Okay, so we've eliminated some and I've added a few of our favorites from the list of suggestions. I put the name of the person who made the suggestion first next to the suggested name, so we can see who wins should one of those names be chosen :D. This has been a really fun thread to follow.

So, here we go again <smile>. Pick your favorite from this group and hopefully, we'll have a name and a winner!

The poll isn't up yet, but I noticed you live in Wynnewood (not sure if anyone mentioned this in the other thread)?

Many famous horses (Albany comes to mind) have been named after where they came from.

Well...that name was on the previous thread <lol>...It was the least popular of the names we had chosen. So, it was eliminated...

Many famous horses (Albany comes to mind) have been named after where they came from.

But, one of your choices is up on the list, SM :D
The town we live in is pronounced "whinneywood"...maybe that was the deterrent <lol>.

So, that one is off the list.

OKay...just to prevent a conspiracy...here's what I'll do. If Wyatt Earp is the popular choice, I'll go ahead and give whoever has the runner up name the free breeding. Does that work, Chris? <smile>...Just shooting for the name that will be memorable and likable and all that stuff!

I was looking for this thread earlier to see if you'd made a decision. I have one more to add to the mix... "Walks On Water" (i.e., Dances With Wolves) or "Walk On Water"

It takes me forever to name my babies!! We had four this year and we're still working on names for two of them.

Of the names you have posted, I like Wyatt the best... I have a grandson named Wyatt Winford Smith .. so, of course, I like the name. :-)

Naming a stallion is different than naming a gelding, or even a mare for that matter. There is a marketing component to consider.

For this guy, I like the word Walk incorporated somehow.

Walk the Talk
Walking Tall

Walk The Line has name recognition because of the song.

Who is the dam again?

Ok Kathy, I won't start a conspiracy against Wyatt Earp. But....if you don't like Walk the Plank how about Wardaner? Or, I also like Oakstable's Walking Tall, But I voted for Windtalker, which seems very romantic to me.

You can also play off the word Top. I believe the sire's barn name was Topper.

Top Hat

Or just name the son Topper.

(The longer I have done this, the harder naming becomes.)

ShowjumpersUSA
Jun. 7, 2008, 12:06 PM
Oakstable..... I thought a colt might have to be named with the first letter of his sire's name as we do in Holsteiner breeding.....not so?

Anyway, it is true a stallion should have a very good name. Here's another suggestion... White Tie (simply because a white tie event is more special than a black tie event)

What is Walk on Top's breeding? I know there is more than one stallion with that name.

Equibrit

None of them are special or individual enough! They all have recent associations to something other than a desirable stallion.

Oakstable
Jun. 7, 2008, 01:24 PM
Walk on Top was born in Germany, sire was Walldorf. He presents the lines of Watzmann and Woermann

He finished 3rd in the US stallion testing, with 129.22 points. If I recall correctly, he had an age penalty so he would have been second.

The Hanoverian naming convention is to use the first letter of the sire.

This young stallion might be registered Oldenburg NA.

Damsire was Frohwind? He won the stallion testing the year he went through.

I like Wow because it reminds me of the Jane Smiley book in which the racehorse, per his animal communicator, wanted his name changed to "Wowie," because he needed a strong name in order to win his races. According to the horse, other horses made fun of his real name, and he felt self-conscious about it.

I also liked Walk on Wind because it is a nod to both of the horse's parents, and like the image it evokes -- of a horse that is so light on his feet that he floats across the ground. But that one didn't make the poll ; )

My vote is for Walk the Line - just like it! Voted for Wyatt Earp the first time and that would be my next choice.

Wow! is cute but also the name of a filly that is doing pretty well in the hunter breeding right now (by Popeye K). Not that it matters but I hate naming mine something someone else already has. Hard to do sometimes though.

I still like Wrocketman from the earlier thread. Windtalker is nice, and that's what I voted for.

Since, as has been pointed out, the biggest issue with a stallion name is marketing, I suggest you try mocking up an ad with some of the names you're considering.

Another thing is, IMHO, more important than the allusion to the sire, is that the name be memorable and that it be distinct to this stallion. 'Walk the Line', though lovely, is almost certainly already taken and likely to be taken again... and again.

Sometimes less sensical phrases are better. From another post, I thought Walk Incorporated was a suggestion at first, and I kind of liked it. :D

Another thing is, IMHO, more important than the allusion to the sire, is that the name be memorable and that it be distinct to this stallion. 'Walk the Line', though lovely, is almost certainly already taken and likely to be taken again... and again.

I've found, through the years, it's unusual to have a name that hasn't be used, regardless. So, I don't let that influence my choices unless there is another stallion of the same "breed" (any warmblood in this instance) with the same name. It creates some real confusion when people ask "which (Insert name)". While there are other Walk the Line's, I haven't found any warmblood stallions by that name.

I've also found that what "I" may consider a phenomenal name, someone else may scratch their head over and think "YUCK". That's probably part of the issue why this guy is 4 years old and still doesn't have a "name" <lol>. The names that Jos likes, I'm not overly fond of and the one's "I" like, Jos doesn't particularly like. I will say that it's not all about the name, either. If the horse is memorable, the name isn't going to have a lasting impression, either. However, when we see a truly spectacular horse, the name, regardless of how good or bad, stands a much better chance of being remembered. I was in the advertising business for many, many moons, so have a pretty good grasp of what does and doesn't work. Sometimes the most memorable names are the ones that tend to be a bit...well...just plain weird. While names like Widowmaker tend to have an impact, the connotation can be negative, so those are out. I find that there are a lot of names that incorporate "wind" in them and sometimes...well...depending on where it is in the name, I just think flatulence - but then, I "do" spend a huge amount of time at the back end of mares ;) - so there aren't a lot of names that have wind in them that I personally don't like.

I have been amazed at the number of suggestions and the imagination that has gone into them! It truly has been one of the more fun threads I've been privy to <smile>. I tend to, this time of year, just not have the time to look at threads that don't involve equine reproduction. So, this has been a really, really pleasant change of pace for me. I truly am curious to see which name gets the final nod. So far, the two that I "have" liked the best seem to be at the top of the list. I'm hoping that this guy will be fun for fellow COTH'ers to follow his progress through the approval process. He is currently going under saddle and so far has been an easy ride. But, being in the middle of Quarter Horse country, it's tough finding an arena to be able to take him to to learn to free jump. Hopefully, we'll find a place within a reasonable drive in the next few weeks.

I can't vote in this one. I still like Wyatt Earp because my own boy is named Doc Holliday but I am a big Johnny Cash fan, so I also like Walk the Line a lot.

And Jos - even though I love CSI and liked The Who quite a bit, "Who Are You?" for a horse just doesn't cut it.

I think "W - The President" has a nice ring to it. But a lot of folks can't stand Bush, so that is probably not a good option. Inspectors and judges might let their political bias sway their opinion of the horse.

<smile>...yeah, you scored LOTS of points, Gretchen <lol>.

And Tracy and amdfarm, DON'T encourage him <lol>. Remember if the name you pick is a flop, I "will" blame you for it <grin>.

Chris, Wyatt Earp is still "my" personal fav, but Jos hates it and while it's up there close to the top of the list in the poll, it probably isn't going to win. And not to worry lcw579, "W" or "Dubya" absolutely will NOT be one of the choices. I was always taught to NOT discuss politics in polite company and it's one of those things that produces a visceral response from people either for or against - there's just no in between on that one.

The boy will go to his Belgian Warmblood Inspection this summer if all goes well. There isn't an ISR/Oldenburg N.A stallion inspection close to us this year, so we'll probably have to wait on that one until next year.

In any event, I know Jos liked Walk the Line - at least better than Wyatt Earp <smile>. So, hopefully a compromise will be made and it's a name we can both agree on... I'll keep you posted on what the final name will be!
