View Full Version : Woohoo! A ride for YB at Loch Moy!

I was just asked by the BFG's owner if I'd like to ride him at Loch Moy (#2)...a bit of a silly question! So, I have a training level ride there!

Now, the big question. What's the course like? And how different is it from the first (which I think the owner will be riding around).

They say that the courses will be different from one weekend to the next!! We shall see! I will be at the first one, riding prelim!

Generally, the course is rolling (with some hills, but nothing steep), and the jumps--for the most part-- are solid and well-placed; a number of them are in a "row", with different levels/heights side by side. (For example, some rolltops, oxers, "produce stands", etc.) There a couple simple combos at T, but nothing tricky; bending lines, fences set at related distances. Some of the jumps on the course are in the woods, mostly skinnies, logs, and some "faux corners", and the footing in there can be a little tricky, but I don't think the OT is unforgiving. I know that Carolyn said the courses would be different (both from last year's courses, and *and* from each other ;)) They have a bunch of new stuff: among them a new bank complex and a new water (with a rather steep bank up or down into it, depending on the direction from which you jump it.)

(I was there at the last Short Course Event, and got to do dressage and jump a stadium course in the new footed ring...it's HUGE!)

She said they "may or may not" use the ditch and brush again, though they will probably have the Trakehner on both courses. :p

I'll be a bit checker at the first one on Sunday, so maybe I can report back on what the course looks like (I will try to walk it when my duties are done, as long as it doesn't interfere with the volunteers' wine and cheese party afterward ;)); I doubt they will change it *radically* between 1 and 2. (I'll be doing T at #2 also, along with my student Erin--with the no-longer-ditchy Connemara mare; the last T for both our mares, God willing! :D)

I had drinks with the XC course designer the other night. she said to expect inviting, flowing courses with some new obstacles like dd described. should be great, I have always enjoyed their courses and it shows by how much money I spend and how many horses I bring there... by the end of july I am broke broke.

Cool, thanks for the input! :D

And

(I guess there are WAY worse things to be squandering your money on, come to think of it...;))

Thanks, ladies! We will be in attendance at both, with BFG's dad up at 1 along with our BN horse and rider duo, then me up on BFG at 2, along with the Dun One. I've never been, other than to the little party prior to the very first ever one, so I have no idea what to expect! He has been around training with me, but a couple of years ago, but he jumped around most of the training course at Seneca with his dad at the schooling day a few weeks ago.

He may have acted a fool at Rubicon last week with me, but he is usually an exceptional boy...despite his shenanigans!

Except I really don't want to bother her today if she's trying to get FIVE horses over to Surefire :D

(I'm on my way out the door myself anyway, but will check back here later today...)

I have been lessoning with Mogie and all she would say is the courses will be drastically different so if you were thinking about entering both it would be worthwhile. I am eager to see her courses..she sure comes up with good exercises for the lessons and has been kicking our butts into shape.

OMG. since we are also talking about schooling surefire... i just got back, early, of course... my baby spiderlegs horse decided he REALLY wanted to swim today. and took me with him. i done knocked mah hed and f-ed up mah arm. and baby boy got a big ol bloody shnoz. serves him right for layin down on me. and SO made me ride in the trailer on the way home because i also fell down loading horses and rolled in the shavings. can we say hot mess?

dang it. I will be back there tomorrow to school the rest of the chillins. I think I will be drinking hard liquor tonight instead of regular mic ultras.

Ahhh! He was jumping so great too. a lot of the prelim stuff. I put together a little course by the water and was going to end on that... I said I will just canter him through the water one more time and jump the little blue table out, that will be an easy start to this course (which included the coffin, banks and corner) and SPLOOSH... down he goes... I dont know if he tripped or what. he is all bloody on his white face so I start crying like a whiney baby.. we go to load the horses back on the trailer and I trip on the step up. faceplant in shavings. I am pretty!!!!!

we took the boss's rig and (very expensive) truck so no.. trailer trash not allowed on leather upholstery.

Ouch! That's just not fun. Also means it must be bloody nose day for COTH horses. Dunny was uncooperative while getting scoped this am and Dr. J poked him with the scope. He bled, all over both of us, a lot.

That is very cool that Mogie is designing. It'll be nice to have some fresh ideas to the area. It'll be interesting to see what she does.

Andi, we can always use some extra hands. I'm assuming you'll be fairly mobile and not terribly fragile by that point, correct?

Not a big deal. It doesn't take much to nick them, and he was being horrid at first, so we weren't surprised. And there are some many little blood vessels in their faces, they bleed like crazy over the tiniest of things. I've seen a lot more blood come out of their noses and the horse stayed upright!

LexInVA
Jul. 1, 2008, 02:41 PM
I was speaking generally about today's events not specifically about the blood but now that you mention it, seeing a gusher from a horse doesn't really sound that pleasant either. Given how large and deep their nasal cavity is, I guess it's not really a shocking fact that they can bleed that easily.

YR, I think it is a weird mojo type day...you going swimming, Dunny getting a nose bleed (funny how he didn't seem to get that if he tilted his head back and pinched his nose it would stop....), then, once we got back to the barn and settled, we realized that our little sunshiny BN mare was having some funny colic. She was doing MUCH better when I left a few minutes ago (and was very cranky about the scant amount of food I'd been giving her), but I HATE it when my kids feel crappy, and she was definitely feeling icky. I go back out at 10 to check and give more banamine. Weird day.

Well no, alcohol is most definitely not required by any means for YOU in particular to take advantage of me but to..umm...make it more likely that you'd consider attempting it I guess it would help. ;) Unless you're just bold and straightforward to begin with.

Bold and straightforward? Not right off the bat, but alcohol isn't required to get me to that point (alcohol just makes me talk my head off...the women in my family are all very happy drunks ).

A not so happy woman right now is the mare. She's definitely feeling good, as she has torn her stall to shreds stall walking because she's not out with the other girls AND she's starving. She was very grateful for the whopping half a flake of hay she got while I visited with her (meaning, beat her back from the door so she wouldn't just plow me down in attempt to escape. She's lucky she's very good at her job...little cow).

And, new milestone for me! I gave an IV shot, did it text book as I've been taught (which I've been doing for awhile now), however, I did NOT get weak in the knees and nearly faint! This is a big step for me! Still took me about 2 minutes to build up the courage to stick the needle in (not easy on a wiggly, cranky, starving, chestnut mare), but I felt no need to sit down afterward. Woohoo!!!

Hoping tomorrow is far less weird mojo for the yellow girls. Looking forward to a nice ride on the BFG. I am hoping to smoke the dressage. ;)

Ah. Good to know you're a happy drunk and not a sad one. :)
I can't even begin to formulate the thoughts required to give a shot to a horse. I've heard bad things about shots gone bad, particularly those that deal with the IV spots.
