View Full Version : Need a name... 2007 Holsteiner filly (sorry!)
Rio Blanco
Jun. 5, 2008, 10:46 PM
Dam ("Prima Del Rio") is a Holsteiner mare by LeSanto and sire is a Holsteiner by Challenger. I want to register her with AHHA, but her name has to start with a "Z"! :(
Her barn name is Tara... and my friend from Denmark heard me call her Tear-Bear and thought I was calling her Carebear, so that's become her second barn name. Well now that I think about it, she has lots of barn names.... like Donkey, which she got from her big ears and the days of "teach Tara how to lead" where she made you practically drag her with the rope around her butt and then randomly take off :sigh: But now she's so laid back and explorative... we were loading her and another mare/foal and saved her for last, figuring she'd be the hard one to load - and she just pushed past mom/foal and hopped into the trailer, ready to go.
Anyways, I need a Z name for her...... any ideas?

Had a friend (now married to my cousin) named Zipporah, a biblical name (Moses' wife), we all called her Zippy, always thought it would make a good name for a horse.

How about Zara something?
I have a Zara :) In her case, it's a shortened version of Jahzara. (She needed a J name. Jahzara = 'blessed princess' in Swahili.)
Look at foreign languages. English is not very helpful for Z names, but there are quite a lot, I think, in Arabic and African languages.
Zahara is the one that comes to my mind.

Since her mother's name has "river" in it, perhaps there's a river name that begins with a Z ?
Already suggested : Zara. I think it means sunrise ? but it's also the name of a well known department store in Europe.....and Queen Elizabeth's grand daughter.....people may ask which one is the filly named for. :)

ohh the Z names.. I myself had a 2007 Holsteiner filly, and I settled on Zenya (it has meaning for me, A month and a half before her birth my best friend was killed in Kenya and I wanted to incorporate her memory somehow).. Z is a tough one to pick, and so many are already taken...Including (I believe) Zsa Zsa Gabor, I think I saw that on the list of approved fillies for 2007 in the AHHA roster however I might be wrong, maybe it was only Zsa Zsa.
There are some really good suggestions, give the AHHA a call or email with your list of possible names to see what is already taken, might help narrow it down... And beyond what everyone else has said it's hard to come up with another! The only others I can think of are Zehara (or Zahara) or if if you find her a lot like her mom, maybe Zel Rio? or Zetara (for the barn name to be included).
Good luck!

I have a Z mare (1985). Her name is Zeanna.
As an offshoot of the Zara name, a relative of mine is named Zaria.
