I'm going to be attending the Univerisity of Maryland (College Park) this fall and am having a hard time finding a suitable barn for my gelding. I would really, really appreciate any help. Thank you so much!

Why don't you PM Meredith Clark? She went to the Univ. of MD, not sure which location.

I also went to UMCP. I always boarded at Waredaca (in Laytonsville, about 40 minutes from campus), so I just kept them there through college. Spending 1 1/2 in the car every day going to the barn definately cuts into study time though. ;)

I would also recommend Perwinkle Farm. It's much closer to campus in Spencerville. I've never been there, but I know the BO and I'm imagining that it's quite nice.

Going the other direction, you go to Davidsonville where Dodon is (PM ErinPetersen for more info on that farm) and Nina Holm's barn.

What are you looking for in a barn? Stall/field board? Indoor? etc.

You can call The Equiery (www.equiery.com) and they can give you names/numbers of farms too.

Meredith goes to UMCP and, last I heard, boards her horses at Nina Holm's barn in Harwood. There are lots of barns up this way (towards Annapolis off Rte. 50) and there are some not too far from College Park (Reddemeade (http://www.reddemeade.com) is one that comes to mind right away) - though you won't find anything really close. There have been a couple of similar threads in the past - I've searched and found at least one that I'll post a link to below. If I find the others, I'll add them.

Ah-Ha! Found the other thread I was thinking of...

Depends on what you really want. I board at Nina's place (Glenwood Farm, Harwood MD) and i know she has a waiting list right now. But you can always call.. :)

Erin's right we just did a thread on this and named some places that would get a "red flag." good luck!! :)

Periwinkle is gorgeous but I don't think you can jump there...but you could hack to Reddemeade through the woods and jump in lessons over there...

Perwinkle's website mentions new jumps. I doubt they have XC, but they probably have enough SJs to keep you from getting bored.

My daughter just graduated from UMCP and her roommate keeps her horse near UMCP. If you pm me, I will give you her roommate's email. Are you an Animal Science major? The College of Agriculture has a lot of great programs.

Meredith has rented a farm along with a friend. I have heard it is quite nice.

Do NOT go to Reddemeade please!

Waredaca or Hans Gerling's farm are nice... but I believe the latter is kinda pricey.

Reddemeade has its pluses and minuses- the minuses are fairly apparent so if you might be interested then go check the place out and see what you think. They used to only take boarders that were already students so it may not be an option. I believe based on c expresso's prior posts, she has never actually been to Reddemeade and her opinion is based on the bad experience her former trainer had there, so you may want to take her opinion with a grain of salt since it is not first hand- not everyone shares that trainer's opnion.
The rest of the suggestions are worth checking out as well. Periwinkle used to be just a dressage place (no jumps on the property) and a bit of a dressage mentality (no turn out after recent rain, lots of individual turn out booted to the nines) but sounds like that might have changed so might be worth a call.

I go to UMCP (finishing in the fall!!!) I have my own place about 45mins from campus. I live in the house and we have 11 stalls with 4 full right now (2 of my horses and I board 2 of my friend's).

If you need a place to crash or want to know the low-down about local barns let me know, I work part time at Dover Saddlery so I know almsot everyone in the area.

Congrats on becoming at Terp... you'll love it :)

c_expresso: What do you gain by bashing another farm that I believe you've never stepped foot on (although please correct me if I'm wrong)?? EVERY farm has its positives and negatives, just as every trainer has their own positives and negatives. Yes, Reddemeade has it's highs and lows, but they take good care of the horses, and that should be all that matters.
