford. b) Get our farm a damn fine "grand re opening".
c) Great Day in the Morning, we Get to Ride With JIMMY WOFFORD!!!!!
Once we get the dates set, I'll do the math and the goal is to get an absolutely top notch clinician in here (hopefully a recurring theme) and break even. I think too many times the expense keeps some that would really benefit from being able to attend, so gas and expenses being what they are, without insulting Himself, I'm going to make it as doable as possible for everyone.
There are three quite decent Holiday Inn type hotels within 5 minutes of the farm. Decent restaurants,(Cracker Barrel, Mexican, and the usual fast food) 2 places on the exit to get diesel and truck/trailer friendly gas stations. The county we live in is dry, save one Mexican restaraunt about 10 miles up the freeway. It is the only place you can get ANY alcohol at all within 25 miles. (Not that it matters to any of us).
I'll post more as I get more information from Mr. Wofford.

My horse is across the country but if anyone has a second horse they want in a novice group, I'll pay the entry/expenses to be able to ride with Jimmy. Long shot I know, but I'm just putting it out there. I'll be there for the month of September, so date-dependent also. How cool though!!! I'll definitely audit at the least!

I'm continuing to check my email every hour like a senior without a prom date. As soon as I get a list of potential dates, I'll post back. I know it was a holiday weekend, and don't know JW's schedule. Waiting is very hard. Patience is not one of my strong suits. Off to do evening chores and roach the big horse's mane. If Jimmy only knew how much we need him, he'd come for a week. I'd find a way to pay for it somehow.

according to his website Jim is on a "fishing trip/extended clinic" until the 17th. While he's usually pretty prompt with his email, I wouldn't hold my breath while he's fishing....

Saje, want to field trip up together? Depending on finances, I could be in with a novice horse (and depending on if the novice group is already full to bursting) - actually, heck, if there's space, I could probably just sell enough plasma between now and then...

The clinic will be held (when, we're still not exactly sure, it will be JW's call, but shooting for late summer, early fall) at Summer Hill Training Center (formerly Stonebroke Farm) which is on I-75 about 35 minutes north of the Kentucky Horse Park. Everyone that wants to audit will be more than welcome. Horses are horses, no matter what discipline you ride. When you have someone with the experience that Jimmy has, if you read his books, you'll realize that most top equestrians enjoy all types of horses in all different settings. And things aren't as different as most people think. You need a good canter in order to jump well, whether you do the H/J thing, or event. (yes, Denny, I was listening.) Eventers encounter the same problems as show hunters, as DQ's, etc. Bring em all findeight. (but just be warned, galloping on real grass in a straight line can be very addicting) And we don't care what color your breeches are, or how big your butt is.

LSM1212
Jul. 9, 2008, 03:09 PM
Nope.... though I would love to. Unfortunately, I'm at the mercy of the barn as I don't have a truck/trailer. And it's not on the "show" list... plus, most of the boarders at my current barn are Eventers. The "show" schedule only has 2-3 H/J shows on it a year and I've done 2 of them already and the 3rd one was before I was ready to show.
Now if I could get more interest from my fellow boarders, my trainer would take us. But most of them are kids and they like to save for the Eventing stuff instead.
But I am doing my first Event on Aug. 3rd (pending that my entry was accepted). Just doing Starter... baby stuff. But it will be our first one!
Maybe I need to start "needling" hubby about getting a truck/trailer... I only need it for one horse!
Do you think Stitch would be ready for Novice to participate in the clinic by this fall??? J/K NOT!!!! I'd be scared out of my mind. :D

Jim gave me a choice of Sept 6-7 or the 13th-14th. I can have up to three groups per day w/ no more than eight riders in each group. I can only have one Novice group, the others must be above. His requirement originally for Novice riders was that they had successfully completed a recognized event at novice. I got him to make a concession because I was sure that there would be a few riders that are more than capable of moving up to novice that for one reason or another have chosen not to, that would like an opportunity to ride with someone at the highest level, that doesn't come around often He is trusting me that if we can get anyone interested that is not "qualified" screened to determine if they fit. Right now, I'm leaning toward the 6th and 7th, because I just see no good in my riding in the biggest deal clinic of my entire life (sorry GM) on the 13th. Nothing good can come of it and it fits perfectly with my blacksmith's schedule. Let me know what you guys think. PM me if necessary.

6th-7th is good!
I'm currenly competing at Novice, and will have done 5 of them this year by the time Sept rolls around. I'd be comfortable doing a TL group, so long as it isn't T-about-to-go-P :p Actually, an Intro To Training session with JW would be fabulous! Doesn't look like AECs is in the cards this year (unless Champagne Run turns out *really* well) so the clinic would be the topper to my year :D
Wheee! thank you for setting this up!

The Area VIII Beginner Novice Championships are the last weekend in August, too. We are going to those, as well as the AEC's in the middle of September. I do hate missed opportunities. Maybe I can play jump crew?

Would the format of the clinic be an all gymnastic type of clinic? Or show jumping and cross country?
Auburn
Jul. 10, 2008, 08:22 AM
Fence2fence,
Good question. If it were all gymnastics, then we could probably play. In fact, it would be a very good prep for the AEC's.
2ndyrgal,
What do you think?
Jeannette, formerly ponygyrl
Jul. 10, 2008, 08:33 AM
Will this be a gymnastics and SJ clinic, or one day of jumps that fall down and one day that don't, to be ungrammatical about it?
Afraid I can't make it either way, mind you, but it's fun to see a clinic taking shape on line!
saje
Jul. 10, 2008, 08:42 AM
I'd love to do a little of both, mostly because I can never get me enough XC. And I'd love to tackle some Training questions under a Master's eye, I rarely get a chance to school XC at all, never mind in exhalted company! In reality though the gymnastic work would be very beneficial for both this rider and her horse, even though not quite as thrilling to ride
Any idea at what sort of cost we're looking at, very roughly?

Jul. 10, 2008, 08:45 AM
Well, I just found a relatively local unrecognized event on the 6/7th that I thougth about going to but the clinic sounds like a blast. Plus I already have tentative plans the next weekend AND it's the last local circuit hunter show in this area and the little girl who owns the horse I'd be bringing probably wants to do that instead. So that was my long winded explanation of saying as long as the horse owner is up for the expense, I could do the 6/7th in a Novice group. Please let us know the format and when you have things nailed down, how to enter, cost, etc.

Because of the surrounding weekends competitions, it's going to be two days of show jumping. That and I simply don't have time to get xc ready for true T or P questions. So 2 days of jumps that fall down (or hopefully not!!). As to price, I have to crunch some numbers, but I'm going to keep it as affordable as possible. In order to do that, I'm going to charge a nominal fee to audit (jump crew gets in free and gets a free hot lunch!)

Hi
Definitely would go if the dates worked out. I have a horse I would take training. I've done one schooling training HT with him and some CT's but really want some more x-country schooling before I do another training horse trial. Had my eye on Ky Classic but would wait for Mid-south in Oct. to get the chance to school with Jimmy Wofford first.

Findeight of course there will be lunch. It might be cold chicken in a bucket or bbq, that is the last thing on the list right now. I'm thinking we're going to be in the $250 for the clinic, $50 for a stall or a paddock w/run in. The limit of total riders for the clinic is 24 max, so there will be a small charge to audit and I'm still going to be in the hole. The more people that don't mind paying a small fee to audit, the nicer their lunch can be. There is a wonderful woman that caters Camargo's hunt breakfasts, maybe I can get her.

How had you advertised the clinic? I saw nothing in Area VIII or MSEDA or anywhere other than here. Although I admit that my MSEDA newsletter always gets to me a month late so maybe it was in the issue I just received for August. Maybe that's why you didn't get riders?
tle
Aug. 20, 2008, 12:15 PM
Unless things have drastically changes in the last few years, there are simply a few horse trials in this area that you do NOT put a clinic of that nature up against. Ky Classic is one of them... especially if you HAVE to have above Novice riders. Just the way things seem to work with the big events in this area. Learned that a long time ago when I was organizing clinics.

not to mess with the Omnibus.... JW has advised me to look at next years schedule and try for the BEGINNING of our season here, instead of the end. So I'm going to try to get it put together as soon after Rolex as possible whilst not doing anything as dumb as trying to hold it the same weekend as the last go in the area before AEC's. And perhaps Junior will be able to trot a 20 meter circle to the left by then... (don't ask).

Apologies if this has already been asked, how much is it? I'm asking b/c we're holding a Jimmy clinic in May in GA and we're working on pricing. I've never held a clinic with such a big name person and we're trying to work out all the costs. What's a typical fee for a clinic of this caliber. We're having him for two days.
GiGi
Aug. 22, 2008, 05:21 PM
Kim Severson at Poplar was $400; Phillip Dutton at the Ark is $400; JW in Thurmond NC is $350 AND he is taking BN there. Stabling is extra. It usually includes drinks during the day
water, gatorade, soda and lunch both days for the riders. Some clinicians will do dinner with the riders some want down time at dinner. Dinner is usually and extra charge or you pay for your own food if you go to a restaurant.

Best thing you can do when you price a clinic is estimate what it's going to cost you - including clinician's fee, expenses, facility rental if any, anything offered for participants and any miscellaneous like USEA registration or advertising adding in what you want for profit if any -- then work out how many participants you EXPECT to get. I think when we were doing clinics, we estimated 75% of max participants and didn't plan on any profit (goal was the break even while allowing us to ride). We did NOT include any auditor fees just because that can be so iffy if the weather goes bad, or that way you can offer free auditing to all or to those who help jump crew or whatnot. Stabling was always on top of that and again, we expected them to simply pay for themselves. Most of the time that worked out, but do expect to cover some $$ in case you don't fill.

Aug. 24, 2008, 09:14 PM
Thank you for the input! We're not trying to make a profit, we just want to break even, but I need to consider Jimmy's costs plus additional things like stabling, the facilities fee, food/drinks etc. Very helpful to hear from others!
